    Thanks so much Mr. Hicks for another engrossing presentation. Re: Laura Secord, she was a real figure in (and heroine of) Canadian history, specifically the War of 1812. She warned a British garrison of an approaching American army after walking miles through thick forest (in Upper Canada, near present-day Niagara Falls). So, the chocolate company adopted her persona.

      Some people may think naming a chocolate company after her is so little, but I wouldn’t be complaining if I were her. Laura Secord chocolate is absolutely delicious.

    Thanks Kevin it's great to hear from people that know the difference between what flags represent and what they mean to people, I used to put up a quad of flags over a memorial to English, Dutch, American and (because of the rules) Australian, submariners. As a result I almost fell into the trap of becoming a flag nerd, not because of the nations involved, but for the people that hold them dear. Clearly your Turkish friends loved you mightily to for ever connect the Union flag to your good self. Huge respect too you. 🙂🇦🇺🏴‍☠️

What a wonderful story, one that should stand as a testement to the British people in these days of diminishing national identity and removal of tradition.     The first Canadian flag had the union flag as its emblem. My grandfather is Canadian with Scots heritage. I can trace the family back further when the British fought the French in North America.

      My great grandfather fought in new Caledonia met his wife there and returned to Kent UK. Where he became PC number 1 in the Kent constabulary..

      Me too. One was a lieutenant and fought at the Battle of Quebec (British, another was a drummer in the French Army, and I have many more.

    We got the little flag cut out at school in the 1960s. Everyone got one. Seeing it again after 56 years brings back memories.

    Thanks for the video - lovely story.
    One of my first jobs as a midshipman on a Frigate was to oversee the flying of flags, including the Union Jack from the jack staff, on leaving Portsmouth harbour.
    I went forward with two ratings who fixed the flag to the halyard and hoisted it onto the staff and off we went.
    After passing the Admiralty offices at the entrance to the harbour I was called to the bridge where the Captain reprimanded me for putting the Union Jack up, upside down!
    It was a prank by the ratings - who knew what they were doing - and I've never forgotten which way up the flag goes...
    Wellington, Kipling, Churchill and Lt Chard at Rorkes Drift all called it the "Union Jack" so that's OK with me.

    The original version didn't have the Cross of Saint Patrick until about 200 years after creation of the flag of Great Britain.
    It's also one if the few flags with the length being double the height, although can also be found in 3:5 height to length ratio. Most other flags are in the proportion 2:3.

    thumbs up. much respect you've had quite a career. as a child i simply thought it was the prettiest flag and felt off when it was replaced. thank you for the history. 2 years is longer than my 6 months there. i respected the turks i met more. i remember arriving in nicosia and being trucked to kyrenia. about every 300 yds was a roadblock and a bren gun at least. when we left six and a half months later there were only a few road blocks. i was invited to a british base to a christmas party that year and brits are a amazing bunch. i hadn't thought of it in years they were very cordial and outgoing. much respect to an outsider. i saw small towns in ruin from fighting. saw people eating out of our slop barrels from the mess and competing with dogs for a bit of meat or potatoe. one man had clothes fashioned from sand bags. i never saw such poverty. cyprus is a beautiful place. people still live in the castle town of famagusta. you must have seen a lot in the military police. now i am remembering to much to write. back to the flag i was born under. there has been plenty in canada that have no love for britain it not being there ancestral home. so the flag went for the present one. the odd time i hear get rid of the govenor general representing the queen. it is my favorite flag. god bless

      @@thehistorysquad hi kevin thank you. i was born in belloram newfoundland in 1945. newffie was a colony of britain at that time so i guess i'm a colonial brit. my father was a colonial policeman called a ranger. he got a citation from the king once for walking 50 miles to bring back 3 escaped prisoners. poor dad caught up to them on a railway track. one young fella began to cry. dad took out his pistol and said they had to come back. he was not a mean man.
      one granfather was a scott robertson. one was welsh chynne. the williams were all english.
      i must tell another dad story. my mother said once this is the kind of policeman your father was. he arrested a young guy for stealing fishing nets. my mom was at the little jail and dad went to the store and got her a ice cream which was a rarety in 1945. the young prisoner said what is that i've never seen that before. so my dad went and got the young guy a ice cream. my mom said that is the kind of policeman your father was. sounds like a pretty nice guy i said. now i remember to many stories. he was not a mean man. to much writing again. thank yew kevin. take care gare

    That was a beautiful story. I’m an American flying the Union Jack in celebration of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. It’s a beautiful flag. I want to look up the one with the Wales Dragon.

    I was also in the UK Armed Forces, Army as were generations of my family before me. We always referred to the flag as the Union Jack.
    At the Union of the Crowns in 1603, James (French Jacques for James, and he signed his proclamation as Jacques) devised the flag as you recount.
    Now with James (Jacques) accession to the crown of England, as well as Scotland, the French referred to it as the "Union Jacques" Union of James
    and I believe that is where the Union Jack came from but Union Flag is also acceptable.
    Excellent story and the Bovril company also have some charming information on the subject.

