  • Whilst visiting my parents, I reminisce about the first hifi system that we ever owned. It included the classic Tannoy DC 2000 speakers that are with my parents to this day.

Tarun, my Acculabs are still going strong, never had any issues whatsoever on the 320, 440, and 450 pairs that I obtained back I 1978-1980. Play them daily but obviously not the audiophile set used with my tube amp. These pairs are connected to vintage SS receivers, Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood. Keep up the great presentations.

This brings up a lot of memories.. I think many of us became audiophile in comparable situations, having nice audio gear around at young age. In 1986, yes I'm that old too😉, I had been saving up for my first amp to drive a pair of 70's Celestions Ditton 44 speakers I got from an uncle.

Many years ago I went to an hifi show in The Nederlands and I heard a speaker from Tannoy driven by a Chord amplifier. I was amazed of the sound, I was blown away. This combination was heaven for me. Silky high tones, a midrange so fine and detailed and a bass very much under control. I have been listening for about more half an hour. I remember that my brother in law had to pull me away. The combination was sadly to expensive for me. Later on I discovered another Jem of a speaker: the Kef reference one who had also the same technology with the tweeter in the middle, easy to drive 90 db at 8 Ohms. That speaker had the same character. I had them for more than 25 years. When I wanted to buy a surround system I thought immediately on Tannoy speakers but I could not find a dealer in Belgium and to this moment Tannoy has no dealership in Belgium and in The Nederlands. What a shame.
    Greetings

I still have a pair of Tannoy DC 3000's which are still partnered with an Arcam Delta 60 amp, Arcam Delta 170 CD Transport and an Arcam Black Box 2 D/A, they have now been regulated to garage but still sound great today, we moved house 20 years ago and my wife said then the Tannoy's were too big for our front room! They have set in their boxes for 19 Years until I decided to fire them up whilst training in a small gym I have set up in the garage, the Arcam equipment has been in daily use in my office for the last 12 years partnered to a pair of Monitor Audio Bronze speakers until upgrading the amp with a Crown Drivecore XLS & Presonus USB Interface to the PC last year.
Very much like yourself it was my Dad who got me into Hi-Fi, I trailed around the Hi-Fi shows with him. He is still has his original Celestion Ditton 44's which he still uses, unfortunately his Goodman's 110 amp, SME tone arm and BD1 Connoisseur turntable are long gone! I very much enjoy vintage reviews, not everyone has financial means to keep buying the latest equipment. Keep up the good work on your channel :)

Great video! I have had the DC3000 and DC1000. Both great soundstage. The problem with the 3000 was that the DC and bass driver are both in the same enclosure. I had the sensation that the different frequencies disturbed each other. The DC1000 did not suffer from this problem, but still the plastic driver, despite a lot of detail lacked transparency and coloured the sound. Still the DC design driver is very nice. I enjoy the previous Profile series (D50) very much combined with a Nad C370 and a Rel subwoofer.

It's always interesting to see how other audiophiles have started out, so thanks for sharing your first system Tarun. My first seperates system consisted of a Technics SU800 amp, with matching cd player of the time (can't remember the model), which I bought from my late wife's uncle for £50, a pair of Mordaunt Short HT 30 speakers bought from Ritcher Sounds for £99 a Denon TU260L tuner and a Technics RS BX501 tape deck, both also from Ritcher Sounds. Much later I added a Clear Audio Turntable, which cost way more than all the other gear put together lol! I still have the tape deck, but everything else has gone now :-)

I had (actually still have) a Marantz CD50SE this was my first proper bit of HiFi kit, I added a pair of Wharfdale speakers cannot remember which model but on a pair of industrial stands and this all went through a Marantz P45 amp (I think that was the model). A Sony cassette deck and a Rega 3 turntable were added some months later. Eventually the amp and speakers went, to be replaced by an Arcam Alpha 8 amp and KEF Q35 speakers, everything then ended up in the loft for 20+ years and what is usable is now being sold on e-bay. I still have the first CD that was put through the CD50SE, a compilation entitled Rock City Nights, it always brings back fond memories when played. Nice video, always good to reminisce.

