What NBA Players and Analysts Said About Steph Curry Before/After the Draft! (Golden State Warriors)

- You can’t always trust what NBA analysts predict before or after the NBA draft. Stephen A. Smith said Deandre Ayton will be a better player than Luka Doncic before the 2019 draft. If you have no idea about that take, watch my previous video on Stephen A. Smith’s predictions on these European players.
Prior to the 2009 draft, Stephen Curry’s name was picking up steam because of the year he did in Davidson College. Everyone wanted to see Steph Curry because of how he shot the ball and how he would go on a tear shooting from deep.
Because Steph was still a rookie and not many NBA teams wanted a 6’3” skinny guard to be their franchise cornerstone.
To get a better understanding of the absurd claims by NBA analysts, I made this video on What these analysts said about Steph Curry before and after the draft. In this video, we will go in-depth on why they said that and what was their statement after Steph proved them wrong.
Let’s set-up the story first by going back to 2009 when Stephen Curry was working out with teams prior to the NBA draft.
This first one is not an analyst, but LeBron James. One day he decided to text Steph saying, He did show up and had only praises for Steph.
On a first-half play, when the shot clock was winding down. Steph hit a long three-pointer and pointed to Lebron.
After the game, Steph appreciated his reactions and said, “it was cool to watch someone like him cheering for our team.”
Fast forward a few years, and LeBron had a courtside view of how good Steph was after they played in 4 straight finals where Curry’s Warriors won 3 titles.
Now, this next one I didn’t get the name of the analyst, but he asked Monta Ellis (former Warriors star) on media day
I know the analyst only wanted a story, but it made the situation awkward because Ellis didn’t agree with how the Warriors were going about as a franchise. He knew that his future with the team was in jeopardy. It took some time for Ellis to warm up to Steph - his wife asked him to apologize - and eventually they played the season together.
The following season Ellis was traded (I guess his hunch was right all along) to the Milwaukee Bucks for Andrew Bogut, Steven Jackson, and a first-round draft pick. Can you imagine if the Warriors stayed with Ellis and Steph Curry? They wouldn’t have had the chance of getting that pick which turned out to be Klay Thompson.
Kenny Smith had this to say about Steph before the draft.
Now Steph has 1 more championship than him, two MVPs, and is considered to be the greatest shooter of all-time. That is why we should never judge someone by his looks alone.
Before the boom of Twitter, this next analyst was already sharing his thoughts on the platform. He’s considered to be the number 1 hater of LeBron James, Skip Bayless. But this series of tweets weren’t a diss on Steph Curry, rather, a praise on him.
“LOVE Steph Curry."
“If I’m the Warriors I do NOT trade Steph Curry. Thanks to the Thunder, Kings, and Timberfools, a steal for Don Nelson’s system.”
Yes, you read that right TIMBERFOOLS.
Skip Bayless was still with ESPN at this time debating with Stephen A. Smith.
Doug Gottlieb was still working with ESPN in 2009 when he tweeted out this:
Now Doug made a 360-degree turn on the Dan Patrick Show after the Warriors won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018.
“That's a big boy range though, right there where you hit it. That’s past the NBA three by a good 5 to 7 feet right?” Asked by Dan Patrick.
“It's great though when people tell me, it takes a while to load up and then you process, wait this is Stephen Curry on transition or off a cross-over ready to shoot anytime. It’s just ridiculous what he has done. He’s a transcended player.
He changed the way we view shooting, what’s a good shot, what’s a bad shot. Steph has changed basketball in terms of how we view jump shooting, range.
Obviously, I was wrong on all those takes. I thought he was going to be a great role-player, coming off the bench as a sixth man, just to be a good player, not a great player. We now show up to Warriors games to watch him warm-up to watch him work out.
Players now want to do what Steph is doing in terms of ball-handling, passing. He has made an average kid dream of playing in the NBA.”
What are your thoughts on these analysts’ comments about Steph Curry back then? Do you think Curry will go down as one of the best to have ever played? Tell us what you think in the comments down below.
If you haven’t watched my other video where I discuss what NBA players are actually saying about Steph Curry, be sure to check that out! I’m sure you’ll like that one!

