    Embracing professionalism
    The restaurant industry is challenging and not for everyone. However, those of us who love this industry know the importance of being a professional. Many believe that degrees and certifications define professionalism, but the truth is that professionalism is an attitude and approach to work.
    Professionalism is innate
    You already have what it takes to be a professional. It’s not about the titles or certifications; it’s about how you conduct yourself. Professionals strive for improvement through education and training, not because they need validation, but because they are committed to excellence.
    The impact of professionalism
    Bringing professionalism into your restaurant elevates everything-from customer service to team performance. When your team embraces professionalism, you’ll see increased customer satisfaction, higher sales, lower costs, and better control over operations.
    Attitude matters
    My father used to say there are two types of people: “bul dingies” and fantastic people. Bul dingies have a negative attitude and bring others down, while fantastic people uplift those around them with their positivity and dedication. Professionals choose to be fantastic people, regardless of how they feel.
    Flexibility is key
    Dr. Otis Maxfield, who selected NASA's first astronauts, found that flexibility was the most crucial trait for success. Test pilots, trained to follow strict procedures, struggled with unexpected challenges. In contrast, flexible individuals adapted and thrived. In the restaurant industry, adaptability is essential for overcoming obstacles and embracing new opportunities.
    Building Trust
    Trust is the foundation of a successful team. Avoid creating an environment of distrust where employees feel set up for failure. Instead, foster open communication and problem-solving. When mistakes happen, treat them as learning opportunities rather than failures. A trusting environment encourages innovation and loyalty.
    Leading by example
    As a professional, your actions speak louder than words. Show up on time, maintain a positive attitude, and demonstrate flexibility. Your behavior sets the standard for your team. When they see you leading by example, they’ll be inspired to follow suit.
