“La Folia” originated in late 15th-century Portugal as a dance. Its name carries both the meaning of “madness” or “folly” and the positive connotation of “passion.” This variation form, known as “La Folia,” quickly spread across Europe from the late 15th century onward and became one of the most popular forms among Renaissance and Baroque composers.
The theme itself consists of a simple 16-bar progression, but composers added beautiful variations on top of this basic harmonic structure, showcasing their individual creativity. Italian Baroque composers such as Arcangelo Corelli and Antonio Vivaldi are notable examples of those who composed variations based on the “La Folia” theme. Even Johann Sebastian Bach, often regarded as the father of Baroque music, composed variations on the “La Folia” theme.
