An Indian Navy speedboat that was undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with a passenger ferry off the coast of Mumbai. At least 13 people including a naval personnel and 2 people from the equipment manufacturer were killed in the accident. Visuals were captured on camera from the ferry, which was carrying 110 people. The navy craft was carrying 5 people and 10 passengers on the ferry were killed ... and the remaining 102 including the 2 survivors from the navy craft were rescued. Rescue operations are currently underway - and they're being carried out by the Mumbai police, Indian Navy and coast guard personnel. Here's all you need to know

How can engine malfunction cause sudden change in boat direction? Is the engine responsible for direction? I'm not understanding
And then why the trial was going on in area where civilian boats were present?
Well there may be also a possibility where when the boat was in the same direction where the ferry was there then the boat may had been malfunctioned and the driver couldn't changed its direction afterwards

What they have come out is a general excuse which is given in such accidents. It is obviously not the cause. The main reasons are first allowing trials in a public area and then putting a crazy driver on the boat who was clearly doing stunts before it crashed.

Conspiracy angle cannot be ruled out. Apparently, the speed boat was under perfect control while doing zigzag at some distance but in a moment it changed direction and headed straight towards the passenger boat and that too at furiously accelerated speed. Around the world there have been instances of vehicles including cars, trucks, and even aeroplanes being used as weapons of mass destruction. Thorough investigation is necessary.
Why should one do such testing in a populated zone ? Irresponsible.

Then switch off the engine. Turn the switch to OFF or stop the fuel supply. Besides steering the vessel with U turn.
