Just a small correction: Bahia is the state and the city is Salvador, it's capital. Out of Brazil the city is usually called "Salvador de Bahia" (it's Spanish and means "Salvador of Bahia"), so people won't think they are speaking about the Central America's country El Salvador, which capital is San Salvador.

Salvador de Bahia was the first slave market in the New World with slaves arriving in 1558 to work on the sugar plantations. Make sure during your time in Brasil to visit São Paulo. it is viewed as a melting pot city with several diasporas settling there.
