I just found out yesterday that my 90 year old grandfather still hasn't used any money from his retirement account! He still has a job, and he and my grandmother have had their home paid off since their mid thirties. I'm pretty sure he is the ultimate goal in frugality 😂.
To tell you the truth, I don't love the grocery audits. I think we are all so happy to have you back, Tawra, that we'll watch whatever you put out. I just really appreciate shows like this.
In the past, I have told myself that I work hard and I deserve this or that or the other. I'm a single mom and only make $15.60 an hour. Now I tell myself I deserve a clean, clutter free home. I'm working now on getting my home clean and organized I spend my money on paint and things to fix up my home so I can be happy in my space without the "stuff"
Being a minimalist is very smart! Living beneath your means is very smart!! Focus on the peace of mind that you have from having no debt and a comfortable nest egg.❤
I love all of it! I love seeing how to practically save money. Thrifty Tuesday, grocery hauls, thrifty tips, live shows, cooking shows, I love it all! You guys feel like family and I appreciate all your hard work.
I had a thought for those who may be aiming for a special diet. One of the best things we can do for our health and spirit is fasting starting with intermittent fasting and Working up to alternate day fasting. So maybe by incorporating this, they can buy less overall and have some more wiggle room to pay for the more expensive items in their budget.
When we were newly married (1981) we had very little money for groceries. Our treat food was popcorn. We bought the kernels and popped them, so it was a very cheap treat. We also ate a lot of Banquet pot pies, which were sometimes four for a dollar at that time. When my kids were little, they had eggs or oatmeal for breakfast, not sugar coated boxed cereal. Instead of PopTarts, my kids got toast with cinnamon sugar. We spend too much on groceries now, and I have instituted two cheap meal nights a week. One of those is likely to be breakfast for dinner, and another will be goulash, or some other meat-stretching meals. I eat a keto diet due to type 2 diabetes, but for me that just means I don't eat carbs, starches, or sugar. It's cheaper to omit those things than to buy "keto friendly" meals and snacks. It is possible to eat a special diet without buying specialty foods!
Do grocery audits twice to three times a month maybe and your regular videos rest of time to make it easier. I enjoy all your shows. Prayers for you and family.
I grew up on Oleo, but really prefer butter. I make sure to stock up when it's on sale. I don't eat a lot of it, but the stuff I froze was $1.60 a pound. That's cheaper than most margarines now.
My guilty pleasure is butter and good coffee. I buy butter only when it is on sale for $2.99/lb and freeze it. When it's gone, it's gone. If I see a bag of coffee beans reduced for quick sale I buy it and savour it. When it's gone it's gone. I swing by the grocery store on the way home from my night shift (7am) and thats when the meat department marks down their meats. 😁 I usually manage yo save up to 50% off my grocery bill every time.
I really enjoy the grocery audits because they give practical ideas. I also love seeing you 2 and Jill discuss practical ideas (replacement recipes for convenience foods). I don't really enjoy the "rants" as much, but I still will watch.
Last year I enlarged my backyard garden and grow a lot of our fruit & veg. I make our own tomato sauces and jams. Not exactly a homesteader but I feel great about growing and preserving a lot of my own food. This year, before retiring at the end of next year, I bought grow lights and shelving so I can up my garden production (I harvest my own seeds and that saves 💰 too).
When my parents died Hospice was constantly getting in touch with me for counseling, but I was blessed with a husband and adult children who supported me. I'm sure some may need it, but my faith also was a great support.😊
I totally agree with MOST of what you are saying. I do however, feel that there are one or two items that you feel strongly about, then do those two items and cut everything else. I personally eat butter versus margarine. BUT, I only buy it at $1.99/lb and have enough to last quite a while. I DON'T spend a lot of money on meat. I buy leg quarters, beef on deep discounts, pork on deep discounts, etc. I teach people to pick your battles. Save where you can so you can "splurge" on those one or two items. Now "splurge" may not be the perfect word. I mean a few dollars a month, not hundreds of dollars. I came home with my first at 3 months and have been "home" ever since. I've made money sporadically, but I've SAVED it consistently.
My beloved grandmother lived to be nearly 95 years old. For the most part she used margarine for many years. She could have afforded butter but she was careful with her money. She also ate a fair amount of Spam, Crisco or lard in baking (a significant sweet tooth,100% Swede). She kept all things in balance though and God blessed her, I believe, for a faithful life.
