I agree with you. I think one of the greatest strengths of this Retro Gaming community is its diversity. It's awesome that something as trivial as games can bring so many different people together. Showing that even though we may be different in sex, religion, and or culture among other things. We can find this common thread of interest that brings us closer to one another. Showcasing that maybe we arent that different at all. Allowing us to grow closer together for the betterment of ourselves and the community. We need more t hings in this world that bring people together than push them apart.

Realistic Fishing. If a person likes a particular game or platform, no matter how niche, that’s what it is all about. Should a modern music collector slam someone who loves and collects old victrolas (antique record players)? We all have our favorite things for reasons that are personal to us, the diversity within the retro-gaming community is what makes it interesting.

Do people really say that? I don't give a shit what people say personally. I have an OUYA and a Bittboy for my retro gaming needs. I may pick up a few more things but I really don't have the space to pick up everything.

The biggest issue I have is when I run into people that love hating or blaming gaming for the worlds problems, or just think that spending my life playing games is wasteful or immature. Seems to still be a large number of people in my age group here that believe that tho the younger folks seem to be having a better time than I did growing up. As you say, coping with it is certainly a challenge and I hope one day we can all stop judging so quickly and rather take the time to explore different points of view.

What I enjoy the most is really the conection with other gamers and collectors, sharing information and pasion. Since I started my channel I met great people within yhe community. The only thing I really dont like is the mentality of going into retro for the wrong reasons. The mentality of looking at it as just a business and "showing of ".

From what I’ve seen, there are so many positives in the community. The only real negatives I’ve seen are people that get jealous over what others have, or deals they weren’t able to get for certain games.

I agree Reggie, I am a collector and reseller and the positives have impacted me and my family. Only negatives i ran into have been a small number of collectors who demonize all others. All collectors buy, sell and/or trade games... its part of the lifestyle. John, to me, the retro gaming community is an outlet where I can immerse myself in something that is fun, social, and that has a sense of history. I view game consoles, gaming media, and the pop culture that goes with them as part of history. Much like people collect stamps and coins, and study the history that goes with these artifacts, there is a lot of great history that surrounds games. The stories that are part of the gaming industry are full of hero’s, villains, drama and triumph. I appreciate those in the community that share this perspective. The educators (a recently retired educator myself) and historians that love games, but see past the games themselves.
Short of a few UA-camrs, I haven’t really seen the dark side of the community yet. Mostly I’ve run into folks like yourself who love to share their passion for the hobby. I really appreciate the work you all do to make this a great community. Many thanks.

Always love your positivity John. Retro Gaming got me into Hardware and Electronics. In order to curate my old hardware, or modify it to work with modern HD Televisions, I've learned loads of new skills. From soldering to writing ROM Chips, I've picked up loads of basic electronics skills. My only regret is that I live in a very remote area, so I don't get the chance to go to many meetups. This year I hope to change that and make the effort to go to more events. Who knows, I might even be able to help others in the community, because if I can learn how to do it, any one can.

Great point John about the Retro Gaming community being DIVERSE (keyword there and an important one), which is one of the many things I love about it. All walks of life, shapes and sizes, young and old, purple and green. As a “CD-i guy” I’m not a typical or “mainstream” retro gamer, but there’s a community within the community who shares the same passion, love and interest that I do for my beloved console and and it’s physical media.
Which is why I compare the Retro Gaming community to something like the NFL, playing the same sport, same game in the same league, but each team has a different mascot and colors and are from different cities, but they all share the same passion for playing the same game.
Other than it’s the vast wealth of history and so many different eras of gaming that are able to be explored and enjoyed, and we all have our favorites to play and talk about, buy sell trade, and pass on the knowledge which is what makes it interesting!

