Thank you so much Sean. I have just had a tragic loss in my life and am an empty shell now. I did not think I would pick up my camera again. At least I did not know when. But I might have been able to draw from the pain and have just this week taken my camera out of storage. I suppose that it may become a form of therapy as well. I love your channel Sean. Amidst all of the online noise and brouhaha around photography, your channel is one of the most thoughtful and rich. A young archery student in Japan once asked his teacher how to perfect his archery. The teacher replied something to the effect that the student should strive to make himself perfect and then just practice his archery according to his own nature. Photography feels to me like an inexhaustible and lifelong opportunity for growth and learning. What it continues to teach me and what I learn about myself from it, makes my life all the richer. The visible results of it are just milestones on a journey, but the journey is truly the essential bit.
I’m a photographer In the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’m not tired of it, but I’m tired of what I know the most, but… every time I go to the city I say “what am I doing here, I don’t know street photography.” I was literally there earlier this day saying that very thing. And here you are with the same (although completely opposite) message. Thank you
Photography is a constant learning experience and we cannot be expected to just churn out perfection every time. The process of constantly learning and improving is the whole point to photography. If we get good at a particular way of photographing and keep repeating it, there is no longer a challenge or a stimulus to keep moving forwards. Feel good about your photography journey and ignore the negativity form people who don't know you. They will be just as 'imperfect' as you are, probably more so.

Thanks because I started at 45 with something i never understood or imagined I had a passion for and now I am in the process of starting a channel change is always hard but when you do what you love nothing can stop that.

This video spoke to me on many levels but most importantly Photograpically, Philosophically and Motivationally. I've spent the past 5 months in hospital for emergency neck vertebrate surgery then in a Rehabilitation facility learning how to walk again...using a walker and cane. I'm being released in 2 days and I've been contemplating how my new reality will affect my Photography Journey. The timing on my watching this video is one of Life's mysteries...but I believe Providential. Thank you for your experiences and sharing! BTW - just ordered Volume 5 to be shipped to me here in Japan!
My photography was narrowing into a single niche and only the one genre I did the most stayed. But that also died with seeing the relevant people less often.
I want a change, I got s new lens and I brought the camera with me every day for the past two weeks. I took it out twice and never looked for a shot.
My current hope is a photography course I am taking at university, to bring in some assignments and new people. But it hasn't brought much yet.
Our pictures is a projection of our existence.
For what it's worth, my experience (age 75) fits your thoughts and expectations. Failure is honorable, not to try is reprehensible.

At 76 I too agree with your observation. Change is the default of life not the exception. Onward all.
Embracing the suck is what photography is all about for me. There are a few things I feel competent in and photography is most definitely not one of them. Weirdly I still enjoy it. But I constantly find myself having to fight through how bad I (think I) am at it. But pushing through that in a creative hobby means confronting my insecurities about myself as a creative. And if I can do that, I can push through a lot of other things.
One of the great things about travel is that you're often in very different scenes than you're used to. I get stimulated when I shoot in new places. I've got two trips booked this year already. My other goal is to shoot more architecture and urban photography near home. You're right, you can't get better and more comfortable at something if you don't do it.
Sean your talks, your philosophy are so inspirational to me. "Wherever I go, there I am" - this came to me having just returned from a very challenging trip to the west coast of Scotland, definitely outside my comfort zone of woodland photography but definitely "embracing the suck". Once I realised this of my perspective of where I am I felt I could meet the challenge.

Best thing for my personal photography journey has been completely changing my subject matter. From exclusively just shooting street photography now hiking fells and hills of the UK has been the biggest learning curve and challenging me to find compositions and subjects to suit my style.
I’m planning a move from Sydney to Bangkok. And it’s not that long since I moved from Chicago back to Sydney. Every change of location has made my photography better, without question.

Thanks for this. It is so easy to get caught up in the noise of the day, and not see that a "change" is what is needed most. Just to let life take you away. My wife and I call it the Gypsy Wind...and I can feel it blowing.

the gift of not have a specific style either because you are new or just haven't come to find it yet, is that there is no fear to try anything new because you have yet to define a style therefore it is easier to adapt, or at least, you are more willing to adapt.
When I was younger I was living in my car relying on photography to save up for an apartment in a new city. I am now a decade into living in that city, looking to move onto another. Things are so different now, I barely know where to begin. This was a good start. Thanks, Sean.

The greatest thing I get from your videos is your perspective in photography and how it translates to that of your life in general. As a consummate introvert, I'm quite allergic to people in general, so portrait photography, and to a lesser degree, street photography, are right out as avenues for my artistic expression. So, I was glad to see that you've put yourself in an environment that exposes you to more landscape photography opportunities than can be found in London. Of course, your journey is YOUR journey, so what I'm looking for is irrelevant to that. But, I hope to see more videos in the landscape genre and hear your perspective as you progress in your development! Good luck to you on your journey!
I think that many people, not just photographers, fear change because they are basically insecure in their lives. They depend on the familiar to remain grounded to a point that familiar settings and actions are a crutch. And, change isn't comfortable. Adapting to a new context requires work. Change is good. Without change we'd still be living in caves. And regardless of conscious change, we all change to some extent even in familiar situations whether for good or bad. So embracing change as a positive challenge makes us grow. Good video! I may share it in Facebook.

