  • Painting French doors and windows without having to use tape sounds like a dream, right? But with masking liquid H20 it is absolutely possible to paint windows and multi-panel window doors without having to tape them! Masking liquid can be brushed, rolled or sprayed onto glass windows. It dries within 30-45 minutes and is ready for topcoat when it is completely clear.
    Masking liquid is great for weekend Warriors and professionals.
    It works as a primer so when you are painting multi-paneled windows or French doors you do not have to worry about it getting on to your previously painted surfaces or bare wood.

    I used to mask them off. But ive learned to just cut them in the best i can then, come back with a razor and clean them up. Really not that bad.

    And when it was time to take off the liquid masking it didnt pero off we had to scrape it off

      Ifv you're doing multiple doors at a time this is the quickest way in my opinion. We spray our liquid mask on doors with an airless sprayer or and HVLP. It goes on real quick, then we spray the doors.

    Love this stuff in new Zealand its seel and peel
    I use it on every house i do if they have wooden windows so much faster and looks nice once peeled off
    Use to be the guy who said real painters cut in but ive been converted lol
    One problem ive had a few times though is when i brush it onto glass it kinda beads off certain parts could this be window clean , grease etc

    Looks like a good way to paint French doors. What, however, is the benefit of doing this over just painting sloppily, using the trim knife like you did and then scraping excess paint off the glass with a razor blade scraper? The benefit is that I don't have to buy anything but maybe a few more razor blades and I don't spend time painting the glass. Thanks.

      When you own the business you'll find ways to boost productivity. When you have 20 or 30 French doors to paint in a day you'll be glad you won't have to scrape anything 😂. But don't worry, productive thinking like that comes with experience over time come you'll get it too some day👍🏼

    I love using the liquid masking, especially on French doors. But I got burned this week. I painted two stained French doors. I used a mini roller to apply 2 coats of liquid masking. I brushed and rolled a coat of white primer. Sprayed two coats of a charcoal color. Liquid masking came off pretty good. However, there were real thin white lines on nearly all the panes. Looks pretty bad. I’m wondering if my brushing the primer on the panes penetrated deeper in the edges than the sprayed overcoat. Perhaps I should have used a brush also on the panes when applying the top coat...or maybe I should have brushed the liquid masking into the corners instead of rolling it. What a pain! Actually lots of Pain! Always learning.
    Any other ideas.

      Yeah, great stuff!
      I had that problem before too
      The trick is to pay attention to the angle of your blade.
      You want to cut it underneath the wood in an acute angle between 0°-89°so that it wraps around it entirely. You think that might've been the culprit?

    • @gregchenoweth8963
      @gregchenoweth8963 4 роки тому +1

      I think I would have been good if I had brushed the liquid masking down into the muntin.

    Can you really paint over it when its on the wood? How can this be a good primer?

    • @DIYhomeimprovementguy
      @DIYhomeimprovementguy  4 роки тому +1

      It's very similar to exterior peel bond. It acts like a glue similar to wood glue that's paintable and peels off the glass.

      I would say rent a sprayer and spray it. But if that's not something you're comfortable with then there are a few options. Shoot me a email and I'll give you some more info. Go to 518painters.com and send me a message.

    Do I have to put a second coat with the sprayer or hvlp?

    • @DIYhomeimprovementguy
      @DIYhomeimprovementguy  3 роки тому

      I would do a second coat only because it peels easier if it's thicker.

    Hi! Just watched your video and the boss and I had some French doors to paint. Figured we'd give this a whirl. Didn't turn out so well. We used the spray can version as our paint t store told my boss that people swear by this stuff. It didn't work out so well. We spent hours scraping this off the windows. It was horrible. Any advice? I would love to use this but, as of now, I'd never touch it again. Thanks!!

      @DIYhomeimprovementguy  4 роки тому +1

      Oh man, I did the same thing the first time!
      Always use the canned stuff and do at least 2 coats. It has to build up a thick layer to peel off easy.
      Get a quart and try it on some test glass and you'll see what I mean. Try it on your bathroom mirror👍🏼

    Buy a nice expensive four inch brush... Learn to paint right and left-handed and cut them French windows in... The secret is having an excellent 4 inch brush and a steady hand. Slightly dab your corners first and then Trace out the sides. Bada boom...Bada Bing...

      We remove all doors and spray them on our projects, so while you're prepping the rest of the building the doors will have enough time to dry. If you only have 1 or 2 doors to do then go ahead and tape but when you're doing 10-20 doors good luck 😂