The only small player today that gets doubled or tripled most of the time
Even then, he can hit the shot
💯
Once he crosses the half-court line, opposing players will start to swarm around him.
I also almost can't believe I'll see a sub-6'3" player being doubled/tripled in my lifetime. I mean we're used to see LeBron, Kobe, etc... being doubled or tripled but an undersized point guard being played like that is just ridiculous!
Trae Young and Dame smh pls watch more games
If they are going to introduce a 4-point line in the NBA, it is going to be called a "Steph Curry" line.

Steph changed the NBA landscape. Before his explosion began, the game was leaning towards either big players, tall athletic wings, or athletic PGs. Steph defied all that. And so, players started adjusting to copy his style. But no even comes close to volume and efficiency that he has.
He made the whole game change
Trae Young is the prodigy child of Steph. Young probably wouldn't have had a shot if it weren't for Steph.
Steph has been the most revolutionary player since Wilt. Ironically, both Warriors.
Also Steph forced the Coach to use box and one defense on NBA which common used on Amateur basketball
Steph may not be the greatest player of all time, but I think he has had the greatest impact on how the game is now scouted, coached and played. And...it is a joy to watch him play the game.
Do you define athletic as driving abilities? Because saying Steph is not athletic is crazy when he has one of the best handles
He is the only player in NBA that force opponent teams to guard him 40 feet from the basket. FEAR or RESPECT they have to do it.
Yep you got it
Big facts !
... whether he has the ball or not. simply awesome.
The way the defense has to adjust against him makes all of his teammates so much better too.
SC is the most doubled or trippled team among guards of all time in NBA history

Not true definitely was AI
I think Steph (and the Warriors) transcended the way the rest of the NBA worked during the off season. Everyone is working harder on shooting and conditioning. The NBA used to be unbearable to watch for the first 6-8 weeks until players got in shape, bricks being thrown at the rim. He made the whole league better.
He changed the game
stephen curry has had a bigger impact on the game of basketball then lebron. Steph showed the value of the three and how a team lead by a jump shooting can win against anyone. He changed the way the game is played not just against him but he showed a whole new path to win championship's. Lebron showed that once in a generation athleticism and a legendary work ethic will win you championships.

Curry created that reality.
Right. Aside from being the greatest shooter of all time, his ball handling, foot work, moving through the play without the ball and understanding of space is above ordinary. Aside from shooting, everything he does happens in slow motion but you really can't stop it. He's everything you want in a 1 guard
You mean it's not about tattoos, hairstyles, spectacle and playing for the Lakers??

This is why we need analysts who have been in the game. A lot of football analysts have been coaches and/or players. Why don’t they hold the same standard for basketball and other sports? Tired of seeing Stephen A Smith and Max debate over a player when it’s clear they have no clue what they’re taking about.
Even then sometimes they’re not the best
One metric I’ve always thought was good for determining if a player is great is “can you tell the story of their sport without mentioning them?”. Steph has changed basketball forever. Already top 10 all time in my book.
The man still can’t get no respect! He’s being shut out of top players conversations because he makes analysts look and sound stupid. No matter how many times he proves everyone wrong he can’t get no respect.
i know right? the man is playing his heart out right now
Analysts just mad Curry single handedly changed the entire game from high school to overseas. It's not the same game they remember. As for fans they just hate LeBron and Curry because those two dominated their respective divisions for better part of a decade. Hard not to be mad when the same guys are beating your team over and over and over again. You can not like them I get it. But to not respect their games is another level of stupidity I cannot fathom. Been a warriors fan since RUN TMC days and see warriors fans hating on LeBron a lot. Whatever to them I see Lebrons greatness. Just saddens me so many don't see Curry's greatness out of spite.

