Jesus, almost a decade ago. What a great night that was. I feel so lucky that I got to see them. I'd swear I can hear my long lost friend Paulson shouting "Yeah!" at 4:06 and 6:07. One of the few truly transcendant albums ever recorded.
I was there. Probably the most inspiring show I've ever seen. I wonder how many Austin bands were formed as a result. I would kill to see more video from that show!
My brother and I performed this song recently as a tribute to our sister. Didn't quite capture the emotion and craziness (though our horn screwed up royally). An absolutely amazing song to perform and probably my favorite song period
I was born 2 months before this video was filmed. They’ve been one of my favorite bands of all time since I was in 8th grade. This album helped me so much and I eventually saw NMH live in Charlottesville, VA in 2015. Amazing band, life changing album.
This is a fantastic performance. Only Scott is flubbing to a noticable extent and to me a biased listener I'm just fine with it. It gives it a dirtier punk tone and I like how real it helps this video I'm watching on the internet feel sorta kinda like being there if I close my eyes and imagine myself there.
Amazingly beautiful, dense and complex song from a band that most certaily influenced new music darlings, Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade. Just fantastic stuff - wish they had stayed around longer
NMH were the prime example of how a live show isn't ever about nailing notes. Too many people go to a show and are pissed someone did a different solo than usual, or something. If it's got fucking heart, love it and never forget it!
Love both of these studio songs, but this is totally different. This is so FUCKING AWESOME, I love Neutral Milk Hotel, my only wish is that they get together and make more music. Great performance, would absolutely kill to see them live.
Ive listened to Neutral milk hotel for a while but Ive never actually looked up vidoes of them on youtube for some reason. That being said i would like to state that i just jizzzed all over myself.
This performance is the definition of why people say..."[insert name of any band/artist ] is/are much better live" or "you should hear them live" great performance!!!
Ghost, ghost I know you live within me Feel as you fly In thunder clouds above the city Into one that I Loved with all that was left within me Until we tore in two Now wings and rings And there're so many waiting here for you And she was born in a bottle-rocket 1929 With wings that rings around a socket Right between her spine All drenched in milk and holy water pouring from the sky I know that she will live forever She won't ever die And she goes And now she knows she'll never be afraid To watch the morning paper blow into a hole Where no one can escape (De de de de de) And one day in New York City baby A girl fell from the sky From the top of a burning apartment building Fourteen stories high And when her spirit left her body How it split the sun! I know that she will live forever All goes on and on and on and She goes And now she knows she'll never be afraid To watch the morning paper blow into a hole Where no one can escape (De de de de de)
ummm im pretty sure that whatever he's playing is actually mostly inaudible, and the melody at this particular performance is being played on saxophone, which you can see at 6:00 to 6:05. Laura Carter played it on zanzithophone at some number of their shows. And it's a zanzithophone on the album. But not on this one. I think Julian is playing a kazoo.
The thing to remember is that there are only so many notes, rhythms and progressions. It's not recycling if you discover it yourself, even if others did before you.
unfortunately I was born with no musical talent to speak of, but my advice to any aspiring musicians who might watch this video is this: If you're not prepared to play with this much energy, heart, and reckless abandon, well then...don't even get into music. This is far from perfect, but its still one of the best things I've ever heard (the drumming esp.)
Melodica. It's a tiny keyboard with a hose coming out of it, and you play keys while you blow through the instrument. It works like an accordion, but sounds like a bagpipe.
true story. it's mentioned in the 33 1/3 book written about aeroplane. however, they don't specify which song. I'd be interested to know where to listen for it
search google for "Neutral Milk Hotel in the Electric Lounge" 1st result it is a dvd for sale it kicks ass also gavin who runs the site seems like a cool dude
Indeed. Both singers have semi-nasally voices and their music has folk elements, yes. The difference between the two, though, is that The Decemberists are an indie-pop/folk-rock band that puts out stuff that's "pretty good", whereas Neutral Milk Hotel is an indie/psychedlic-folk band that, with only two real albums, has become one of the biggest names in the "indie world" because they're so fucking amazing. This music is infinitely more emotionally raw than anything by The Decemberists.
Actually I don't think anyone's using using a melodica. What julian's using looks too small to be one, which leads me to believe that he's just using a harmonica, which is pretty audible in the video. I think the main melody (the one done with bagpipes on the album) is played by the saxophonist on the left because at 6:02 he appears to be the only one playing. Not to mention it sounds like a saxophone.
love the song and this video, best bits are when jeff is headbanging and jumping about on the stage with the other bloke and when he sings from 4:17-4:38 - so funny!
I'm a huge Neutral Milk Hotel and Jeff Mangum fan, and I'm not so into Arcade Fire, but I have Funeral and Neon Bible, and what exactly did they steal from them? I'm just curious on what you think.
Actually, Jeff Mangum plays bagpipes for this son on the album itself. Sorry, champ. Also, Scott Spillane plays trumpet, and yes he can play, as he plays it in this song.
this is incredible sound quality for being recorded on a vhs tape
no
The audio was probably recorded separately and then synched up in post-production