I needed this "rant" I am fine financially but I am stressed about what I should be stocking for the hard times that seem to be coming pretty fast. And I have a lot of GMOs in my pantry. I missed the warning about GMOs. Thank you for your perspective. I feel better knowing someone else is eating GMOs. I am surrounded by people that are totally against GMOs. And yes they eat out a lot. They are willing to spend the extra money to eat GMO free groceries. I am rambling. But I am having a mentally bad week. I just need to give myself a break. This video is perfect. Thank you!
Most logical advice on the internet! We are debt free but are saving every penny to build our shop and pay cash for it in January. Your videos and reality checks keep me focused! Can’t wait to purchase your cookbook once our shop is built ❤
So sorry that your business is down 60% right now. I was shocked, because you have such great content that is so valuable!! I hope it picks back up soon!! I know the Lord will bless you all for how you lift him up on your show and give people bibles if they request them for free! You have truly blessed my life!!
I bougied myself into nice things! Yes!! Spot on. I talk to my college kids all the time about that! Their friends waste hundreds on coffees and take out! My 5 kids save almost $60 a WEEK by taking lunch. Thats $300 saved for 5 kids.
I'm not a fan of the grocery audits. I prefer just to hear advice from you and your mom and your thrift finds, also recipes etc. You are wonderful and happy you are back!
I hate margarine. I use butter. BUT I will say I have no problem cutting down on my use. Personally if I have other things going on my bread, I don't need butter. If fact, homemade bread (made with butter) doesn't need more butter on it. As a whole, I do agree with your saying though. We don't deserve everything we buy
Single income family of 8-We still buy butter. We are debt free outside of the mortgage, but we are down to the last $95,000. We just keep plugging away!!
Monday- grocery audits, Tuesday- money , Wed- cooking show. I think what makes your show so special is that you talk to us directly..Your a home and family life talk show. I love that you talk about everything!!
How about entertaining the idea of taking us along on your grocery hauls, showing us your great deals and then bringing us home and sharing how you put up or cooking your deals. Love 💕 and Hugs. ❤❤❤
Tawra, Mike and Jill. I have learned so much from you, I really watch for sales now, and compare prices. I even Finally have my husband checking prices. For instance, if their is a sale on something, like 2 for a certain price, Hubby is actually checking now, to see if the one item, weighs as much as the two items. So many times the one item is the best buy. Every time I go to do things YOUR voice is in the back of my mind, and I do lot's of rethinking because of it. You really have helped me so much. One store here, last week, had great sales on 3 items I use. We went into the store and bought as many of the three items as we could afford. Except for the potatoes, Only bought one 20 lb bag. But got great deals on Bacon and Sardines. But I never even looked at any other items, AS I had gone through the grocery flyers, and only went for the sales. Some of it is for stock piling, the rest is to use, but replace when these great sales come around again. SO PLEASE DO YOUR SHOWS, ON ANY AND ALL OF THE THINGS YOU HAVE BEEN DOING. I LOVE watching ALL of them!!!! LOVE YOU ALL.
Tara, you look great in that color of top and Mike is perfectly coordinated! Happy Anniversary to you two! I have learned an incredible amount from all of you. It's like still being at home with family. You do things similar to my childhood, but I always thought I needed to improve what was being done, you know, like I deserve to go out and eat after working all day, rather than fixing a meal at home. I am ashamed of all of the money we wasted over the years, but we are debt free except for our mortgage. We are retired and paying the mortgage down quickly. I have your two cookbooks and we rarely go out to eat anymore. I have used your books a great deal! I am praying for you all concerning the direction of your show.🙏
I 100% agree with you about people bleating endlessly about being poor and then whinging more about how they cannot / will not give up things that are luxuries. The definition of insanity is expecting different outcomes without changing your choices/behaviours. I have a friend who spends $100 weekly on cigarettes and alcohol but expects me to help her financially. Repeat with most of my friends and relatives and I am choosing more and more to just keep to myself to prevent them from stressing me out. Tara, I love your honesty, and I have learned a lot from you over the past few years.
1...I'm embarrassed to admit it but this is a real problem for me! I'm too old not to know better but I'm trying to learn new habits! But I always 'reward' myself with treats.
