As a movie, Conclave is amazing. The acting, the cinematography, the score (oh the score). As a pastor, even though it is pulpy, the theme of church reform and the conversation between what the state of the church is and what it should be is beautiful. It works as a thriller but it also works as a profound piece on what the church should be.

I saw it at 10 a.m. this morning. Absolutely loved it. My favorite movie of the year. I considered making it a double feature and seeing We Live in Time at 12:45, but I was so involved in thinking about Conclave that I didn't want to distract from that. I love mysteries (if only they made as many mysteries as they do horror movies!) and when you throw in the behind-the-curtain political intrigue it's irresistible to me. And what a cast! I'm calling it right here. I predict Ralph Fiennes will win the Oscar for this. Tucci and Isabela Rossellini should at least get nominations.

I think this is so much more than “trashy” or an airplane movie. I think this is a masterclass in acting, directing, writing, editing, and cinematography, and I think coming from a theological standpoint, the way this film tackles the disparity between one’s own faith and the institutions were are supposed to put our faith into is quite profound. Absolutely love this film, one of the masterpieces of the decade for me so far!!

My initial out of the theatre reaction regarding the final twist (no spoilers don't worry) was that it cheapened the whole movie since it just seemed unrealistic, over the top, and out of left field. But after pondering over the movie for a while, I realized that was exactly the purpose of that twist, and that it actually did a great job at highlighting the theme and message of the story. So overall I really loved the movie, and the twist at the end honestly was great after thinking over it a bit and letting it settle.

I loved everyone in this, but especially Rosselini, who barely had any lines but was goving LEGENDARY scowls throughout. It really was a masterclass in "face acting".

I just watched this a little while ago. I grew up Catholic but I'm not religious now. When I was sitting down it was a lot of older people in the audience. They clearly thought this movie was going in a certain direction and then the twist happens. I laughed out loud with surprise. Particularly Ralph's face when he finds out what happened. That and the turtle bit. I also watched Ben Shapiro reacting to it and he blustered on and on about how insulting it is to Catholics and that no traditional values were upheld in the film. Wokeness as crime. It cheered me up after such a tough week.

I get where you’re coming from, but even though it may be based on an actual paperback potboiler commonly sold in airports and read comfortably for many over the course of a flight, the film - as a standalone work - is more of a piece with films like The Fugitive and Raiders of the Lost Ark (neither of which would ever be called “trashy,” even as a compliment), in that it is operating at the highest levels of craft and artistry even as it is obscenely entertaining. It had profound and complex things to say about how - in Nora Gallagher’s words - doubt is the handmaiden to faith, about the difficulty of private grief in a public space, about the challenges of preventing philosophical jockeying from becoming ravenous ambition. Berger is one to watch; as good as All Quiet on the Western Front was, Conclave is better. He feels like a director in the Ron Howard mold, but with more gifts and better instincts.

    • @isuriadireja91

i think they're mad due to their own misunderstanding of the twist...?
      they must've thought the new pope-to-be is a trans....and they'd be wrong.
just like that African boxer, at the last Olympics, identified herself as a female..one sex....this guy also identified himself as a male, also one sex, even though, in both cases...the individual and the character have sexual organs of the opposite sex since they were born.
so, by the end, Ralph & the rest of them still voted for A MALE cardinal, NOT a trans or a female.

The key to all this lies with Ralph Fiennes' speech as Cardinal Laurence in the early going when he outlines the task that lies before him and his fellow cardinals, when he references the sin of 'certainty' to the mystery of faith and doubt. "Certainty" is definitely at play in the last act, explored with somewhat greater clarity than a similar film dealing with theological issues, "Doubt." Fiennes' sorting through surprise disclosures and character motivations recall vestiges of "Perry Mason" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" he being George Smiley investigating "the Circus" of MI-6. Wonderful sober cast, script---sharp dialogue, especially involving Stanley Tucci's Bellini--to the elegant mounting of the enterprise--cinematography, soundtrack and production design overseen by director Edward Berger. Provocative and good for a chortle in equal measure. A cinematic page turner!

I saw this last night and was riveted and thoroughly entertained. After the movie ends, you're left with a great deal to talk about, which is something I've missed lately in movies. The cast was excellent, and Fiennes was, of course, top-notch. The final twist blew me away and made me cry. Yes, there were definitely correlations between this story and today's political climate, which rang true. I did not find this movie trashy at all and quite the opposite: it was deeply artful and serious, steadfast and consistent in tone, quiet and poignant. A must-watch for so many reasons.

There are historical books you can find that talk about the Conclaves and what can happen. Even read a history about the majority of the past popes since St Peter. Some come and go. Others live an interesting life with their mistresses and children (ie: Borgia Pope). It is a variation of history on the Pope and what happens within. In the end, this is just a movie with great actors. Of course, what the ending delivers makes you think that this is "trashy" and does nothing in the end. Literally.

I liked the movie. The 1960s-sounding score was good, but it felt a bit out of place, and the pacing was slower than it might have been. It took me a while to orient myself to the fact this takes place in (roughly) the present day. The ending wasn't so much a surprise, but the twist was. I hear that some are upset with the message of the twist. I felt it was otherwise unnecessary, but whatevs. It reminded me of the early episodes of Borgias with Jeremy Irons in the pope-tastic role. Still, I recommend it.

Even if you don't bother to listen to review, you can tell how they feel about the film from the facial expressions the two hosts have in the picture. Here they both have smiles.

Another overhyped movie, nothing special happened and it was a bore with annoying music...5/10