    I have a flag that I carried with me on my first combat mission as part of the GWOT. (More or less smuggled it aboard the jet. A mere 26.3 hours later I was back at base and ready for a nap! Those missions were brutal on us, but that was just part of the job.
    Having been based in (mostly flavors of the Commonwealth) "foreign lands," I give the proper respect to the local flag. It is the right thing to do.
    But nothing compares to the Stars and Stripes. It symbolizes my home. It is a thing of honor that demands reverance, and sober reflection upon what has been done in its name. Did we have slavery? Yes, and it was in contradiction to our founding principles. The framers of our government laid the foundation for the end of slavery (including some who owned slaves), and fought a Civil War to end it. Racism? Sexism? Name it, and we have done it wrong. And then we worked to make it right.
    The Constitution of the United States of America starts thus: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity..."
    To form a more perfect Union? Not perfect, but more perfect than we were before. That means we get the privilege to work every day to make it better.
    That is why I love my Flag. I want it, and the Nation it represents, to be something my children can love too.
    Long live the Republic.
    Peace to our Allis, and better sense to our Enemies. 😉

    Can I say thank you for being you I am born in England moved to Australia when I 1970 and love your channel history is everything it's who we are and where we come from and you are amazing the places your been and the impact you've made on this world from your time in Ireland to being a policeman and evern your time at Nottingham and Warwick castle which I've had the pleasure of seeing you there is all I can say is thank you you are a legend and I mean that in the nicest of ways if ever you come to Western Australia please let me know I'd love to meet you thank you again hope this finds you happy and healthy

    That’s a really clever little thing. I’m not sure how well the hand of Ulster will go down in N.I., especially as the Sinn Féin look likely to be the majority party for the first time.
    Kevin you are an amazing person who hides your light under several bushels. Though it’s not much, I’m truly proud to be a Patreon of this amazing channel. My friend, who I’ve previously mentioned was an MP was stationed in Hong Kong, he has similar feeling towards the people there and is fighting for those who served this country to be recognised.

      Sinn féin even in power will face heavy resistance, Everyone knows they still have ties to the IRA and since the IRA are still planting car bombs so the horrors of the IRA is still constantly fresh on the mind.

    My dad was a tenth royal hussar dessert rat and we lost him 30 years ago. I do miss all those debates we used to have. I remember the Magna Carta being so important to him he drove me all the way to see it in the 80's. I do miss his conversation. God bless you Kevin and thank you, your doing a great job.

    Since Australia has British ancestry and heritage, the Union Flag/Jack is part of the Australian Flag, it also features white stars on a blue background forming the southern cross, and another white seven pointed star under the Union Flag that represents the states and territory of Australia.

    As an American, whenever I start hearing about the British monarchy, my eyes kinda roll back in my head. Like, I need to remember presidents, I can't be bothered with someone else's leadership.

    Wales never agreed to be incorporated into England during the act of annexation. It's ironic that the oldest standard of Britain has zero representation on the flag. Enjoyed your presentation and Heddwch in the ancient tongue of the indigenous British, which means PEACE.

    The Union Flag is in the top left corner of the State of Hawai'i flag, representing the close relationship between the Hawaiian monarchy and British monarchy. Thank you for explaining the flag. ❤

    That was certainly the best and quickest explanation/description of the Union Flag. Vexillology and heraldry is also an interest. As I spent 22 years searching for the correct family arms dating from the Duchy of Savoy. A matriculated version ☝️. I'm sure that your flag means as much or more than any personal decorations from Her Majesty

    Beautifully flag. I treasure a Union flag sticker a Royal Navy sailor gave me when I was in Basra attached to the British army in exchange for cleaning her rifle (I’m a retired US soldier). Good memories 😊 I also have American flags from different bases I was in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Flags are interesting. Most dont realize that the confederate flag from the US Civil War looks the way it does b/c the south is mainly populated by Welsh & Scots-irish people. So you get the crosses of Andrew and Patrick w/ the stars of the southern states. Things get even more interesting when you get into why the colors for so many countries are red, white & blue. That story goes all the way back to ancient Egypt.

    Thank you Kevin! So interesting, as usual. Thank you for sharing your personal military memories. The Cyprus story was especially moving. Also, I'd known of the crosses of St. Andrew and St. George, but not not that St. Patrick's cross was the third cross on the Union flag. Well done.

    My Ancestors were Geraldines, the red X most people call the saint patricks cross representing Ireland, ( now Northern Ireland) is actually the FitzGerald / Geraldine/ Desmond family crest. They were cousins to the Twdyrs via Rhys Nest. The Geraldine dynasty is a fascinating bit of research.

    Wow!! What a story.
