Fascinating learning the history of this huge businesses. To see their strategic plays over the years is interesting to see how they are still relevant today. Great videos!
Apart from the third party operators out there, one familiar to those my age is GTE (General Telephone), whose service differed greatly from Bell/AT&T as they had to have their own phones and wires. Don't forget before 1984, Bell was the only company to manufacture their own phones that customers could only pay to have installed in their homes. You just don't go out and buy an extra phone as it didn't work that way. That all changed after the breakup and we started to see a lot of cheaply-produced phones out on the market. Bell System phones (made by Western Electric) were heavy and practically unbreakable like tanks. Getting back to GTE, they mostly serviced specific areas Bell wasn't it, usually rural/suburban. My grandma had GTE where she was and I can remember the odd noise the dialer made and the rings itself. I'm sure this all had to do with those specific patents AT&T had. It should be noted, outside of DirecTV, AT&T also has it's own broadband service including DSL and a cable TV service called "U-Verse" in a number of markets they do operate landline phone service in (like the former Ohio Bell in my state).

I also live in Orlando, Florida & I have Fiber Internet provides by AT&T for a good price. But here they do have to compete with Spectrum Cable as well.
Satellite internet my peeps; thats where I believe AT&T is and always planned to be heading towards with the aquisition of DTV. Another great video @BusinessCasualYT. Nostradomus out.
My dad was a higher up for bellsouth and I remember when at&t bought them back he was pissed because they wanted to completely get rid of the district he was in charge of (central florida)
My dad worked on a plastics molding and assembly line for Western Electric. Pretty much a sweatshop. No A/C and plastic fumes. His pension sucked after the breakup. He died of cancer, no surprise.
I think you guys made a mistake at the end... AT&T is indeed trying to buy Time Warner, the entertainment company, but not Time Warner Cable, so them acquiring Time Warner has nothing to do with broadband or internet.
I agree with you. Time Warner Entertainment is a separate company from Time Warner Cable, who was recently acquired by Charter Communications and renamed Charter Spectrum.
This video naturally overlooks a lot of history in order to keep the video relatively short. For example, people often claim that landline phone service was a natural monopoly, because how efficient would it have been to run multiple, competing phone lines? While that certainly pointed to a difficulty early phone companies had, it doesn't really make it a natural monopoly, Instead, the companies were working out agreements to share the phone lines, so that multiple lines weren't necessary. Bell Telephone, however, successfully argued the "natural monopoly" argument to local legislators, and got them to grant local monopolies to phone companies, and Bell, being the biggest phone company at the time, was well-positioned to receive most of those government-granted monopolies. And, in fact, national telecommunications in the U.S. was nationalized, if only briefly: "In 1918 the federal government nationalized the entire telecommunications industry, with national security as the stated intent. Rates were regulated so that customers in large cities would pay higher rates to subsidize those in more remote areas. Vail was appointed to manage the telephone system with AT&T being paid a percentage of the telephone revenues. AT&T profited well from the nationalization arrangement which ended a year later. States then began regulating rates so that those in rural areas would not have to pay high prices, and competition was highly regulated or prohibited in local markets. Also, potential competitors were forbidden from installing new lines to compete, with state governments wishing to avoid "duplication." The claim was that telephone service was a "natural monopoly," meaning that one firm could better serve the public than two or more. Eventually, AT&T's market share amounted to what most would regard as a monopolistic share." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_AT%26T The history of phone service in the U.S. would have been very different if government intervention hadn't occurred.
Well, J S, you cared enough to comment, even if you didn't address any of the points made. Also, several studies have been conducted on the accuracy of Wikipedia, and it's not nearly as inaccurate as you might think, especially on more scholarly articles. It even compares favorably to the Encyclopedia Britannica. There are several articles talking about this and making reference to the studies, if you trust Google: www.google.com/search?biw=1360&bih=646&q=accuracy+of+wikipedia&oq=Accuracy+of+Wiki&gs_l=psy-ab.1.0.0l4j0i22i30k1l6.92715648.92720651.0.92722988.26.18.1.0.0.0.399.2954.0j2j5j4.11.0.dummy_maps_web_fallback...0...1.1.64.psy-ab..15.11.2763...0i131k1j0i67k1j0i13k1j0i10k1.0.vFbALHnUBWk Here's one that specifically talks about a comparison between Wikipedia and Britannica. www.cnet.com/news/study-wikipedia-as-accurate-as-britannica/ And if you really don't trust Wikipedia, follow the links and cites they provide for proof of what is said in the article. Wikipedia is a great place to start a search or look up a quick reference point. I learned lots of stuff in school, but there was no internet, much less a Wikipedia site, when I was in school. Do you care to address any of the points made in the original comment, or did you just come here to make yourself look like a fool?
I left spectrum for At&t and I truly regret doing so. My wifi doesn't work have the time. My cable is constantly freezing. Movies that I recorded won't play because the modem needs rebooted most of the time. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? And im in the contract for a year and I can't just get out of it. SMH!
I have had AT&T for 3 yrs and recently I wanted to upgrade my phone. I have internet, direct tv and cellphone. Their prices and plans are not even close to their competitors. Went to Sprint for my phone and drooped cell service and kept internet & DTV . Got my bill in NOV and the drop was very little. My internet is est $55 , my DTV is $40 but they billed me $173.06 2mos in a row. So i contacted customer service 3 times and they seam to not know how to add & subtract. So dont think because they say you are a valued customer that they wont cheat you.
What I don't understand is how is it at and t was the first phone company yet there cell phone service sucks and everyone I know that's had it has complained?
I don’t understand the “BROWSER” issue, but I have one. Between Chase JP Morgan & At&t I have issues. I was NEVER with Verizon. Seems like I’m having dual issues. I can’t even explain the corruption nor can I afford internet.
Cingular was partly owned by SBC. When SBC bought the old AT&T, they merged Cingular with the old AT&T's wireless service and unified the entire company under the AT&T name once again.
actually the reason Att is in wireless is becauae they purchased Cingular Wireless in 2007, the aqquisition caused Controversy in their NASCAR sponsorship becauae Cingular was grandfathered in, at the time Sprint-Nextel sponsored the cup series and blocked competitors, its gone now because Monster Energy drink took over title sponsorship a year ago
Did tab for a cause pay you? Because if they did it means they’re not using 100% of the money I give for charity... they use that to advertiser (such as paying you) and maybe who knows? If they do that, they might also pocket some money
Proper NPO's will display the percentage that actually reach the cause as part of the organisation profile. 85%+ is the standard I look for before giving.
If they end up with more money because they spent a little on advertising, then that's a good thing. And every charity "pockets" some money, they have expenses and employees to pay.
I can't believe someone who knows so much about the history of government regulations would still use Ajit Pai as a bad example of the FCC. First time in history that the FCC cut regulations and you people still think the indian is the bad guy...
"If it's free you're the product."
Ain't that the truth.
That's how it works. Multi-player games, social media, etc
Just like prison!
Fascinating learning the history of this huge businesses. To see their strategic plays over the years is interesting to see how they are still relevant today. Great videos!
Jonathan Acuña It's called Jew control.
Wow! I always kind of knew AT&T was pretty awesome carrier but it's history pretty amazing too.
These videos are so good. Well versed, brilliantly created, punctuated with pure intelligence. THIS is what UA-cam needs.. NOT Jerk Porl.

