What an excellent Trio! No wonder why in his days Volkmann was mentioned in the same breath as Beethoven, Mendelssohn. Liszt, Joachim and Cossmann performed his splendid 2nd Trio. Can't wait to see that one uploaded!
Had he stayed in Vienna, perhaps he would have gained more recognition for the talent he obviously had. So much depends on being in the right place at the right time. Even then. Thank you for introducing this nice performance of a composer I have not been familiar with.
Interesting how they perform the first 6/4 theme - we have the feeling that the first beat is actually an anacrusis for the second one, thus dislocating the downbeat one quarter-note. Of course this has also to do with the fact that the rhythm here is short-long, putting a natural accent on the usually unaccented second beat, but they really chose to play it that way (I can't hear the first chords as downbeats even if I try.) I'm now curious if other groups do the same, and if even I will be able to play it myself with a clear accent on the "real" first beat, and how it sounds when played like that. Thank you for the wonderful video!
Interesting. I counted out loud each quarter and that helped me feel it. But I understand. There are pieces to this day that I still can't feel the down beat correctly because of hemiolias and syncopations.

The first movement reminded me of An die ferne geliebte

thanks for this upload with the score - this is my favourite piece by Volkmann
Such a well-formed trio(sonata)! One of my favourites of this less-known-but-excellent composer. Thank you again, master B.!