@@Portrial I wonder who he trains with during the off season. That person or persons he works with has a good eye for continuing to help Steph improve year by year.
Curry is already a top 10 to ever play the game for me - that's starting from the mid 90s. What is very much missed about Curry that other (aspiring) shooters don't seem to realize is his handles are top tier in the league. He's still a step behind Kyrie Irving, but even if Steph is less flashy the way he persists and maintains his dribble to keep moving around and between defenders to eventually find a clearing is incomparable. Oh, and that he can shoot off his own dribble. Not coincidentally, this is also why Kevin Durant is also so transcendent. Yes, Kevin Durant is long and just rises up and shoots over defenders quickly enough, but KD also maintains a amazing handle for his length and is not stuck in a bad spot to take a shot. He gets to where he wants to and makes the attempt from there. Where Steph Curry has a super quick release that doesn't give you time to contest, KD just rises above a contest.
There are other snipers in the league who when left open may be comparable to Steph in accuracy in catch-and-shoot, but none of those guys have handles. Not one is close. You see any of them dribbling the ball through too much traffic at the perimeter, and you know they're going to lose it because that's where you can risk reaching knowing there is likely help if you get blown by. Steph is one guy you know is keeping the ball, and is just as capable of blowing by and finishing at the rim.
Curry is one of the best ever
Irving is overrated change my mind
@@c4thenerd171 agreed kyrie's handling is flashy and a lot of unnecessary movement much like hardens and are highlighted on iso play almost choreographed. Curry's handling is more spontanious and the only player that i've seen break ankles without the ball in his hands.
Well said
Agree on all!! But if we’re talking about where Steph is just stellar, we HAVE to at least mention his passing!! In spite of his own shooting ability, he’s just as likely to deliver an amazing pass- unexpected, and right in the right place for the shooter! He’s like a gifted quarterback who can deliver right in the right spot, and right on time!
Imagine getting a text from LeBron saying, “Hey good luck tonight. I’m gonna try to make it to your game.” I don’t care what your opinions are on him you would freak out.
That would be wild
I was never a LeBron fan, especially because I live in SF, but he has a soul, too, an enviable one. Very fortunate to live in the time of James and Curry.
Stephen Curry is the greatest point guard of all time.
He’s def up there
Yes and no. He is the greatest SHOOTING pg, but he has some stiff competition in the PG stakes. Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson and John Stockton in particular are probably the 3 you can argue were `better` pgs. When i look at everything, Oscar always stands out so strongly. He averaged 25 ppg as a guard in an era where there were no 3 point scores, 7.5 rebounds and nearly 10 assists. He was beyond special as a scorer, defender and floor general. I suspect that in todays game, Oscar would be every bit as good as he was then, conversely in that era Steph would have been physically out of his depth and averaged maybe 15 or so.
@@dyrtybarstud5261 curry still better
@@FMGGLITT09 Better shooter yes, better floor general or all round player, straight no. People get hung up on just how good a shooter he is but thats not ALL a point guard is. He would have been out muscled and beaten up in Oscars era, and conversely if Oscar had the room and spacing that the modern game has, likely he would have averaged well over 30 ppg. Basically Oscar was the best parts of Magic, Stockton and Curry all rolled into 1.
Dyrty Barstud He’s second all time behind magic
Stephan's eye hand coordination is beyond phenomenal, so yes Stephan has changed the game and 7 footers aren't absolutely essential anymore. It's weird because I grew up watching some of the greatest big men in the 90s: D. Robinson, P. Ewing, S. O'Neal, D. Mutumbo, Hakeem, etc.
It’s incredible
7 footers are now actually a handicap. They are too slow to keep on the floor for the modern game. Size does matter, but the player still has to be quick enough to guard smaller players.
The Greatest shooter of all time to this date which probably can never be replicated or outdone. Name's etched in NBA history among the upper echelon of all time greats.
He’s one of the greats
Steph just made a title of his own
The "GSOAT" (GREATEST SHOOTER OF ALL TIME)
He did honestly
In fairness to the effort of some analysts, none of them understood the plans that Jerry West had to assemble a team around Steph. JW was the architect of trading Montae and getting injured bigman Bogut and allowing Steph to grow into the role. They even got rid of Mark Jackson and hired a rookie coach with a system in mind that the league was not prepared to defend. All this because they drafted players to fit their system and not just draft talent and let that take the team as far as he can. Steph will be a HOFer and one that has changed the way the game is played from the guard position. Let’s just enjoy the ride and like MJ, will all be history when he is done.
He will for sure end up in the HOF
It's one thing to see Curry play. But being a Warriors fan my whole life it was unbelievable. To see every game the greatest shooter of all time played is something special.
Love watching his highlights
Steph Curry has completely changed the paradigm of how to attack the basket. All players of the past had the fixed mentality of getting as close to the basket as possible in order to increase the odds of getting the ball in. But getting close to the basket also means you are running into a denser pack of defenders - more risk of getting blocked or stolen or shoved down. Instead Curry did 2 things totally different.
He made everyone realize that there is a whole lot more OPEN COURT AWAY from the basket. More court space means more open shots, less chance of being blocked or shoved aside. But then Curry also made sure that he developed the long distance shooting skills to take advantage of all that open real estate. He profoundly realized and perfected the absolute necessity of the shooting skills in order to be the most effective and deadly at the more open but distant spaces.
Voila'! A new way of playing basketball!!! THAT is why Curry is truly a generational and transformational player.
Think of LeBron's or Shaq's dunking. Highly effective. But you gotta be hugely tall and muscular. Think of Michael Jordan's sailing through the air from the foul line and ramming the ball in. Beautiful to watch. But you gotta be really athletic and tall. Think of Kareem's sky hook. Elegant, unstoppable. But you gotta be REALLY tall and strong or you are gonna get blocked or pushed out of range.
Those players all had their unique weapons, but us average height and normally muscled people simply can not do any of those things. That is why Curry has inspired so many NORMAL kids to develop their 3-point shot. They can not dunk. They can not sky hook. Most of them will never achieve Curry's level of skill and success, but, hey, they can still try.
Changed the game
If I can't go through them there's always space behind me.
Trae Young is a direct product of Curry's impact on the game.