Ahh, fun. My first system was bought with my first money from my first job, and my dad and grandad came along with me. PM44se, A maranta CD player that's only just been killed by an electrical surge in my dads system and is back in my posession. Too far from where I'm sat now to check the model number though. And to round it all off, Tanoy M3 floor standers. Ah, I loved that system the speakers stayed with me until about 5 years ago when I heard what music could sound like on a better system and there goes all my spare money:D
I still have the M3's, nostalgia kept them with me. Perhaps they'll get wheeled out for a kitchen system or something.

I bought a NAD 3020 for £89 & a pair of Mission 700's for a little more. 40 years on the budget amp is still in use as a power amp partnered with a late Audiolab 8000c pre. Ahhh many thanks Tarun, now you're speaking my language; Clasic / vintage gear, brilliant. As I've already mentioned my current HiFi set-up is mainly from 1988-91 and I still love it, although I have a bit of the same 'upgrade bug' or 'itch' when it comes to speakers. I know I keep talking about this but after a very successful shop test they're bringing the B&W 702 S2's to my home on Tuesday for a test in my environment with my classic system. If all goes well, which I think and hope it does then in a few days I'll be a very happy owner of these speakers, but I still intend to keep my 32 year old KEFs as secondary speakers. Ohh and thanks too for finally giving us an insight to not only your HiFi beginnings but to some floor-standing speakers! Regards, Keith.

My first system bought I n the mid 80s as a teenager consisted of a Technics SU-V40 amp, Celestion DL6 speakers and a Technics SL-P320 CD Player. I then added a couple of tape decks, a Technics RS-B405 and an Aiwa AD-R550. I had the two decks so that could copy music for and from my friends at school. I later added a tuner and turntable. I still have all of it apart from the speakers, I’m not sure what happened to them, and the amp. I took the amp to someone’s party and it was connected to some unknown speakers, after a while it cut out and never worked again. I didn’t know at the time but I seem to remember that these were some sort of disco speakers and must have been very low impedance which burnt out the amp.
The other components all still work although the Aiwa tape deck needs a belt. I don’t use them anymore but I can’t bring myself to get rid of them!

Copper chassis you say? The inexpensive stuff is all plastic chassis since right about then. Sounds like a pretty decent spec setup. Not surprised to hear that the CD player didn't last, seems to be the rule. Glad the speakers survived, I inherited my Dad's first set of real speakers from the 70s - they do duty in the garage along with a set of their bigger brothers from the same Era. Love the old stuff. Had a thrift shop Marantz receiver running them for years with the blue glow and the big flywheel tuner. 12 W per side! We tend to forget how expensive electronics was in the 70s. Am I rambling like an old man yet? I enjoyed the video...

Nice littel video Taran l enjoyed that a lot. We are off a similar vintage and grew up lusting over the same gear I think. I went down the Technics road and believe it or not l still have most of those components in the shed at home. I did however by a JVC tuner which I thought was magnificent at the time. I was lucky enough to land my dream job putting stereo cabinets together and making coffee for the sales team at a local Hi-Fi shop after school when I was 15. That's where my love of audio began. Thank you for sharing. I think my first system may have been in 1981 analogue centred. Dual T/T, AR18s speakers and. Sony amplifier which slightly cheaper than the famous Nad 3020. Swapped the Sony in 1984 for a pre and power amp from Meridian, big jump! I've had three sets of Taanoys settling now with immense xt8f.

The DC2000 are, as far as I know, predecessors to my D900 from the late nineties. They have the same 12” Dual Concentric and 12” Bass cone but a sleeker design. I still love the sound and would only trade them in if I would get that same warm, deep and roomy sound back again, with a bass going down to 28 Hz I don't need an extra woofer. The D900 roll off as well and I am thinking of finding a matching extra tweeter. When I listen to modern speakers they sound more sterile and lack charm, like those new 4K or 8k televisions: the image is so sharp that it looks fake, more resolving than the human eye. To me it is the same with modern speakers. Think I will stick to my D900 for a long time to come.