It’s all about choices. I choose to buy coffee beans and butter but then I don’t choose to buy a whole bunch of other things. I don’t buy organic unless it’s cheaper. Way worse on my body to create stress in my mind about my food than to be at peace and stay in my budget.
Grocery audits were fine, but I like the ones where you speak to your viewers instead. The ones you slap the table and say "Get it together people" and scold them. I know it is repetitive, but it is fun. Do what actually makes you the most money, and what makes you happy.
Happy anniversary you two! I’m on a “special” diet because I don’t eat animal products, but I don’t buy “special” food. I just choose from the abundance of regular food that doesn’t come from animals. Such has been the case for over 30 years and I’m still not dead. Thank you for all you do - you are truly appreciated.
I Praise Father for your obedience in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and allowing Father's Holy Spirit to speak through you to get Father's messages out to everyone. In Jesus name ❤
This is my fave episode since you came back from your break, Tawra. Also the few Jill and Mike did when you were away. I’m 58 and did learn some from your audit shows. But im at a different stage of life than the younger ones with small children. Don’t ware yourself out if the audit shows are draining you guys. I love your rants and answering viewers questions on various topics. God bless . You guys are an encyclopedia of info. And thanks for all the laughs when I just wanted to cry. ❤❤❤
Yep , made not only food into a god , brand new cars, expensive jewelry, over priced weddings , over priced vacations, and don’t even get me started on the god of climate change We are worshiping the environment instead of the God who created it. And them overpriced farmers markets especially in central NC. Ugh . You tell them Tawra . Mike , love the way you support your bride. Me hubby is the same way. Except I’m not as brave as Tawra. You go girl!
My gut is so wrecked I can't tolerate plant food without becoming very sick. so for me I look for the best price on meat and poultry plus animal fats. It's a health issue not a need for luxury. We cut back on other things in the budget and are not in debt. As someone with food intolerances, I'm surprised you wouldn't have an understanding of that.
I was sitting with a family member that got high degrees (and had to work her way through) and another person. They talked so different than I normally heard the family member talk. I did not understand why it was different other than they went to college. My family member told me that she did not consider her degrees worth anything special, except for her to obtain a specific job. The difference is she understands what they are saying and she can answer so they understand. My family member use to work as a teacher. She does not work there now because of the school system now. The other person now works for circle K. You do not always make lots of money by spending a lot for college. My husband and I agreed that I would stay home and raise my children. All my children are Christians and respect their parents and elders. Also my relationship with my husband is wonderful. We have been married 53 years. We both tried to do what the Bible said and not what the churches or world said to do. We try to do what the Lord told us in the Bible. Of course we do not consider us better than the churches. There is none righteous no not one and that includes us. Love your audits. I liked the last one I watched that was shorter also. Love your rants also and you say it like it is. Yes Hodie Todie-I get that.
I appreciate the grocery audits.. Price wise I realize that it will be a bit different in different areas of the country....BUT LOVE seeing what other people get & their storage ideas. There has been a couple of new to me foods added here.
Jesus is coming back!!! There is no such thing as "normal prices." There is only the current price. The sad thing is that some people's wages have not kept up with the rising prices. While some peoples wages are absolutely exorbitant. Being wealthy in the United States is extremely luxurious. Being very poor in the United States is extremely hard. Death is the only thing that can't be avoided whether you're rich or poor.
Perhaps it is a selfish thing on my part but i would really enjoy learning more from you on your shows about gluten-free dairy free....converting, substituting, shopping to accommodate our health needs but not buying into the marketing ploys that take advantage of us in an already bad marketplace. It isn't addressed in many videos and you are so good at demos..direct and to the point. You have dealt with this dilemma of food for a long time and your cookbook is just the tip of the iceberg. You have much knowledge to share.
I remember during the 2008 crisis. Folks were literally days from being evicted, but still could not grasp changing spending habits! Instead of trying to sell and downsize, the year before, they stayed uj until sheriff sat their stuff on the curbs. Same thing happening now! People can not problem solve! They are good what to think, Not HOW to Think! This the downfall of our country and others.