When you lead a school like davidson college to the sweet 16 you're special.
Definitely
Steph is a one in a generation player. The analysts were not wrong with their data driven approach. But there are always exception to the data, outliers. And Steph is THE outlier. It took an exceptionally well run organization of the Warriors to allow Steph to become the Steph Curry we know today. Again, the analysts weren't necessarily wrong about the data, and Curry was indeed very injury prone due to his size and strength. But all the stars aligned, with a great coach, great GM, great team owner, great teammates like Klay and Draymond and then add KD, that's how Steph became a three-time champ. We will never know how Steph would have turned out if he landed on a different team in 2009. But it doesn't matter, even Steph would tell you himself that he works as hard as he could to get better everyday, but the rest just have to let it happen.
Agreed. The cards just fell in currys favor luckily
He wasn’t injury prone due to his size and weight, he just had an unlucky run rolling his ankles, something any player “injury prone” or not can do at any time on the court.

Nobody remembers that Steph had ankle injury problems during his first season or two with the Warriors. Back then it wasn’t really clear that Curry would overcome these as they seemed to be chronic. When they traded away Monte Ellis a lot of fans were upset. Even more so because they got an injured Andrew Bogut, who was the centerpiece of that trade. The Warriors, to me at least, were were building the team around Bogut. Jackson was also was a pretty decent player for the Warriors. It probably wasn’t until Steph’s 3rd or maybe 4th season that it was clear the Warriors were pushing all the right buttons and had a special player in Steph Curry. At least, that’s my memory of the Warriors. I’ve been a fan of GSW since the days when George Karl was their head coach.

