Yes pedometer would be great for the project. The code is Arduino compatible, You can try opening the file main.cpp in Arduino, it should work. (But make sure to install all the necessary libraries)

You can get rid of led on the MPU6050, use a better voltage regulator and you can even replace the vibrating motor with smaller one.