I love the grocery audits! Seeing things laid out in front of me, "real time", puts me in that headspace I'm in when shopping. A lot of these messages I need to hear, especially margarine! I've been anti margarine since the early 90's! lol Old adages are the best, like beggars can't be choosers, waste not want not, plus other homily's which are crucial today.
Yay! I love it when you guys do a video together! I've been traveling for the last month and missed you. BY THE WAY, TAWRA JEAN. You once commented why people can't just pause the video when they are long. You see when I have your video's on, I feel like it's a visit with old friends, and I don't want to interrupt the visit. God Bless You and your family 🧸!
I am on fixed income and only by meat on sale. I do have a credit card but only use for repairs that I cannot pay for cash. When I pay off do one hundred per month. Love ideas
You are 100% correct. People need to live below their means. It's impossible to go back in time in any way shape or form. Things will always 100% of the time get more expensive in the future... there's no other way. You can't escape death, and you can't escape higher prices...
Happy Wedding Anniversary to you both! May God guide you in the direction for your channel at this time. I love the grocery audits but wonder if it's worth just doing them every couple of weeks to save time. I love the Q&A lives that give me lots of information & tips. Actually, I enjoy all of your vids & I'm excited to see your GF DF channel recipes. I totally agree that marketing sayings have really tricked people.... like "you deserve it" & "smells clean" etc!! Lies!! 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨
A happy anniversary to you guys. Hope you have a blessed one. My hubby and I will be celebrating our 36 on Valentine’s Day and have been together for 41 years, met at 17 and 19yo.
I just love you guys, l appreciate all you do to help others, I'm praying for Father's blessings, strength, protection, peace, and his comfort upon you and your family in JESUS name.
On the car debate .... We have always considered the cost of a replacement vehicle vs the cost of repairs and likeky upcoming repairs. This said, more often than not we have been able to do our own tune-ups, brakes, clutch replacement, and the similar; this cuts down on the cost of an aging vehicle 'cause reality is these parts are more maintenance than repairs if youve put some miles on a vehicle. While we enjoy all of the features which come via the car's electrical system, weve always steered clear of them because they just mean more to go wrong. For some time now, we've opted for older vehicles with as few chips as possible too.
It's better the car you know than the car you don't know. Unless you're buying new, you're buying someone else's headache.reepair it until you cant.. This opinion applies to Toyota, Honda and maybe nissan.
For an east coast foliage trip - in south central PA we are in peak colors right now! so if starting north, you may need to start in early October :) but chasing the colors sounds fun! Lots of towns have fall foliage festivals.
No! Not the poptarts!!! Blasphemous! Lol. Love your books including price book. All r so helpful. Hair and nails - should go to beauty school if still want to get it done. You can have it done but for much cheaper and you help someone gain experience. If you get a bad cut, it’s just hair and grows back! Think outside the box. Get it together people. Love your show.
I would love to see a mix of all the videos. Take your time with the longer ones and put out the fun one in between. I think most of us would watch them all. I love the audits it gives me inspiration I love the thrift store it helps me with prices for used things. I love the recipes bc in a recently new cook and cleaning tips and tricks I really need bc I have chronic fatigue as well. So basically all that to say I'll watch anything you want to make
With your help we paid off our debt. However, since we're now on a fixed income, you're right I can no longer afford butter, steak, cheese, bacon, alcoholic drinks. I'm also watering down my shampoo but haven't noticed a difference.
If people want things to change for themselves they have to be the ones to make the changes. It is up to them to do it. They asked for help and that is exactly what you did. My favorite is still the vegan woman that had the grocery audit. I am very proud of her. If people have questions they have got to do their own research. That’s what the internet is for.
Butter went on sale for 2.99 a pound so I bought a case of it. Still working on butter from a year ago. That is still expensive but I like my butter, but we are debt free so even on SS we can have our butter.
You are so right about use worshipping food, it’s crazy I used to help at my local food bank and to see people driving up with brand new cars and trucks with lots of jewelry, talking about how they just bought the new IPhone and expensive watches, gaming systems and on. I would think why are using the food bank when you have all these things you could sell and buy your basic needs with that money.