When 2028 arrives it’ll be 2 decades since this. Why is time going this fast 😂
this is why nmh should win a grammy every year.
Untitled has to be one of the best songs Neutral Milk Hotel put together.

If this album came out tomorrow it would blow UP.
People nowadays go crazy for stuff like this.
i love this band.
the way julian jumps onto jeff at the end is so funny
I wish they would have done untitled live so much more often. It's my favorite off the album.
Plus it always sounds so good live.
Good thing they played it during like every show during the reunion tours lol

Honestly I love how badly scott sometimes plays, it makes for a very interesting listen.
it's like hearing a singer's voice break from emotion. just like with "and now she knows she'll never be afrAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIiiid"
Amazing. Thank you for posting this. Come back Jeff.
Just got my tix a few days ago to see Neutral Milk Hotel this Fall...... this is gonna be EPIC.
How was it?
Damn you're lucky! I'm crossing my fingers that they'll do another reunion tour.

never heard them do untitled live before so awesome! ^.^
I saw them about a month later at the 15th Tavern in Denver and it was the most amazing show I’ve ever seen.
That guitar tone is amazing.
What a great live band
really wish I'd had the pleasure of seeing them, just once. This will do and is an awesome fallback..Thanks for sharing. Wish I was there.
That's awesome when they all start jumping during Untitled. Makes you realize how amazing it would be if they came back...=/
Love the drums on this
Yessir!
This is huge. The passion these guys have can't even be matched.
I've been obsessed with this band's music for years and years and I must say, i've never heard it before.
Amazing!!! I love the flaws; they're well compensated by enthusiasm. This is one of the best bands, ever.

the sound is great on this video!
I'm impressed
one of their greatest video recordings

how great is it that people thought to shoot this and those other nmh and mangum gigs? thanks to all of them.
hahaha. YEESSSSSS.
definitely one of the best live performances ive seen.
Animal from the Muppets on drums, ladies and gentleman.
Jeremy Barnes is the best drummer ever.
What the hell is Jeff saying between Ghost and Untitled?
I have like no clue.
Some lyrics off of beutiful baby i believe
Ghost, ghost
I know you live within me
Feel as you fly
In thunder clouds above the city
Into one that I
Loved with all that was left within me
Until we tore in two
Now wings and rings
And there're so many waiting here for you
And she was born in a bottle-rocket
1929
With wings that rings around a socket
Right between her spine
All drenched in milk and holy water pouring from the sky
I know that she will live forever
She won't ever die
And she goes
And now she knows she'll never be afraid
To watch the morning paper blow into a hole
Where no one can escape
(De de de de de)
And one day in New York City baby
A girl fell from the sky
From the top of a burning apartment building
Fourteen stories high
And when her spirit left her body
How it split the sun!
I know that she will live forever
All goes on and on and on and
She goes
And now she knows she'll never be afraid
To watch the morning paper blow into a hole
Where no one can escape
(De de de de de)

doesn't get any better than this
8 days after this I would've been turning 3. I wish I knew NMH earlier, maybe for worse.
this is amazing
The unorthodox instruments, artistic lyrics, and general persona. Which is more of "influenced by" than "stole from"
The thing to remember is that there are only so many notes, rhythms and progressions. It's not recycling if you discover it yourself, even if others did before you.
I think it's funny that, when his solo is over, he just stands there awkwardly for a few seconds, smiles, and walks away.
BRILLIANT.
