  • Film starts at 0:37. For the first time, Orthodox Jewish people in Israel allow a camera to enter their personal lives on an intimate level, enabling us to discover the wisdom behind their way of life, in the potential hope that we can apply some of it to ours. We take a look at relationships between men and women, between singles and their friends, and between them and their families. The story follows the protagonists on their quests for love, across a chronological series of dates.
Dating and matchmaking in the "Haredi" (ultra-Orthodox Jewish) world has always been mysterious and intriguingly different from the secular world. At a time when the institution of marriage in the modern secular world is about to go bankrupt - increasing divorce rates, infidelity, the trend of extended bachelorhood, single parenting, etc. - the question arises: where are we going wrong? And what is it about Haredi relationships that keeps them strong and stable? How does it work?

In the documentary "A Match Made in Heaven" we explore the world of matchmaking in the different sectors of the Haredi world and observe couples in different stages of relationships, and through them, we learn about their behaviour, philosophy, and the key to a happy relationship and marriage. Through the participants' stories, we learn the values of relationships and marriage according to Judaism and how they actually apply them - very different from secular attitudes (love at first sight as opposed to love that comes with time; the women's role in relationships; the man's role). This is the first time that Orthodox Jewish people in Israel allow the camera to enter their close community, and through a different perspective to our own, lend valuable insight into a peaceful coexistence.

As a medical doctor, I can attest the absurd said by the lady who mentioned that rats were given menstrual blood and died. Of course they would die, as there is something called "compatibility", which, in this case, it is not difficult to understand the fact that the blood of a rat is not compatible with the blood of a human being. If it were compatible, we would be raising rats in labs just to donate blood to humans, especially to women with heavy menstrual flow requiring blood transfusions.
If the "American labs" where they supposedly ran these menstrual blood tests injected a healthy man's blood into a rat, that rat would still die. Then what conclusion should be drawn??? A healthy man's blood is very toxic because when injected in rats they die???
This is the danger we still find in Orthodox Jewish Communities who alienate themselves from science and wisdom, which, by the way, was given to mankind directly by Hashem.
    Shalom, shalom!

I came here in an outrage after hearing the Rebbetzin say that!! (The worst defilement on earth no less.) They get away with it because no one is allowed to watch tv, or use the internet or even study anything remotely secular after 8th grade. As for the sects that somehow allow college I am equally outraged to hear a grown woman in law school saying she wants a man to tell her what to do. And that the husbands better not want a job - the uneducated wives are here to pay all the bills while the man studies Torah all day then comes home and bosses everyone around. How are so many women just blindly accepting and allowing this to continue? I don’t care what religion it is when you’re subjugating women it’s just not ok!!! And believe me, get to the extreme edge of every religion they all do it. Be it a burka, Tzniut, Amish blandness or the Duggar version of “showcasing one’s countenance” - it’s just varieties of oppression cut from the same cloth.

Hilary C They’d (Hasidic men and women alike) take just as much offense to our culture. A culture that throws family values out of the window in favor of individuality and hedonism.
It isn’t a system that looks down on women, it’s a system that looks down on divorce...which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There is no “better” way to live. Each system has its flaws, yet people seem to believe that ours is unquestionably better.

    • @carlosmarte3154
      @carlosmarte3154 5 років тому +15

Hilary C One of the main tenets of their religion is to procreate. The only value a Hasidic man or woman has comes from their ability to have a family and give Yahweh a new generation of followers. This comes back to what I was talking about earlier. We place a higher importance on the material side of a relationship, marriage for them is more of a social contract...love is a byproduct of marriage, not a prerequisite. You’re here to procreate and worship Yahweh, not for intellectual fulfillment. That applies to males and females.
They believe that menstruation is the punishment for Eve’s original sin, and the chances of becoming pregnant during menstruation are low; it makes sense for them to have such a low opinion of a process borne out of sin that prevents pregnancy. As for the censorship, they do it to prevent themselves from disobeying their God. Their mission is to procreate and worship, everything else is a distraction. Forcibly barring yourself from whatever it may be is common among all hardliners (whether political, religious, etc).
Women aren’t second class citizens, they just have a different role to perform in the community. A stay at home father would be criticized for not doing his duty, and the same would apply to a mother that’s out working instead of nurturing her children. Women are free to seek out a partner that encourages them to work, and men are free to find partners that prefer to stay at home. No one is being forced or made into a possession.
These rules and customs seem absurd to you and I both, but that’s no reason to look down on the way they do things. They are free to leave the community and become regular practicing Jews whenever or if ever they wish.

She is smart, pretty, sweet, studying for a degree and expects her husband to have a degree and respectful profession.

Merav, if you don't find your soulmate in Israel, come to Miami.

Not to be insulting, but you don't know what crazy is if you think Esti's Mom is crazy. Yes, she was emotional and emphatic in her views. But then this is her daughter's future that was at stake. Young Orthodox girls don't have so many years to find a husband before it's assumed that they are single because something is wrong with them (this what I hear.) I've heard that it's considered unusual if they are not married by age 20.