Been a GSW fan since the 70's, I enjoyed watching the Magic and Bird years, watch Shaq dominate, didn't really pay attention to Jordan, other than everybody wanted to wear his shoes, Lebron is ok, but Steph Curry has to be the most exciting player in the entire NBA, think of the greats that came and left, Dr. J., Hakeem, Kobe, and countless others, Steph passes them all on the excitement list.....no one is even close....gonna miss him when he retires.
Yea he’s super fun to watch. Hopefully retirement is far away
He is chosen and was destined for greatness. I keep saying, many are capable of learning a sports, but greatness is a gift from God.
When its all said and done, with all the rings, accolades, and personal stats. Wardell Stephen Curry will be top 10 ALL TIME. If someone asks you to make a team of 5 V 5 using all players ever played in NBA, Curry will more likely than not round out the PG/SG of that team? Whos better?
Curry best shooter ever. He’s def gonna be up there
Doug Gottlieb made a "360 degree turn"? Brilliant analysis! LMAO!!
the warriors hiring of steve kerr(2014-15) started a revolution in nba forever that of shooting 3s as main offensive weapon. .before him coaches all over nba including phil jackson relegated 3s as secondary weapon. .players who shoot 3s were frowned upon. .now coaches are training and encourage their players to do 3s. .steph curry and klay were lucky to have kerr in 2015. . their 3-point shooting potential were developed and raised skyhigh including the rest of the warriors. .it looks so easy for them to win championships except for injuries in 2019. .to be on the championship five times in a row is no ordinary feat. . . .and after three years of juggling, recovery and preparation the warriors are out rolling once again. .
Yes of course, those analysts are always wrong, their Monday morning quarterbacks,i cant listen to most of them,Stef is a one and only, and without a doubt the best shooter of all time.also maybe best ball handler.
Best shooter ever no cap
I’d take AI’s handles over his but his shot is second to none.
@@scootsmcdoots80 agreed. AI had the smoothest handles
The fact that Stephen Curry is the most double/triple teamed player in the history of the game speaks volumes. Proving people wrong is such a great feeling
I’m sure he loves proving people wrong lol
The best compliment curry got was if i remember correctly from Dr J, he said they made a curry simulator to see how curry does all his shooting and the sim couldnt get it done, couldnt get at curry's stats, now thats a legend in the making.
He’s already a legend
The mark price comparison is actually a good one.
Still cant believe Skip was right this whole time
I know right? For once he got it right lol
He didn't have an immediate impact but Skip was right ( wait did I say that out loud )
He is a great player and difficult to stop. You can't know what he will do on the dribble.
Yea that’s what makes him so hard to guard
Stephen A Smith is one of the most delusional analysts ever
He just yells everything lol
You can’t call him delusional cause as a warrior fan myself no one expected curry to be who he is today
@@KG-jw4jg If Curry never existed, Smith would still give us infinite examples of his delusion. Swish had it right, he's a made-for-tv analyst, and TV will choose volume over accuracy every time.
You show them Stephen! You go man !
Steph >>
Steph pointed at bron thinking I'm coming 4 you
And he did
Don't judge the book by it's cover that's stephen curry
100% true
Curry is such an underrated athlete lol
He’s just too good
He changed the game so I’m sure he will go in the NBA history as one of the best to have ever played the game.
His ball handling and crossover kinda of reminds of AI’s game. And Allen agrees that Steph is one of the best.
He def changed the game forever
Kenny Smith wasn’t even a super star in the league. Come on man! Great breakdown. Keep up the great work.
Thanks! Appreciate it
If someone is an "analyst" but does not use any measurable parameters to defend their statement, we can easily undetstand that person is using their emotions
Yes very true
Steph is playing at the level of MJ on different skill set.
Both amazing players
I had to look up the story about that 0 points vs. Loyola of Maryland. What a story. The Warriors should try that strategy this season: Curry tying up 2 defenders near halfcourt, and just have Draymond Green run a 4 on 3 half-court set. I mean, they already do that on individual plays.
Lol hope they read this comment
Wow they really got a lot wrong about Curry lol. Awesome vid btw :) 👌🏽
Yeah they def didn’t see him comin. Thanks!
Not one of the best, THE BEST , G O A T
💯💯
01:27 man i really love that 0 point game against Loyola, dude just stayed in the corner for the entire game and they still kept double teaming him, Davidson was literally playing 4v3 lol
