Ghost is unique, most bands just wear costumes and paint but they created a persona, a whole lore with back story, the lead singer even changing into new "characters" for each album. Its fun and different. Each album tells a story as a whole and one builds upon the next until prequelle where they changed it up some, even with the lead persona (as opposed to singer)
Yeah, I think it was around maybe their 3rd album, when people fond out Tobias was playing all the Papa characters. Was wild stuff being this, mystery band for a while. Also, their 1st record is like a gateway drug into the rest of their discography. They may get slightly more poppy per record, but if you've been there from the start you're like the frog in boiling water. It's very gradual and you just don't notice or care. LOL (Next track to check on the debut is Elizabeth. ANOTHER BANGER. Whole album is.)
I'd say the got more diverse and original, going from that vintage BÖC/Meryful Fate inspired sound to doing pop/metal/prog etc. I do really love their early sound/songs (maybe the most) The "pop label" of late, might have come from some more mainstream hits while their albums are more diverse.
No, it's not like a frog in boiling water. There's a big jump in "poppiness" from album 2 to album 3, but beyond album 3, it's just straight radio rock/hard rock. Everything after Meliora is generic trash (especially square hammer and rats). Their cover of Phantom of the Opera is also bad.
Strange how far Ghost has come. I love this early period, Opus and Infestissumam, which are very much about pseudo-satanism. But it has all the signs of the direction Tobias would be heading. Melodic, memorable choruses, mixed with heavy riffs, dark multi-layered lyrics... Looking at the entire discography, I struggle to find any of Ghost's material I don't like, with the possible exception of some covers. All the way up to the latest album, *Impera,* which has no fillers and is one banger after another (one song had me struggling for a while, but I've come to terms with it now!).
Great reaction. This is from their first album - they wanted it to be like a "found" album of some old 70's metal band - for me its a bit like Blue Oyster Cult or older Sabbath, with a big dose of pop sensibility. Tobias is from Sweden, and loved the Black metal from there, but also loved ABBA - and I think that explains their sound best.
This will always be their best album. It's hard to pin down their sound because they are such dazzling masters of pastiche. They take so many different styles and combine them and----with the extremely clever songwriting----they form it all into something that is both a great homage to it's influences, and also something even more than the sum of its parts. Truly nothing exactly like this has ever existed before, but somehow it still makes you feel nostalgic.
What I love most about Ghost and newer bands like Spiritbox and SleepToken, is that you can't pinpoint them to a genre. They just keep writing great songs and don't worry about people freaking out about it. They're not going to get put in a metal subgenre without a fight. And if you say they're not metal, they just shrug and keep writing songs the angriest Internet people will claim isn't metal despite the original metal bands being full of harmonies and what would be called "pop" vocals now.
I came across Ghost earlier this year and I've listened to them everyday since. I'm glad I came across them as a later fan because I have whole catalogues of songs to help shape my preception of Ghost. I feel that if I was an earlier fan got bits and pieces over the years, it be a whole different feel to it. Anyway, good review! Ghost is best listened to in sequence (start to finish).
Ghost is a fantastic band, in my opinion! I've listened to them since 2014, though I heard of them from their release but didn't gave them a chance. Opus eponymous is a masterpiece. It's their best album overall. Meliora is also a really great album. But after a while, you had these on repeat everything makes sense and you enjoy everything.
Great Band , saw them Live a couple of times but best show was at wacken 2018 when they played in the middle of the night from 1:45 to 3 am. That was amazing 🤘
I originally found out about Ghost when I saw them support Paradise Lost in 2011. I think and apart from their fans nobody really knew about them. I saw them again in 2017 on one of their own shows and they were pretty cool live then as well.
I agree, Ritual is the song that sol me on (older) Ghost :) It too me years. I could never understand why everyone like them. Late to the party, I listened to the first two albums again and again. And it clicked, and I liked it.
their first two albums are the best, I remember when I found out about them in 2013, opus and infestissumam were my everyday albums. then Meliora came out and I lost all interest, their newer albums are just plain crap
@@JacobsKrąnųgYeah man, there are some songs past infestissumam here and there, that i liked. But overall, I miss that soft, sinister shock rock sound they sued to have.
I refuse to believe that Martin Persner wasn't involved with the guitars on this album. If you listen to Magna Carta Cartel you can hear the songs feel almost like they could be the base skeleton to a ghost song
The chorus progression that you can't quite figure out mimics a heavy metal version of Toto's Africa.. And if you want your beach surfer song you need the track Gouleh/Zombie Queen
All the nameless ghouls and Tobias were anonymous until a court case happened that publicly released their names. When they did interviews back then they pitch shifted their voices and every interview Tobias was a part of he did as a nameless ghoul instead of Papa.
It's totally OK to enjoy this song exactly how it is \,,/ Also it's super cool that you have King Diamond's House of God album right above your shoulder.
He was taken to court over band earnings by other members of the band and was outed due to that he never chose to take the mask/paint off but was glad after as it makes it so much easier to be himself during the day and papa at concerts
Speaking of vibes.....this song has me thinking about the Scooby Doo cartoons......just saying...... Years ago I seen Ghost play live in St. Louis on the evening of Easter Sunday. If THAT don't say a few things........
Happy Halloween Kaiya! I really loved Ghost first few albums and EPs. I seen them around 30 times between 2012-2018. Got to meet Tobias a few times before everyone knew his identity. He isn’t a poser! He listens to metal! ( but a sell out now!) Ghost have a interesting story and he’s the mastermind behind the whole project. They had to call their self GHOST B.C. For their first few releases in the states someone else had the name Ghost. Also his identity became public because I believe all the musicians that helped him on the first recordings and touring sparked up a lawsuit and attempted to sue him. That failed. Lots of reading material (and watching material as well) for Ghost, check it out when ya have time!
I totally get why metalheads hate Ghost. Their early stuff is really awesome heavy rock. But then they tried to turn metal into pop, and metal is the antithesis of pop, by definition. This first record is cool because they were trying to do something different, but then they just went mainstream. It's a shame, this is a great debut!
yeeaahh, I don't think so. The lyrics are /decently/ satanic and dark, but it's not near the most evil songs ever created. it's probably not even in the top 100
Dont get me wrong i like a lot of Ghost songs, specially this one, but these tops simply dont make sense to me because the are only a certain amount of people that contribute to it and that cannot be an universal truth. Tops just make sense if its a personal one

Ghost's best album

best song and album by Ghost!

Ghost is great. They changed their sound slightly later on, but still consistently bring out good albums.
"slightly" is a big underestimation lol they changed their sound completely to pop hard rock

I love Ghost. Great song structures and harmonization. It's kind of difficult really defining their sound. They don't fit any particular genre.
Depends on which song. I have a very difficult time explaining what they are and their genre is. I just say ghost is ghost, like queen is queen.
