Posole 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋yeah! With homemade corn tortillas? Or pan blanco! 😊 By the look on Lorraine’s face, there had better be a plan made for a tool shed by the green house. Or inside the green house?
My mom had a small stall of their barn as a playhouse when she was a child. She would take pages from the Sears catalog and use them as wallpaper. She was born in 1935. That barn is still standing. We went back about thirty years ago and her “wallpaper” was still there. It’s a family farm still in our family in Kentucky.
The pieces of metal you found with the ads on them are called plates. They are used on large printing presses known as Web presses for printing newspapers and such. My dad used to bring them home from the newspaper plant for me from time to time when I was a teen and I used them to patch rust holes on cars I was working on.
Our neighbor helped tear down an old dusty shed a few years ago & he almost lost his life to lung issues. Several years of hospital stays & weakness. He is often cautioning us to be careful with our lungs & don't take them for granted. Just want you guys safe & healthy.:)
I can think of all kinds of things to do with that building, a processing center for after the beast have been dispatched. Preserving garden harvests. A studio for arts and crafts. A place to raise your chicken starting with an incubator, just to name a few
That newspaper tin is how they use to print the paper. I covered the inside of a shop on wall with them 40 years ago when I worked at a local machine shop.
So great that you all repurpose a lot of buildings. Old does not necessarily have to be destroyed... From Southeast Colorado - the High Plains. Love old barns, windmills and the sagebrush sea!!!
What a tresure you have in that old barn. So many uses for it. Garden shed, poultry house/pens, furrowing stalls for the kune kune etc. And looks like it has some concrete floors! Find you someone who has a sawmill and get rough lumber to fix it up with. Just so much waiting to be put back in shape.
You can make your own gutter by making a straight cut down pvc pipe and fitting it so steel roof sits inside pipe then use metal strap to hold it. If you find that pvc is cheaper than gutters.
I love watching transformations like cleaning out an old barn and turning it into a usable space. I hate to see old buildings like that deteriorate to the point of needing to be torn down.
The hay will make a good winter bedding in the green house with the chickens scratching and pooping on it. 🐓 💩 Saw YT homesteader experiment with straw and hay at different stages of decomposition. The more decomposed the straw or hay, the better for the garden. Add that with your chickens holy squat, and you will have beautiful soil to work with in the spring. An airbnb (for your guests during workshops) -smart idea.
Hey Gang 👋 Jason, YOU are the ALPHA HOMESTEADERS, but Lorain keeps you going with her great cooking, she should do her own cooking podcasts on canning and coking (like I suggested on the 3 musketeers) God's Good Blessings to you and your beautiful family keep up the great work love U guys XOXOXO stay safe and healthy
1985! My birth year! 🌻Bought canning jars from an estate sale. It was the deceased mother’s and they were stored in old cardboard boxes. Opened then a month later to clean and found old newspaper in the boxes dated 1973. It was wild to see the prices of things at that time. I think a dozen eggs was $.30-$.40 and milk was $.89 a gallon.
You must feel a great sense of accomplishment finally cleaning the old barn out after all the work you put into getting access to it. Great work guys. Sometime progress comes slow, but as long as there is progress, your doing it right.
Excellent work! I remember when we bought our 1850 property in Michigan back in 2014 we found 5 separate dump sites. One was old bottles, dishes and cans. Another was appliances, books, household items and still others with farm equipment, metal scraps and more. We rented a huge dumpster and filled it up with what we found on the property. The front of the property was immaculate but not so much the back 3 acres. It felt like a weight off of my shoulders when we cleaned it up and was so happy with the new space. That barn of yours is going to be more beautiful than it already is once it's all cleaned.
Great job getting the barn cleared out! It looks to be in good shape. Maybe instead of tearing out the panels where the kennels are to get to the dog houses you might be able to just go in with a saw and cut the dog houses down smaller to get them out. Having those sections enclosed might come in handy later. Maybe think about leaving them intact until you decide what you'll do with the spaces. Those could be good areas for brooders etc.
it looks like you need to build some swales throughout the property to control the storm water . maybe a retention pond for the live stock .. good video
It's 4am here in Northern Ireland, Storm Isha has just blown through and woke me up so while my 5 cats have pinned my legs I watched this (if it was April I'd be outside, January 4am is pretty dark) I don't have a barn sadly but I do have an Irish Stone Cottage and it has a couple rooms I haven't been in yet. There's some old potato boxes, a turf wheelbarrow, and other things of varying description. After seeing this I'm keen to get one of the rooms cleaned out!
I wish we had an old barn on our place. We do have a good sized metal outbuilding but nothing with any real character. We bought this 10 acre property a year ago and are making it our own. The house was built 18 years ago so there isn’t too much we need to do, but we are finding problems that we need to take care of as everyone does.
1985, I guessed the date right! that's a really cool aluminum sign with groceries on it. I agree, any building on a property is a good thing, even when it's beat up and needs work. With the prices of lumber, metal and everything else right now, it's a huge bonus.
I guessed 1985 right before you said it, when you said 1985 I actually gasped, lol.😊 I would take a piece of that tin ad and put a picture frame around it made from old barn wood. I love old stuff like that, I have a news paper ad I found at my Great Aunt's house in an old newspaper from 1934 with a coupon for 5 white castle hamburgers for 10 cents.
Another great project that you guys are tackling. As you were pitching hay into the high tunnel, something small and red dropped out of the back of the truck; a small knife? screwdriver? Hopefully nothing that will hurt the chickens. Can't wait to see how you use this barn!
Old hay for garden mulch or compost pile, animal bedding, but not animal food, or maybe to start building beds in the new high tunnel????? Great job! I never could understand people who just leave trash laying around. God bless y'all and keep growing.
Make a burn pile about100 feet out. Old trash, vines, plastics, clothing rat poop, small wood hunks, rake ground, in stalls and each as you go. take in long wood for out side patching.
When I saw those hardened concrete bags, all I could think of was erosion control. Placed just above the "sink hole" you always talk about it would slow down the run off water so that things did not get worse. My guess is that what you have is a ravine in the hill going down to the creek area. Rock, stone, or dried concrete are great for breaking up the fastest water that does the most damage. Or put it in the bottom to let the water land on it like a gutter splash block does to keep it from digging deeper. Lots of uses for such things when you have a water problem. Just a thought.
Wow, I had no idea that barn was in as good of shape as it turned out to be! What a fantastic outbuilding to have. You all did a great job clearing it out.
I cringed every time you moved something in a corner. It made it shiver! Your soup looked very yummy. I can't pronounce it, but I do like the hominy part of it! Lorraine is an excellent cook. I know it warmed every up after a cold hard day of working outside.
I think JASON you’re gonna have to make another lean barn over there by the greenhouse for the tools and wheelbarrows and things like that something small 12 x 12 or something
I didn’t even know you had another barn! Yet I watch every video! Now I feel I need to check myself. Before my only concern was that Lorraine and her dad is not as involved
CAUTION: Jason, I am concerned that the hay/straw you got out of that old barn may have been treated with herbicide or even sprayed. If so, you don't want that anywhere near your greenhouse. We enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing.
You should protect yourself with masks. The last time I cleaned out an old barn I ended up with pneumonia for 3 months. IT was awful.
I agree. I’m struggling with an old
House right now myself.
💯%

