After checking with the knowledgeable staff at the Boulia Visitor Information Centre + chatting with other friendly campers/travellers at the Boulia Caravan Park, we planned a 4-day adventure that would see us travel 800kms of Australia’s Longest Shortcut from Boulia to Alice Springs. We prepared ourselves (and the caravan) to traverse the diversity of the country from red sand and clay to bulldust and gravel.
DAY 1: The first leg of our journey was from Boulia to Tobermorey Station (just over the NT border) - about 250kms. Their campground featured grassy, shaded camping sites and large communal fire pit. They also had a quirky 'Meathouse' Bar with rustic features - an Austin Truck (BBQ + firepit) and windmill shade structures!
DAY 2: We were up early and ready to tackle 215kms of the Plenty Highway to reach our next destination. Of course, we had to stop and marvel at the largest termite mound we have ever seen!!! We safely arrived at Jervois Station and set up in their large open area campground amongst beautiful gum trees, with plenty of cows wandering around.
DAY 3: Another day on the Plenty, and a total of 210kms to travel. The ranges looked spectacular, and it was a relief to finally hit the bitumen again. The Gemtree Caravan Park combined bush camping with gem fossicking and is also home to the heritage registered Old Mt Riddock Homestead Museum.
DAY 4: The final 140km journey to Alice Springs! We were happy to be on the wide-open Stuart Highway and saw several interesting points of interest: Tropic of Capricorn Marker & Northern Territory Highest Point Marker.
We were delighted to arrive in Alice and we were looking forward to exploring the town.
    Time to hit the road!

Thanks for sharing... We're looking at doing this trip at the end of July.
Great to get an idea of what to expect 👍

It's a great trip, Aaron! Do a check on the road conditions with passing travellers or at the Boulia Visitor Information Centre (especially if you are towing a caravan).

It's a great trip that one if you slow down and have a look around. We did the same trip as you several years ago, the only difference is we spent a couple of nights at those locations.

This Outback road scares a lot of travellers, but you are right, the station stays are awesome!

    Great video...
I come back that way from the Finke desert race in Alice on my bike.
I did come off once through a deep bulldust patch that tried to kill me on the eastern end haha.
    What a great road...👍

As they say in the Outback ... "You'll be right mate, ya just gotta drive to the conditions!" 😅

    Only just found your channel.
What it the road like from Winton?
We will be in Airlie Beach in june and looking at traveling west .
After watching your video on Boulia we may look at going from Winton to Boulia and back to to Winton then on to Longreach.
Have 4x4 and a " on road " caravan and it the road between those two places is suitable for such a trip?
    Cheers

it's a sealed road the entire way between Winton and Boulia. It's smooth sailing with only one town (Middleton) to break up the 360km drive. Happy travels!