Haha the curry effect
I often laugh at the analysts: I remember their take on Russell Wilson, and the Seahawks heading into the Super Bowl 48. Then they are sooooooo humble afterwards when they are proven wrong. But, still make often ridiculous claims afterwards.
Lol exactly
Basketball Sports is not all about being strong and athletic you need to be mentally prepared and high basketball IQ why steph curry scoring more points than LeBron since this guys are stronger taller and defenitely athletic than steph, steph curry works hard to become the lethal shooter and ability to read the flow of the offense a decisions when to take the shot in a good look (high percentage) and not forcing the shot using your strength. This is the reason why he is so special.
Well said. Curry does work hard and has a high basketball IQ
Listen up you morons, being taller and stronger has nothing to do with being more athletic. Previous two are physical attributes only.
It was emphasize the weaknesses and strength of compared players that's the reason there is good basketball players and more effective players, both of them have weaknesses James had built and physicality his good on creating shots using his strength steph used the routine of the team and movement. He keeps moving without the basketball and most of his shot is uncontested by creating space. That's why people called him the freak of nature.
Being tall and athletic had a big advantage on the game of basketball set an example to you LeBron James vs the seven dwarfts who do u think will win Cinderella
I wondered what would happened if shaq and curry were born in the same era in the same team.
I wonder who will the opposite team double.
Tbh that would be very confusing lol
2019
under estimated by big colleges and some NBA analyst...and what SC did? He just changed the format of the game. Best shooter I have ever seen.
One of the best players ever
i totally give my utmost admiration
Missing.
1 ESPN analyst on One on One segment who criticized $4 million for 4 year extension to Curry is a horrible contract before 2014 season.
2. Charles Barkley. Summer of 2014 after announcement of hiring Steve Kerr: I do not like jump shooting teams. At end of 2014-15, Warriors win the title!
Gotta love chuck haha
People need to stop fronting like they always knew he was gonna be who he is today !!!
Lol facts
You see the thing is Curry is a force, you have to play up on him, teams on defense have to work to prevent curry take, he can blow past you, call a screen to either blow past for an ez layup, or a spot up 3. Most defenders will help out, but the thing is, the Warriors have all amazing shooters, so if the defense help on D, some one will likely be open, if not Curry gets an ez bucket. This will be a hard reason on why the Warriors execute so well!
Warriors are so smooth
Well, you know what happened when you assumed! The Golden Warrior is my kind of player because he's different and most definitely has changed the game on and off the court.
He’s changed it for sure
Sir Buckets! Greatest shooter in this decade. Change the way to shooting the ball 🏀. Fast release, confident will to win. Analysts at times don’t get it right. One in a lifetime player. His range is beyond, a HOF player when all said and done.
Greatest shooter ever *
Ellis and Thompson actually played together in 2011 so the details of that trade are incorrect. Right after Ellis was traded Klay had a 40 point game
💯💯
Best pure shooter ever. Great video.
Thanks!!
What a awesome video they'll feel like idiots now Steph in his 6 NBA finals but when are they ever right 🤷♀️
Let's Go Warriors
Steph and Klay are two of my all time favorite players. That dude said it best, he makes the average skinny kid have a shot at being great.
Can’t wait til they play together again
Great video. Only thing I'd suggest... use 180 degree turn and not 360 degree turn when talking about someone changing their opinion. 180 degrees is facing the opposite way; 360 degrees means you turn around and come right back to where you started...
Yes I know. I caught that afterwards lol
I didn’t hear anything for 15 seconds after that statement while I wondered if I heard that right. 180 was intended I assume.
One of the best ever, without a doubt.
I loved Dell Curry (Steph's dad) when he was with the Hornets. However, I said exactly the same thing about Steph Curry before the draft, too. Curry IS skinny and small. He's just good enough to overcome. It's rare.
To answer that last question, he already is one of the best to have ever played. Period.
Facts. Period.
He is one of the greatest players I have followed during the past 5 years!

Thanks!
Monte Elis wasn’t taking shots at Steph he just knew that there skill sets were too different. all love though great vid
Thanks for watching!