I also live in Orlando, Florida & I have Fiber Internet provides by AT&T for a good price. But here they do have to compete with Spectrum Cable as well.
I might start using his "tab for a cause", I have between 80 and almost 200 tabs opened. And once I check them all I'll end up opening more anyway.
How do you think the business makes its money? It's obviously collecting and selling the data of the websites you visit.

I just realized I watched a slideshow.
That jab at Ajit Pai, OMG THAT WAS GREAT.
Wait... So AT&T is actually rebranded SDC and it sold most of its assets but remained in the network industry and made a huge chunk money, right?
I think you guys made a mistake at the end... AT&T is indeed trying to buy Time Warner, the entertainment company, but not Time Warner Cable, so them acquiring Time Warner has nothing to do with broadband or internet.
Dima N nice try shill
I agree with you. Time Warner Entertainment is a separate company from Time Warner Cable, who was recently acquired by Charter Communications and renamed Charter Spectrum.
Raul Valles / What the fuck is your problem dude? I'm just stating a basic fact, look it up for yourself.

At&t had some interesting history. Nice video thanks

Great Video. I cannot wait for AT&T owning Warner Brothers. Long Live AT&T!
In the same year of 1907 J.P. Morgan also put up the cash needed for the Olympic the Titanic and later the Britannic to be built.
Did J.P. Morgan just invest in or buy anything he could?
Amazing video as always! Do SpaceX or OpenAI next!
Knowledge Headquarters OpenAI? Is that some kind of open-source ai project?
It's a non-profit ai research company run. Elon Musk is one of the founders.

Hah, that's great! The Big Bang Theory is a drooling piece of garbage. Absolute trash. I like his channel (and Felix) more and more :D