Awesome.. Great to reminisce.... I think we're very much the dame era... Though have to say tannoy loudspeakers haven't featured in a system for me since my grandads Mercury Mk2... and knowing (quite rightly so) your passion for ProAc.... I have long moved on from my beloved Super tablets (bought 87/88?)
I so vividly remember the release of each of those components you mentioned.. Proper trip down memory lane.. Making me think back to trips around London to dealers to get a feel for what was about..

Some things require a little love to get them back in fighting condition. Replacement of components is unavoidable in time. Belt replacements are also. Vintage gear is just as capable when you impress your time, will and money on it. Why waste it on new if there is only parts replacement required. I have no new gear. The gear I have is scheduled for restoration soon so I will be replacing the components required with even better ones. Quality of parts matter. It’s called upgrading. You have to love and respect what you have when what is offered is out of reach. There are alternatives to the dumpster. Worthwhile components then are even better with better quality matched parts per channel. They will outlast you if you do it right. Cheers Tarun! Stay safe my mates!😊👍🏻😷

from Mitsubishi midi hifi system with speakers from 1989, adding a Sony midi CD player suitable for my Kenwood midi Hifi rack, Denon DRM-710 Tape deck, replacing Mitsubishi by Kenwood Receiver (bad choice), trying with B&W DM 302 speakers for rescue, university change to Rotel & bigegr B&W's + Marantz DR 6000 CD recorder, then 2 x Kenwood midi dream systems, and then it began: 4 x Rotel, Kenwood, collecting vintage 90ies hifi seperates, Akai, Tape decks, then Naim Audio systems, then horn speakers, then buying second hand the same JVC amplifier / B&W speakers that my sister had and I was jealous of, and without her permission connected her speakers to my amp, and my amp to her speakers and I never got her good sound. Then came a Rotel pre / power, Philips CD 880, 2x B&W DM 580 speakers, headphone Sudgen / Grado headphones + Grado inears. Then I bought the same Mitsubishi amplifier and tuner to find out if my unit in the 80ies had a hiss problem and yes, it did as the second hand Mitsubishi amplifier is dead quiet. Focal desktop speakers, Trio vintage amplifier, MB Quart speakers I sold (hated the harsh top end) 7 years no new acquisition and now a Sudgen amplifier and ??? new speakers :-)

Thanks Tarun. Ah, Audio Memory Lane. At that time I still had my cable business, and it was customary for other manufacturers to sell their products to each other at an "Accommodation" price. 50%off or 40% off for an import to someone in the business. I used the opportunity to develop a reference audio system at bargain prices, and also got to write it off taxes. It was a lovely time and I had about $25,000 invested in a system with a constantly changing cast of characters. That's about $50K in todays money. Now my investment is much more modest. At one point I had Coda mono block class A amps, Carey tube mono amps. Chapman and Magnapan speakers, VPI turntable with Dynavector, Something from Bryston, maybe a preamp. Memory fades but was fun. Retail is not as much fun. Heh.

first hifi for me was that very turner (still in cupboard), a JVC AS-3 Amp (sat to my left right now, not used in years, but kept for sentiment), a denon double tapedeck and denon cd player, using my Dad's old scandia speakers (got when i was 2, i'm now 45)
Funny how times change, current system:
    Proac D20r
sondek lp12 (dynavector 20x2), trichord dino MkII and psu (as aside, grew up in waterfoot, less than quarter mile from linn factory, used to cycle round it as was getting bulit)
    digi - macmin/audiravana/rega dac r
Now you may note, not mentioned amp, as I'm waiting with baited breath for delivery of a Gato Amp 150 to replace my Roksan Caspian m2. Not sure if i can go this ballin' atm, but also thinking of upgrading to alpha-audio.net/review/review-metrum-acoustics-onyx/, about time i had some balanced inputs

Experiences with vintage KEF speakers tend to point to the HF driver ferrofluid gunking up and the blue EL caps going bad. These capacitors should be replaced with new units from the same manufacturer (Alcap) since the crossover expects some resistance from this electrolytic cap. If the EL cap is replaced with some audio grade film cap then the crossover goes out of spec.
