I 100% agree with you. This guitar, while expensive for a Studio, is absolutely the best Studio in decades. It will be VERY interesting to see what they sell for in the Gibson Demo Shop when they start appearing there. Getting one of these for about $1499 or less would give you the spending room to get a hardshell case, if you wanted one, without reaching the $1999 MSRP.
I've got a LP Modern that I will be putting this one next to in a future video. It will be interesting to see how similar they are under the back plates.
Thanks and it's good to be back! Had a busy holiday season and kind of lost track of time because I actively volunteer in our community. But I've got new ideas and videos in the works and this guitar is the start of some of it. Looking forward to doing a deep dive into the wiring and setup of the Modern Studio and how it compares, sonically, to the other Gibson models with similar pickups and setup.
some of the smokehouse bursts have an obvious -split- seam in the wood of the body, looks like you got one of the better ones. I think it's a beautiful colour. (edited thanks to OP of video!)
I've always loved the Smokehouse Burst color on the LP. This one hides the front seam (if there is one!) incredibly well. The satin finish seems to lend itself to helping with the hiding effort. The glossy Smokehouse Burst models make it a lot easier to tell where the seam is. On the back, this one might be a 3 piece back. I can, barely, make out one seam line and there's another one that may or may not be a seam on the treble side. But, again, it's hard to tell because the back is black and satin, which hides the seams so well.
@@guitarsandgears3948 hear ya, though I've seen some of the glossy ones that look incredible with no obvious middle seam below the bridge :) And I don't worry about seams on the back, it''ll be resting against my tum-tum ;) Also, thanks for correcting the term I used, for some reason "seam" wasn't coming to mind even though that's *exactly* what I meant :)
I had that same serial number in my cart at Sweet Water. haha Congrats! I love it. Did they give you discount? I didn't ask my salesmen.. I just put it in my cart to see how long it took to sell. The first batch of these sold pretty quick.
Yes, I did get a discount. This one is special to me because of the day of the year the neck was stamped. So I'm very happy to have it. I think they won't be sitting around for long. They are cool guitars.
I have a 2018 Gibson Les Paul Studio Smokehouse Burst Limited Edition, it has a high gloss finish and binding on the neck with fret-end binding also, ive never seen that on a Studio before, my guitar was made like this only in 2018, I think they are great guitars. Since your guitar is a Modern Studio its a little more fancy than mine..
I think yours might be the fancier version. I've heard about a few Studio special editions that had binding and other appointment upgrades. I like the high gloss finishes better than I do satin finishes, but this satin isn't terrible. I'll show it more in depth in the Modern vs. Modern Studio video I'm making.
@@guitarsandgears3948 I think you might be right about that, maybe mine is the more fancier version, I bought it in 2018 brand new and to tell you the truth i have only played it a couple of times more or less, I will make a full review video about this guitar since there is no video out there what I know of. Since my guitar have different specs than todays Studio Smokehouse Burst does. I'll take this guitar apart and show the world what everything looks like.
Thinking calmly, this is a cool guitar. Tribute, Studio, and Classic were abolished and averaged and raised the price. I might want this in 10 years, like I'm currently interested in Les Paul Eutura and Tribute 70s.
The new Modern Lite is, sort of, like the old Tribute. A little more expensive, but not outlandishly priced. Especially when you consider that some of the Epiphone models that are now called "Inspired by Gibson Custom" are coming in at $1299-1499. But I still think that any guitar that stickers for $1999 should come with a hardshell case.
Having had a couple different Studios over the years, I don't really think that this one is exceptionally more resonant than, say, a 2016 Studio T. The neck feels better than the Studios I've owned, but that's got a lot to do with compound radius fretboard and slim taper neck carve. But the resonance is on par with what I expect from a modern weight relief Les Paul.
More like the Custom. A lot of the Modern Studio is like the Custom, actually. From the pickups to the neck, this guitar really is a cheap version of a Custom. Not to say that it's got as good a quality control as the Custom Shop, but the parts are similar.
I guess they didn't pack one for this guitar. The case candy had the truss rod tool, the polishing cloth, usual Gibson paperwork and the strap. No extra truss rod cover. Wonder if that's something that's missing or if only a few guitars got it. Might have to call up Gibson and see what they say.
its just like a early to mid 90s studio with a heel access cut, with a inflated price, the early 90s also had ebony board, and i think were nicer than these new ones
Then yours is one of the regular Studios that were made before the start of the Modern Studio. Those are also great guitars with similar pickups. The Modern Studio has a few upgrades, such as different switching, ebony fretboard and different hardware.
I keep thinking that I am going to do more Oldsmobile content with the '98s and 442, but, because of other commitments, that keeps getting pushed to the back burner.
I'm not saying that your guitar is worth $2000, but I AM saying that I will sell you a $50 softshell case (modern day version of a gig bag) that will make your 1992 Studio look like it's one of these Modern Studios. lol
Yeah, same here. I am kind of an ebony fretboard snob, so I love the fact that you can get a Studio with an ebony fretboard again. But I'm on the hunt for a good deal on a Gibson hardshell case to put it in. Found an '80s era chainsaw case that I almost bought for it because of the brown lining inside it going with the Smokehouse Burst color.
This costs 3k in Canada. For that you get a satin finish and gig bag. No locking tuners, ss frets, things that would be considered modern by today's standards. These are a terrible value.
I 100% agree. You can get them for about the same price as the previous generation Studio sticker price, and they are a good deal when you do. But I don't see a whole lot of them being sold at MSRP.
The Modern and Studio existed as two different models for the last few years. This model is an evolution of the Studio that combines elements of the Modern and Studio. There's an ebony fretboard and modern switching but the appearance is very much Studio or Tribute. You can buff the satin finish up to make it more "glossy," if you like that look. Trogly did a video about that on his channel.
Seriously what’s „modern” about it? No locking tuners, no ss jumbo frets and they charge almost 2 grand? Not to mention the finish job is cheaper than in regular studio. Wtf Gibson?
For what it is, I 100% agree that it is overpriced. And they are making enough of them that you should NEVER pay full price for one. I was especially drawn to this one because it was built on my birthday. And I like the ebony fretboard and black binding. But I also acknowledge that I did not pay full price for this one, even at launch. So, if anyone is going to get one, they are willing to deal on them. Mine was the same price as the older Studio, so don't go paying over $1500 for one of these.
I think its because of the weight relief right? I'm eyeing the 2018 models because they have the fretboard binding but that's not at all what you're talking about lol
I think the reason they label it a "modern" is because of the comfort cut at the heel joint and the switching for the pickups. Other than those, the only other thing that's even remotely similar to the 2019-2023 Modern is the fact that there's binding on the neck. And there have been studio models with binding in the past, so even that is a stretch.
Great showcase! Just tried one and it may be the best Studio offerings since the 90s.