thanks for the info! nice!
Very interesting!

That dust is very toxic , but recent history shows us that a large number of people would rather die than to wear a simple mask
I think these old, rough sawn lumber barns, are beautiful. And their mystique, it’s out of this world epic.
I can think of all kinds of things to do with that building, a processing center for after the beast have been dispatched. Preserving garden harvests. A studio for arts and crafts. A place to raise your chicken starting with an incubator, just to name a few
This video was so much fun to watch. I love old barns and can't wait to see how y'all utilize this one.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That newspaper tin is how they use to print the paper. I covered the inside of a shop on wall with them 40 years ago when I worked at a local machine shop.
After you clean that barn you should go through it with a metal detector, you know how those old-timers didn't trust banks 🤞😄
So great that you all repurpose a lot of buildings. Old does not necessarily have to be destroyed...

Accomodation, fireplace, bar, pool table, darts, sports on the telly, pizza oven, poker table. Living the dream!
I love watching transformations like cleaning out an old barn and turning it into a usable space. I hate to see old buildings like that deteriorate to the point of needing to be torn down.
You guys are such hard workers and keep your property looking good 👍. I don’t ever miss an episode ❤

I always look forward to your videos! You're one of the better homesteading channels!
Wow, that old barn was interesting. Big job done. You guys rock. You have lots of good space to use. 💞✌️💞
Thanks 👍
That old hay/straw is a perfect start to a huge compost pile!!! Please Loranne give me your pozole recipe!!
I'm always concerned about the dust that you guys are inhaling.

What a blessing to have barns with good old bones.
The BEST thing after cold day in the field is HOT stew ❤❤❤

A woodshop is a great idea. The soup at the end looked good!