20 years ago I started a group at our neighborhood community center. I called it simple, decent living and a lot of the things that you’re teaching now is how I taught then. we never could afford pop tarts, pop and junk but did it anyway. Some people were not happy with what I had to say, but the truth of the matter is we got away from cooking from scratch we came to don’t want to use the word lazy but comfortable with buying whatever we wanted when we wanted it. If I could rephrase your thought, they have made snacks into their gods yummy items at Trader Joe’s, and the yummy items even at Aldi‘s
Tara, I've been getting 3 pounds of apples for $1.99. I stocked up. I tried the apple pancake syrup recipe you showed recently. I froze the cores and used them to make it. it was so delicious and economical! Thanks for another great recipe!
I like the grocery audits. However, do what is best for you in the way that it is best. I am a new viewer and FAN. You are helping me get prepared for retirement in just a few years.
My maternal grandmother made butter in a churn. I watched and helped. It was a day long process i think. Remembering from a mind of seven yrs and younger We can make our own butter easier now days right Tawra?
You’re right. There’s a lot of fear and demonization of food- all or nothing thinking. It’s priorities. If we want to eat butter or meat and avoid margarine or beans then other stuff has to give. Boxed cereal, soda pop, and “snacks” all chew up the budget. I prioritize butter and meat but I save by not eating “snacks” or baking sugary foods. Rice is great, I’m gluten free and gf special foods are expensive but rice and potatoes aren’t. Eating lower carb means I still enjoy rice and potatoes and veggies and I don’t eat a lot of fruit and I eat cheaper cuts of meat I buy on special.
Mike, there are lots of ways to support a good cause. Prayer is one of them. I would never throw money at any cause I didn't pray about first. Sometimes that kind of support will do more good than a dollar or two. Black Friday shopping - no, absolutely not! I made it a practice to defrost my freezer on Black Friday. I also refused to leave my property. I had tasty leftovers to eat so I didn't even need fast food.
I do because my rice stockpile went out of date a decade ago. I didn't repackage it out of original bags. It kinda smells. You can rinse that away. Also, I read the instructions on a basmati rice pkg and they advise you to rinse their rice.
I've always bought groceries like you. never made a menu just made what I had on hand. I used to love couponing back when they doubled coupons. I could get toothpaste and deodorant free. But haven't used coupons in years, now I use an app on my phone that gives discount's in the store.
What if you did this for example: grocery audit every other Monday so it’s not as time consuming, a cleaning video on the other Monday, every Wednesday q and a, cooking lesson every Thursday and a prep video every Friday. Just an idea to try out. You’d hit every nitch of those groups while possibly gettting more subs or just cookbooks sold to different audiences. I think it could work for a channel like yours really well. I’ve noticed since I’ve been watching you hit most of these and stay with one for a while then switch more permanently to the other ect.. but if on a rotation might be what you want.
You can make a raspberry cream cheese drink!! I loved those at a restaurant so made my own drink at Starbucks years ago! Raspberry and cream cheese syrup in vanilla frappe
I just found out yesterday that my 90 year old grandfather still hasn't used any money from his retirement account! He still has a job, and he and my grandmother have had their home paid off since their mid thirties. I'm pretty sure he is the ultimate goal in frugality 😂.
Yes I would say he is!
Isn’t there a required yearly disbursement each year? There is one on my husband’s accounts.
😅😅
I found butter today for $1:19 a pound at a grocery outlet. I bought 5 pounds. So thankful to find this deal.
Soooo jealous!!
1.19? Wow, what a deal.
You can freeze butter.
Go get 10 more ! 😂
Omg you lucky duck! I love Grocery Outlet 😍
To tell you the truth, I don't love the grocery audits. I think we are all so happy to have you back, Tawra, that we'll watch whatever you put out. I just really appreciate shows like this.
Love your position on food, no day care, and God.Stay strong sister, you and Mike and Jill are an inspiration and a fresh breath of air.

Im diabetic, Ive done keto/low carb for years. It CAN be done within budget! It doesn't have to be expensive.
I haven’t read my Bible in a few days and you all are talking so much of our Lord that I really can’t wait to read my Bible today.

My family loves cinnamon sugar toast and stovetop popcorn.
Still make cinnamon toast!!
Same, I usually do a taco night with mostly beans and rice, very little meat. Also a soup night. Saves a ton!
A rant from you is like gold to my ears.😊
I’m here for the rants.
I love them too!!❤

I eat GMO's they were engineered to increase production, resist disease and extend growing seasons. Millions would starve if not for GMO's.