They are nice guitars but for $2000 they should come with gloss nitro!
Or at least a hardshell case.
I completely agree, the faded finish on the earlier Tribute looked moldy and too cheap to me. Must be buffed like Trogly did.
I just bought a Les Paul Modern in excellent condition for $2000 . It is still expensive guitar though.
The non gloss is one of the cool parts about it. I have a modern too and this not being gloss is cool.
I've got a LP Modern that I will be putting this one next to in a future video. It will be interesting to see how similar they are under the back plates.
She’s a beauty, congratulations!
I got it from guitar center. Thanks for video subscribed to your channel!
bought one yesterday 10/10
I have a 2023 Studio in Smokehouse... I absolutely love it!
I love the old Studios. I still have my 2022 because it's just too good to let go of.
SON , Good to have you back ! I passed on a studio back in early 2000 , kick myself every time I think about it.

I own the wine red one it looks great just needed fretboard oil
Satin finishes are kinda ehhhh. They can look great on certain models, but for 2k give me a protected finish. Sounds great and is pretty though.
Hi, is the back brown red or black ? It’s difficult to see in the video. Thanks

Do you hear a difference in the guitar's resonance with a gloss finish lp studio?
Also ebony fingerboard is also my choice.

More like the Custom. A lot of the Modern Studio is like the Custom, actually. From the pickups to the neck, this guitar really is a cheap version of a Custom. Not to say that it's got as good a quality control as the Custom Shop, but the parts are similar.
Nope . Bring the Classic back .
Hey. Look in your black access bag you should have a blank truss rod cover in there.
It should come with a hard case for that price
I 100% agree. I have remedied the problem by finding a deal on a modern Gibson hardshell case, but it should have come with that from the beginning.
Gorgeous ❤
