    I wish other Spanish speakers were most respectful towards the Puerto Rican way of speaking. Our speech has its own variations thanks to the Spanish, African, and Taino influences, as it happens with the speech from other countries. I don't mock or exaggerate anyone's accent, I appreciate and celebrate the differences between different countries. Why can't you?

      Our accent is from the Andalucian or Andalucia heritage, like the Cuban accent we short the words and our accent is strong. Carribean spanish is shortened words very much like of Andalucian form of speak Spanish.

      Puerto Rican Spanish also has a lot of influence from Canary Islands Spanish as well as Andalusian Spanish.

      @@n1kk3l9 no, there's jokes but there's legit plenty of people that truly look down on Puerto Ricans and other Latinos for the way they speak.

    Puerto Rico, being a U.S. territory, is one of the influential and vibrant cultures in all of Latin America. Our food, our music, our accent, our handsome people, our contributions to society. Even though the island is going through a vigorous financial recession you will always see people smiling, laughing, partying, and maintaining positivity as much as possible. ¡Orgulloso de ser puertorriqueño y maunabeño WEPA! 🇵🇷🌴🍹

    Suggestion: You should make a video about the "linguistic history" of Puerto Rico. How we still have "taino" words, african words, how spanish has survived even though we have been a US Colony for more than 100 years and how are english words incorporated.

    • @MorganMacMannus
      @MorganMacMannus 8 років тому +5

      +Leticia Cortes, there's Taíno some words even in English. Hammock, hurricane, tobacco, and a few othes. There's also some other words of Carib origin, like yucca. :)

  • @josesolismusic
    @josesolismusic 8 років тому +54

    OK, since no one has mentioned it, and you didn't either in the video, I will. The reason the Nationalists decided to fire into the air in congress (they didn't mean to hurt anyone, just call attention to the world), was because for YEARS the USA were killing people in different parts of the island. Not one or two, they were massacres. This is conveniently ignored in the history books. The causes for the action is never mentioned, so I might understand if you didn't know this, many people in Puerto Rico don't know.

      @myoamel4618 8 років тому +6

      +mfchimichanga I Don't know about the alien things, but I do know that in the Yunque you can get easily lost and that it has never been explored to the center because it rains so much in there. There is some kind of superstition about the closer you are to the center the more it rains and you will get lost. It was a Sacred place for the native ameicans that lived there, In their mythology there was a god that live on top of the talles mountain in that forest (thats also the center of the forest)... That place is very mysterious... btw Yes i'm from Puerto Rico. Soo yeah i think your brother was talking about El Yunque.

One time I was walking to my hotel when I was visiting Puerto Rico and kids I didn’t even know who where playing basketball in the street asked if I wanted to play, very nice people. And when I was in San Juan while visiting I saw the mayor and he acknowledged my family and said hello to us!! It was really cool. And a bartender at a hotel we were at offered my mom and dad free drinks!!!!!!!

    Weeeepaaa. Que felicidad escuchar de mi gente -- thanks for the support everyone! Wish I could respond to everyone individually today. Les prometo mas sobre PR en el futuro. Y también aprecio los comentarios que se enfocan en los aspectos mas complicados del status "estado libre asociado" que tiene PR, tanto como los comentos sobre el crisis económico -- y claro, el desayuno. It's hard to be hyper-detailed in a five minute video, but keep the conversation going! Dejenme saber lo que quieren escuchar en el futuro.

    im sorry but he made the debt sound like its all the US governments fault and in reality its our fault. independence is only touchy because the like 10 percent of people who pro indenpendence are loud and mad at the status. almost half the island wants statehood

    • @Shadowstar1922
      @Shadowstar1922 8 років тому +10

      Well yea it pretty much is the US' fault. Puerto Rico can't operate its economy like state governments or the federal government. It's not so much as excessive regulation but the fact that there are some things Puerto Rico just isn't allowed to do. If PR had more autonomy and control over the island like state governments do then Puerto Rico would've easily become the Hong Kong of the Caribbean.

      Annette Rodriguez I get it b/c im Puerto Rican :D well not actually a lot of non-puerto ricans get it. you just gotta know the reality of the situation. I think moments like this, there is no debate. it's a fact PR has less economic autonomy than federal states and in order to save the lives of 3 million Puerto Ricans living in the homeland it needs to be known that it is not their fault. The US government knows that and they do not care.

    • @Pechupops
      @Pechupops 8 років тому

      When there is a problem you have to accept responsability. I'm not saying its all Puerto Rico fault and if we had more economic breathing room maybe we could manage the debt a whole lot better. But almost all of the debt is Puerto Rico's fault because with the people who have governed the island have done a poor job in fixing the crisis which is why I cam't see how if the people who have been in control now will do a better job independently. In fact i see it going even more catastrophic because then we won't even have the economic boost that we get for being part of the US.

    I love my island. I once described parrandas in a story as a moving party that just asks the neighbors for food. It's kind of like a carol but not at all cause you're drunk as hell, playing instruments and most of the songs are about getting drunk as hell and playing instruments... oh and not wanting to stop. Always about not wanting to stop

    • @Longlius
      @Longlius 7 років тому +3

      It's insanely complicated but basically Puerto RIco was a colony under the Spanish, the US fought a war with Spain and gained Puerto Rico as a result, and the last 100 years have been a juggling act of trying to figure out where Puerto Rico stands in relation to the US. The Philippines, another colony we won in the Spanish-American war, got its independence in 1946, but Puerto Rico so far has voted to just stay as it now - not a state, but also not independent. It's weird and not an ideal situation at all, but people of Puerto Rico so far have seemed to prefer the status of commonwealth to that of a state. Apparently a majority of people in Puerto Rico now want the territory to become a state but the governor is against this or something so there's extra complications on top of that.