I always try to maintain being positive and happy. I enjoy collecting and have amassed a large collection over the years. I treat it as a hobby and something that I really enjoy. I avoid drama like you do. I'm here; apart of the retro gaming community to have fun and share my love and passion for video games with others who feel the same way. I feel too many people can get themselves caught up worrying about what others are doing, how they collect, what they play and do with their you tube channels. I never question why people collect what they do or play the games they do. I respect everyone's right to play the games they love and enjoy and collect the way that they like to. I would never make someone feel bad about the way they game, collect, run their channels or life. This life is way too short to focus on the negative aspects of life. I would rather spend my time being happy and enjoying life. Take care my friend and keep up the good work.

I'll always remember maybe a year and a half ago or so, I was in a retro gaming group on Facebook, and I was trying to be educated on Atari games because I was not familiar with them, and I got SO much hate and negative messages on my post for not knowing about them already. I was trying to buy a lot of games for my sister, and wanted to make sure that I knew what to look for. It was very disheartening. I then sent you a message to your Facebook page, and you replied to me and were so kind and respectful and I learned something from you, which I appreciate! In the end, I was too late at the lot of Atari games, but the fact that you took time out of your busy schedule to respond to my message really meant a lot to me and made me realize that not everyone in the community is negative, so thank you! I just left that specific group because it was just toxic. Thanks again!

I've only recently been collecting but am enjoying it and that's what is most important. What I find fascinating about retro gaming is the sheer diversity of not only people but collections as well. Someone might collect all they can for one system, or from a particular developer, or a certain genre. That's what keeps the hobby so interesting. As in all things in life it is important to respect other's opinions even if you don't agree with them.

I enjoy it when people actually talk about games and when you can have a discussion or share your opinions. After all, there really aren't people in my everyday life that care about old games. It's just more fun when you can enjoy your excitement with others or maybe let off some steam when you've played an infuriating game. Also, in some communities or subreddits there are contests or (monthly) challenges that have encouraged me to spend (more) time with a game that I would otherwise not have played or at least not to that extent.
Then there is also sharing of knowledge about games and hardware or even help with technical issues. I would not have been able to mod or repair a console if it were not for the retro gaming community.
As for the downside it is just like you mentioned: some people are very admant and blunt in their opinions and force them upon you. This can be very annoying or unpleasant. Then there is also the reselling aspect. Collectors buy games en masse and then drive up the prices. It has become pretty much impossible to find a good deal, because collectors are lunging at absolutely everything like vultures even though they do not need it anymore and then eventually sell parts of their haul for high prices. This makes it really difficult for new collectors or collectors on a budget to get into the hobby or a specific system.

Excellent topic! Retro gaming is probably the least toxic community out there. It's here that people from all walks of life can rally around gaming without the fighting and bickering and nastiness. There's little hate in this community. You'll always find people that want to pull others into their drama because they can't solve their own problems, or they're too proud to ask for help, or as John pointed out it could be their nature to be negative, but in the retro gaming community, that negativity is super limited. This is the place where we can all come together regardless of petty issues like race, religion, or politics. The world would be a better place if more people were playing video games and collecting. Great video!