I shared this video with my MSc students starting a new semester and being challenged by me to change the way they think and approach problems (the course has nothing to do with art or photography). The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. One comment "This is just what I needed!". So thanks Sean, good luck and keep changing.
Great perspective as always, Sean! Another point to add is that those points in one's life where you lean into the change often become the pivotal moments upon reflection. It's always scary in the moment, but almost always worth it.

Thank you for this. I’ve been struggling with a different type of change. After an accident last year I went into survival mode. At first, I tried to be a good girl and push through the pain and trauma. Finally at the end of the year I started crying and didn’t stop for 4 days. At the end, I came out looking at a new future with hope and determination. Still haven’t talk a lot about the process on video or to friends, but I will. And for the record, I love the work you’re producing now.
those people criticizing your new work have their own personal issues they need to deal with. of course we should be open to criticism as an artist. but as you bring up often we should make sure we're doing things for the right reasons. and if it means anything, I'm with you for the ride. i feel like I've grown to know some bit of who you are and that is as valuable as your excellent photographs. i think we share a lot in common, and i love hearing your views and insights...

Thank you so much for your perspective! I lived in Los Angeles for 45 years and hated every minute that I moved to rural upstate New York. I have been going through the "suck" period, but love your views. You inspire me to keep looking for the beauty in no man's land!
Sean was offline during the lockdown in part due to a tough period of dealing with all that was going on. On the other side of this, I too am seeking change so this video spoke to my soul and made me really emotional - I hadn't realised you moved either as I came off instagram. The thing that you have to know is that you hit a sweet spot where you give a kind of therapy with these videos - they're almost like mentoring and coaching. That is still there no matter what change you might be going through in your creative style - that seems to be part of your DNA and fabric of who you are in this space (maybe the priest is still there :-) although this too may change as you do. But that is what draws me to your content, that you share your journey so openly and encourage us all so freely. You're a great example of living the adage 'of there being enough to go around too. You're a safe space in this place and I come back here often for grounding. It also helps me to connect to my photography when I can bring my whole self to the camera (whoever that is) - and you help with that. Anyway! I've rambled but wanted to say how much you and your journey mean. Congrats on the move. P.s. I love the analogy embrace the suck (although I'd doubt you'd ever.) Those 'postcard' shots (as you call them) at the end were stunning. Your photography is very calming.
Sean: as usual you have managed to touch us with your messages and your imagery. Change is inevitable: we can seek and embrace it, or have it thrust upon us - as in the loss of a close family member. I totally related to your concept of the 'suck' and the needs to adapt to be able to thrive in the new reality. I can see from your message and your photos that your style is altering to adapt to your new environment and reality, and I welcome whatever comes of that - for you and for those of us who find joy in your work.

Hello Brother Sean, as I mentioned when I started watching/following your channel 3-years ago, you're on a mission. Your photography remains stellar and it's certainly evolving --that a good thing. Sean, many thanks for being very open a clear about change. The only thing constant in life is change (Winston Churchill I believe) I am growing back into photography having reached a point where I no longer felt confident in my ability to see clearly what was the opportunity. Although I now live in the tropics I harp back to Yorkshire for it’s richness in colour, texture, light and people. I have set myself a goal of going out and really looking with a renewed perspective. Good luck in your new environment

For a long time, I really only made good photos while traveling. Familiar, pretty suburbia didn’t trigger much visual excitement. Worse in covid, of course. Flowers,( especially wintry wilted ones), local nature preserves for wildlife, small-city abstracts. Does sometimes get a little old. Loving your “Gateless Gates”.

So very well said Sean, too many photographers get stuck in their ways, branding themselves this or that, then moan that what they usually shoot isn’t available or the wrong type of weather…then shoot something else, try something new, it can only make you a better photographer in your chosen genre should you have one.
I have a passion for Street Photography, probably not everyone’s choice of Street Photography, or they would class as Street I should say but, who cares? Not me, I’m a hobby photographer that shoots most genres because I choose to, I choose to for me, not them or anyone else, just as you yourself do Sean but, it’s others that have the issue not us.
Keep up the great work and keep doing what you do, for you ( and to put food on the table of course ).
I’ll be picking up the new book soon hopefully, missed 1 & 2 but have 3 and 4.

While I do miss the photos from London and the effort that went into them, seeing the countryside, the old churches and how light and shadow play in a different landscape is just as interesting to me. Somedays I see a photo and and it’s catches my eye and I spend time with it, it could be some incredible mountain view or just light peeking through a window, it’s not always about what I expect from certain creators because most, if not all do something completely different than what gets them to a bigger audience. What draws me here isn’t just the images although they are fantastic and have helped me grow, but the story you share with us and you’re struggles which I relate to. You don’t lecture or seem forced when you share information which is a skill and I always get excited when I see a new video come up.

I started taking skateboarding photos of my friends when I was 13. Then later for magazines in the 90's. When I moved to NYC to go to SVA for photography, I worked first at night for the NYPD taking crime scene photos. I assisted for years for a great studio photographer in the age of film that taught me more about the techniques and art of photography than any time I spent in school. I also assisted big fashion photographers and then later shot for a lot of European and American fashion magazines as well as a few campaigns. I shot bubble gum for stock agencies. I shot portraits for music and news magazines. Recently, I have started shooting the alleyways of my neighbourhood in the most clinical and repetitous way possible to see what comes of it. My point is that doing the same thing in photography over and over again your whole life, to me, is an absolute waste of all that photography has to offer you. As with any art form, to limit yourself to one single mode is really limiting all the joy and wonder and challenges that trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone and seeing what, through time and practice, you can bring of yourself to whatever facet of it you are pursuing.