What is wrong with that marriage counsellor than she was talking about menstrual cycle. I laughed so hard at her ignorance. Menstrual blood is not poisonous. I for one would not have intercourse when i have my period, but she is making it out to sound that the woman is also poisonous. She used the example with the lab rats to say it is poisonous. Menstrual blood is mainly composed of blood, old parts of the uterine tissue, cells from the mucus lining of the vagina and bacteria making up the vaginal flora. And the lab rats experiment definitely never happened, that whole shtick is completely ridiculous.

The marriage counsellor is meshuggah! What a load of rubbish! Menstrual blood is not toxic! It's sad how menstruating is seen as a big shame in the orthodox community. I do like some aspect of orthodox Judaism such as the close family bonds and it must be nice to go on dates knowing that the guy isn't just after one thing. I do get that separating during menstruation can be a good thing as it makes the couple want each other more but personally I wouldn't go to that extreme of not touching at all or waiting so long to be "clean". Why wait another week after your period is finished? Although I do admire aspects of orthodox Judaism, it does seem to me to be very oppressive. I feel sorry for these girls and boys being forced to get married so young; they're only kids and they haven't experienced life. I'm 27 and the idea of getting married is scary! I think there are good aspects with Orthodox Jewish people and not so good aspects. It just seems so primitive to me how the mother's practically are forcing their daughter's to get married so quickly. Barely turning 18 and already making appointments to see the match maker. Do the daughter's have no right to make decisions on their own ? Are they not allowed to experience life and work, go on vacations, have fun with friends ? Or is there fear of the daughter's being touched before marriage. I understand values, purity and the sanctity of marriage but to explain over and over to your daughter's that menstrual blood is poisonous and it killed lab rats ? I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at the pure ignorance of what that woman said. It's crazy smh..

Can anyone else see that Esti and Ariel have very different personalities? She is very aggressive, and Ariel is more subdued. I think Esti's mother is afraid Ariel will get tired of her daughter or start to see traits in her he doesn't like - and then want to break off the dating and/or engagement. I really believe she was just using the issue of "touching" as an excuse.

I live in a extremely Orthodox area in the Uk
and see many different ways of this religion.
I wouldn't be welcome in some of their shops, as I wouldn't be able to follow their dress code, arms, head, uncovered.
It's their way of life, they don't preach to anyone to be like them, keep themselves to themselves, the one's I do have contact with are very nice warming people, you never hear bad words, no bad mouthing, very pleasant community to live with.

Shakes my head at their thinking that a woman's period is horrible and shameful and she has to distance herself and then go get purified, if it was so awful, then why did God make women have one? For me it's a beautiful thing, without it there would be no new life, it should be worshiped and honored. Esti's mother is being over dramatic

Learning so much, and more questions arise.... Many comments about the menstrual cycle, as touched up on during the film... It dawned on me, while watching the film, that Brides - if they wish to satisfy their husband - and themselves - on the Wedding night, That the date of the wedding itself, has to be carefully calculated, according to her cycle, and where it falls...
Are there rules about this, am I being accurate , that that would be a concern, and do others get involved - Are they made aware of reasons for certain dates being required or; put off ?

I've watched a large numbers of videos over the last few days...Incredible ( insular ) world out there, full of rules and restrictions - where the most personal decisions are guided by / decided by...The Rev.
Saw a very nice film - Israeli - '' The Womens' Balcony, dealing with some of the issues touched upon. Well worth the view .

I am half way through this film and wonder, how do people get a divorce in the culture? All this talk of marriage and nothing about the backgrounds of those who have been divorced. Why did it not work out? Why isn't the man "used goods" if he too has been married before? How do the different branches of Jewish communities relate to one another? Apparently they don't really as they don't want to intermarry. But that fact makes genetic diseases more likely within communities that continue to intermarry. They need fresh genes in the mix as well as some fresh air for the lungs and new ideas for the mind!

I found it repulsive that private Jewish laws regarding niddah are presented to the public on a UA-cam video. Private is private, it's ridiculous to copy the secular world where privacy is not cherished anymore and everyone is privy to things that are supposed to be cherished by being kept hidden.
And I find it absolutely repulsive AND nausciating the way that that the niddah teacher spoke about menstrual blood. As an Orthodox Jew, I want to clarify that niddah teachers would never say that a but there are always exceptions to the norm such as in this case...
The laws of family purity are there so that husband and wife should find excitement in their relationship, not get used to being intimate and therefore losing the excitement, but every month should be another chance to reignite the flame.

Not the enitre nation. These are more like sects, who each follow a rabbi. Most Israelis are secular or somewhat traditional, and take rational decisions basd on modern science, not what a rabbi says.

We all have been raised different cultures, different faiths and different upbringings but in reality its 2018 and I hope all prejudices and pains must be buried and love must be the one counts instead of few minutes or few hours gambling of one's lives to strangers

Unless you're especially squeamish, there's no need to avoid sexual activity during your period. Though period sex can be a bit messy, it is safe. And, having sex when you're menstruating can actually offer a few advantages, including relief from menstrual cramps.

    • @leecooper4213

ToND1Ne: I'm thinking that Yehezkel likely has a dominating MOTHER. Growing up under a bossy Mom will make you want to make very sure that you don't end up married to a bossy woman yourself. I think he just hasn't met the right woman yet. When he meets the right woman, all his "demands" of what a wife should be will float away......Would love to see who he ends up marrying ~