When I look at any gaming community, the first thing that comes to mind is straight up fun. Regardless of where our collections are or what anyone does for a living, at the end of the day, we all participate in the community because we want to. Now two or more people with the same passion in anything may butt heads when they both have different ways of approaching the same answer. But its also passion that drives the hobby and the industry forward. Like any other community passion when combined with dedication takes small ideas and turns them into reality. For example, I have a great friend that I've known since high school and he spends his spare time video modding consoles and searching for ways to get the best output possible from his machines. Him and I swap info about various things. Sometimes, we butt heads on certain topics but I never hold a grudge against him because at the end of the day, right or wrong, fact or opinion, if you listen to anyone's counterpoint, you may realize that both parties mean well and just have different views on the same hobby they are so passionate about.
Onto one gripe of mine, while this doesn't happen too often (let me stress that fact), occasionally I run into people who are just plain sexist and can't except the fact that their are women who game. My sister and I gamed a lot back in the day and the one thing I love about gaming is the fact that code does not discriminate against anyone. The gaming arena is an open arena where age, sex, race and sexual orientation mean nothing. Its just you, your opponents, your brains and your reflexes. I'm the type of person that would rather get ticked off at myself for not practicing enough versus blaming someone else for my lack of skill. Win or loose, my opponents always get my respect in the end as long as they were respectful themselves. I can't respect someone who blames the opposite sex for their lack of skill. That mindset always baffled me and no matter how many times someone tries to justify their in the box hatred towards someone, it will never make sense to me no matter hard they try. To those of you who may be reading this thinking I'm some kind of SJW, it really has nothing to do with that. My view on gaming is the more, the merrier. I've been gaming since 1983 and to see the hobby grow and gain acceptance is a great thing that truly says we have come a long way. We need to keep things that way because at the end of the day, its all about fun. If you are not having fun doing what your doing, you have to ask yourself why you are doing it to begin with.
To end this on a positive note, nothing makes me happier than finding and playing games that have a collector's story behind it. As we know, retro gaming is all about nostalgia. That nostalgia may stem from game play but it also has the capability to bring us back to simpler times. Weather its beating up baddies in Streets of Rage 2 with your best friend, coming home to find a surprise present from your parents or playing a specific game and winning a championship, games have the capability to be a bookmark to the past. Is there anyone out there who has ever repurchased an old trade in that you traded in 13 years before finding it again (and knowing its yours because you opened the box and found a piece of paper with your old save game password written in your handwriting)? It happened to me once and that was a crazy experience. While that is pretty personal and extreme, my point is that things like that will leave a lasting impression on a collector. I love talking to others and hearing stories like these be it a holy grail find, a personal favorite or something they use to rent when they were younger. Looking at the bigger picture, think about this: Gaming is a hobby that is ruled by what is cutting edge but is more respected for the legacy it has left behind. There is something really powerful about that. And while the new will always become old, at the end of the day, if you never played it, its new to you. And that is what makes gaming so exciting.

I've felt disappointed and leery of the retro game community because my exposure to it has been largely online as opposed to in-person. I used to frequent a particular forum, which wasn't bad and the community there was pretty cool. However, an incident broke out over a political topic someone shared which correlated to the LGBT groups the site supports, and a heated discussion broke out. I didn't like how I was belittled for not supporting everyone else's views, and I decided it was no longer the place for me. It still bothers me, even though it's only been a month since I left because it was a place for me to talk about my favorite game series.
I also used to frequent various subreddits, which I've also cut out of my life. I was tired to seeing people telling others not to buy repro carts because "it's piracy", despite the topic being more nuanced than that. I was tired of seeing "unpopular opinion" posts, as if the user needed validation for their opinion as opposed to sticking to their guns. I was tired of looking at the seemingly purposeless collections, used only to heighten one's status. I was done with it, so I left.
However, I do enjoy the research that's been done on console modifications and homebrew. I enjoy modifying Game Boys once in a while thanks to the work done by community members. I like the research that's been documented on sites like SNESCentral, SMWCentral, or tcrf.net. I really appreciate having this information available so I can learn more about what I like.
I don't need nor want that trash in my life. I want to share my interests with others, but I don't want to sift through petty nonsense like that to do so. So I hang here where it's cool, or I engage in other hobbies. I think the retro gaming community is cool, but only having online exposure as opposed to finding someone to share that hobby with can taint a bigger picture.

How do you feel about modern games that always have many updates after release, and online modes that are dependent on servers being active which may not be available anymore in the years to come. It makes retro game collection seem like the only real option to have a game in it's entirety that will be the same in 50 years as it was the day it came out. Thinking about the collecting of the current generation of games just feels like it's a lost cause because of how it may lose features in the future because of how everything is so connected to the internet nowadays. I am 31 years old and love going back to play games that were made before I was born or was too young to play when they were released. A lot of good retro games out there.

The business model has changed, but yeah, it's kinda a problem. I'm losing interest in gaming. Another problem is companies like Nintendo blocking rom sites out of greed. Like emulation is literally part of the reason retro gaming is so popular. I'm more inclined to play single player games. There are some online games that have longevity, fortunately.
