      I wonder, why does Stockfish say 4.8 on the previous move? It doesn't seem like that long a sequence leading to checkmate... Does Stockfish give up analyzing lines after the rook sacrifice because it looks silly? Or how does he not see it?

      @@newpgaston6891 It calculates a few moves ahead, in the beginning it didn't calculate all the way to mate, but when given enough time the eval goes from material will be lost to I don't quite see mate, but the game is lost to oh it's a mate in 15.

      Yep. All those high level moves aren't so much motivating as they are deluding. But the same is true for super GMs watching an engine that's rated a thousand points higher all the while believing they'll just casually fold that kind of play into their game. Nope. If only desire truly had the capacity to run roughshod over reality.

    Please, do more of this "suppressing Stockfish's eval" thing. It's so difficult to see how hard to find are moves when you know that it's +2 and that there is a winning move somewhere, compared to the live situation players are in...

    I love that Stockfish doesn't even see it's forced mate in 12 at like 25 depth... Until you let it run even deeper, and around ~38 depth on lichess it finally saw the forced mate after Rxh2. During the analysis it kept fluctuating from +6 to -70 constantly too, it's so funny seeing the engine having an aneurysm from a single move.

      There used to be brilliancy prizes at tournaments, but that doesn't happen anymore. I guess that the reasons could be that a brilliancy is dependent on the taste of the jurors, up for bribery or a game full of computer preparation could win

      They have "Fight of the night" in the UFC, and it doesn't necessarily go to the best fighter but to the most entertaining/impressive match. Could definitely be implemented well into chess :)

    Shakh is such a beast. He plays a fearless style, going for complications and initiative at every chance. He's been my favorite player for years. I'm thrilled to see him playing so well! To have two career-defining brilliancies in one tournament is LEGENDARY STUFF!

    I know how the pieces move, and played on occasion through my life. I love watching the breakdowns and instruction Levy gives though I know in my mid 50's I'll never get great. But this video is just mind blowing to me, it reminds me of watching a skilled magician perform their illusions. And Levy's commentary comes across as informative to show you the brilliance rather than spoiling the magic. Thank you for this!

    Man, Shak really is my absolute favourite player. Even though he slipped a little bit below the level he was 4 years ago his late rise is still inspirational and he plays the most entertaining chess at top level. His games against Rapport were the biggest reason to watch super tournaments the last few years.

      There was an article a couple weeks ago during another tournament that said something to the effect of: mamedyarov is clearly out of shape and is just a punching bag at the moment.
      Mamedyarov: and I took that personally.

      He might do very well, but the kind of crazy attack he plays in this game wouldn't work in classical. Ultimately, Richard Rapport did a mistake that he wouldn't have made with more time. That doesn't take anything away from Mamedyarov. It's amazing how much he managed to read with so little time. But it's not clear how that will transfer the candidates.

    9:50 that jump from -4 to -30 is the most hilarious thing I have seen. Engines generally doesn’t grant point on good moves but takes points on bad moves . Even as a weaker browser stockfish it’s astonishing that a human played a move that took an engine 2 to 3 seconds to realize just how strong it was

    5:04 Given the crazy previous game, I thought this would lead to Mamedyarov giving away his queen for 3 pieces (pawn takes knight, knight takes queen, pawn takes bishop, white saves rook, black takes the knight). Sadly it doesn't work because the knight can capture with check, but it would've been nice to see! But this game was even better than this!
    Mamedyarov has crazy games lately, is he possessed by Tal?

    Those are the most Morphy games I have seen back-to-back out of a modern player, ever. It does surprise me that Rapport did not see what was about to come his way down the edge of the board. I was eyeballing that bishop outpost and the double rook access on the H file for a long time, well before any actual attack from black was in position to be a threat. It looked like black's best tool long term. Then it happened. Amazing game.