Great progress & a fantastic family! Thanks for sharing! Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
Can’t wait to see what you do with the barn. Supper looks good. God bless.
Great video all the family working together 🇬🇧
Day by day things get done ✅ and better. Thank you for sharing your day!
🇦🇺You could make a grow out pen for chickens. Concrete floor, wire mesh for sides and roof to keep out rodents and other predators.
Doodads were like caplet size and shape cheezits. They were great in chex mix. Yummy! I guessed the 80s for that sign. I remember those days.
Great accomplishment to clear the junk❗️

Love Homesteading with the Zimmerman's!
Yummy 😋. I love pozole on a cold (or warm) day. Just a great comfort food all around. The barn is looking great.👍
Fabulous project underway and delicious looking dinner. I love your channel. 😁❤️🌹
Thanks so much! 😊
We did a lot of clean up like this on our ranch. I'm glad I was just watching, I'm tired.
One mans trash
Is another mans treasure.
99.9% of the time 1 mans trash is another mans trash also, its just a matter of is the other man a pack rat
You can put the hardened concrete in your sinkhole as filler!!!
Old hay for garden mulch or compost pile, animal bedding, but not animal food, or maybe to start building beds in the new high tunnel????? Great job! I never could understand people who just leave trash laying around. God bless y'all and keep growing.
1985. Those were the good old days now.
Cleaning is a good thing!
As you fix things up, remember to get in touch with your insurance agent❤
Oh the opportunities in that barn. It would be cool to make an office or just a hang out space upstairs. Teach your classes downstairs.
Make a burn pile about100 feet out. Old trash, vines, plastics, clothing rat poop, small wood hunks, rake ground, in stalls and each as you go. take in long wood for out side patching.
You have a lot of useful out houses. That’ll be helpful. I’m surprised Randy is not there. Hope Lorraine’s parents are doing well.
Well that’s a lot of work you guys have done. Great job.. the food looks tasty too.
Great video! Just get it done! Love seeing all the things you find. Many Blessings to you and your family!
Garden mulch tree mulch for old hay/straw😊
Endless possibilities for that barn. 😊 compost the hay.
Too funny - finding a
Scarecrow 🤣
From dog house to Pig pen? a perfect place for keeping pregnant sows and piglets safe. the upstairs can store the pig food too.

Takes me back to when we first moved to our little farm, hard but satisfying work for sure.
Wow, I had no idea that barn was in as good of shape as it turned out to be! What a fantastic outbuilding to have. You all did a great job clearing it out.
Thank you for sharing 🌲
Love Gooder!❤
You have a lovely family Jason.
One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Love the family endeavor you are very blessed Jason
Jason, you could build a tool shed near the garden
Goo job thank you all
I love old barns!!😅
I cringed every time you moved something in a corner. It made it shiver! Your soup looked very yummy. I can't pronounce it, but I do like the hominy part of it! Lorraine is an excellent cook. I know it warmed every up after a cold hard day of working outside.
Be a nice shed for your sheep or goats if you're getting some. It would give them shelter and somewhere for them to have their babies.
I love seeing the family, house is looking good.
❤Yum! I like mine with shredded cabbage, radishes, limes & tortillas.
Yall should do recipes when u make something you like. Homestead recipes u know..
Look forward to see how you use that barn. Blessings.
That poop and the straw can both be used I. The new hightunnel!!! Gold mine
That tin ad, use for rat holes, around bottom. Dig down and stuff in tin around. Rotted boards, and gaps. I agree take out most of the dog house, mesh
I love that old barn. It looks like a good chicken coop or pig home.
Going through trash and stuff like that when I was growing junking jucking.
awesome thanks
Barns - big equipment, animals, feed and hay
I think JASON you’re gonna have to make another lean barn over there by the greenhouse for the tools and wheelbarrows and things like that something small 12 x 12 or something
I see a she shed build in Jason's near future👀🤣🙃🙂😆👍
That “hay” looks like the start of a nice compost pile.
Looking good
Yes.
I bet it feels real good getting phase 1 cleaning of it done. Phase two cleaning, won't be as bad. Goal: by Thanksgiving make that your barn.
I didn’t even know you had another barn! Yet I watch every video! Now I feel I need to check myself. Before my only concern was that Lorraine and her dad is not as involved
That metal with the grocery store ad looks to have been a printing plate.
CAUTION: Jason, I am concerned that the hay/straw you got out of that old barn may have been treated with herbicide or even sprayed. If so, you don't want that anywhere near your greenhouse.
We enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing.
yes, good point
Chickens and goats would be a quick conversion for that barn
You need a good spot to store that new tractor that you're getting in😁😁😁
You got that right!
Great job my friend 😎 what a great space! Congratulations 👏
Thanks so much!
You could use the hay as bedding for the pigs. Nancy from Nebraska
I think that barn would be great for sheep or goats..❤
I agree 😁