The pressure to keep up with the current fear-based food trends is insane. Thanks for being a voice of reason and giving a better perspective.

We don't deserve everything we buy
I bought butter full price last week. It really posed a dilemma.
Whipping butter stretches it, and of course, there is pumpkin butter or apple butter. The price of mayonnaise got me, but it isn't hard to make.

I wanted to say to your mom Jill, l just love her too and appreciate all she does as well!❤️
Thank you so much - you sweet to say that.
How about entertaining the idea of taking us along on your grocery hauls, showing us your great deals and then bringing us home and sharing how you put up or cooking your deals. Love 💕 and Hugs. ❤❤❤
Happy 29 years together. May you have many more to come.
I am praying for you all concerning the direction of your show.🙏
Thanks for doing the show and the conversation, it is much appreciated!
I love my butter😂, I don't buy it unless it's a great price on sale. ❤
Right?? It’s not hard people jeez
vegan is very cheap if done, with sense
Normal isnt coming back; Jesus is!
Jesus is coming back!!!
There is no such thing as "normal prices."
There is only the current price.
As a chemist, I enjoyed your chemistry discussion!
Told what to think
I'm praying for Father to guide you in what He needs you to do. Be patient and wait in Father to guide you. Much love to you guys in Christ Jesus ❤️
I love you guys! Much wisdom! I'm in agreement with all you say. ❤
You three have been a blessing in my life ❤️ through watching your different videos you've encouraged me. And l enjoy watching your cooking videos.
So basically all that to say I'll watch anything you want to make
Absolutely LOVE your videos! I learn something in every one. Saving up to buy the cookbooks!
With your help we paid off our debt. However, since we're now on a fixed income, you're right I can no longer afford butter, steak, cheese, bacon, alcoholic drinks. I'm also watering down my shampoo but haven't noticed a difference.
Watching on Sunday, Happy Anniversary 🎉.And just prescribed.Thank you all so much for all you both due & Jill as well
Just subscribed to your garden channel, what a beautiful garden! You are making me covet my neighbours stuff!
People want they want when they want it no matter what else can just go out door.
We have used margarine from when I small and I'm now 67 years old.
I FREAKEN LOVE YOU AND THIS CHANNEL!!!!!🙆♀️
You are so right about use worshipping food, it’s crazy I used to help at my local food bank and to see people driving up with brand new cars and trucks with lots of jewelry, talking about how they just bought the new IPhone and expensive watches, gaming systems and on. I would think why are using the food bank when you have all these things you could sell and buy your basic needs with that money.
This is my favorite format.
Happy for more bible discussion but for the past 5 years have loved hearing the frugal living stuff!! Love from UK x
Happy Anniversary to you both! Love your channel ❤
Mike has a smirk on his face…😂😂😂
2!! You’re not crazy! I tell my family every meal is not a feast. Sometimes it’s just sustenance
I love your channel and the information that you give out.
I like the grocery audits. However, do what is best for you in the way that it is best. I am a new viewer and FAN. You are helping me get prepared for retirement in just a few years.
My maternal grandmother made butter in a churn. I watched and helped. It was a day long process i think. Remembering from a mind of seven yrs and younger
We can make our own butter easier now days right Tawra?
I can cut elsewhere and keep real BUTTER! Always buy on sale!
I can afford butter because I buy when it is $1.99 and store in my freezer:)
We get something nice every single day when we open our eyes ❤
But yes I have told myself that i work hard and i 'derserve' this or that..
I’m 55 and I had no idea anyone ever rinsed their rice.
I think this is a great idea!
Happy Anniversary! I pray Father's BLESSINGS ❤️ UPON your marriage in Jesus name
Just subscribed to your gluten free channel. Didn't know about it before. LOVE your gf recipe book! 😊
Great show it took me a couple of days to listen and read my bible...Love you guys
1...I enjoy the grocery audits, but if it's a problem that's fine.. I will still watch you.😊
You can make a raspberry cream cheese drink!! I loved those at a restaurant so made my own drink at Starbucks years ago! Raspberry and cream cheese syrup in vanilla frappe
Yes your so correct tell it like it is.
I like the grocery audit. But that is a lot of hours to put into it. I like the video that you are doing tonight.
