Eldorado was a bit slow at the start, but towards the end it was getting quite good and would have probably slotted into that mid-90's soap craze quite well.
Eldorado would have been massive during the early to mid 1980's, but by the early 1990's, people had started to see through the culture of exotica and excess, it just goes to prove that you need luck and timing in almost every aspect of life. That said, Eldorado was absolutely pants!
It was a crying shame that the BBC got rid of this; they should have believed in it more and backed it, as it was just gaining traction when the axe fell...
The Bunny &Fizz couple looked creepy and ridiculous - more like father and daughter …., and that strange handyman bloke Snowy White made my skin crawl , he was vile . It was such an oddball cast , most of them couldn’t act - and some scenes in Spanish with no subtitles 🤷🏻♂️ whole thing was badly planned and no wonder it failed
One of then was made by sky one. It was called spring Hill it was made in 1996 a few years after eldorado by Dr who writer Russel T, it was quite good but not many watched it as it was on funny times. The rest I haven't a clue . I found that out doing some online fishing.
Westbeach, made by WitzEnd Productions and set in Eastbourne, was the other. It lost to Eldorado, but was reformatted into a weekly Saturday night series.
@@andrewbarton2590 Yes indeed so too. But I remember watching Westbeach when it was on in 1993, and alas it was terrible too! Of course, this was at a time when BBC1 was showing some other series that were not winners too. Not just Eldorado and Westbeach; but also Strathblair; Trainer; A Year In Provence with John Thaw really miscast alas too. Not that all its series were so; it was showing The Riff Raff Element which was not so bad; and other series like The House Of Elliott so too.
Later in 1995 after Eldorado, BBC1 did then show Castles, which was written by then Coronation Street writer Peter Whalley. That I felt was alright, but it only lasted one series though which was a shame really so then too.
Also I believe after all the disasters there, later on the BBC brought in Nick Elliott who had been before at LWT ITV, to be head of their drama department. I think this later led in 1996 to more popular series such as Ballykissangel; Dalziel and Pascoe; Hamish Macbeth and Silent Witness starting then on BBC1 of course so too.
It was just insane, some of the characters in it, for example : Bunny(the overweight balding middle aged man) with his 17 year old bride Fizz. Who on Earth thought that was a good idea?
The Show had a great consepct it was just rushed and it was axed by the new head of bbc not due to lack of viewers it had 8 million viewers in its last couple of weeks sure just look at them 5 eps of eastenders where pat and peggy frank and roy went to spain ?
"I thought a lot of the top British tv actors were well off financially but unlike the American actors the British actors especially the older veteran actors pretty much lived on monthly pensions for example I thought Benny Hill was a millionaire being a big comedy star but he wasn't, British actors put in real good performances and get paid very little but the american ones get paid a lot and are very bad, British soaps are pretty much realistic some try to emulate the american ones, U.K. soaps are better at least from what I have seen of them."-🤔📻. 🌐🌍🌎🌏🗺🌏🌎🌍🌐.
This was just rushed it was also the first soap to cast a real disabled actor. Some characters that work on paper don't work in real, shows take time to mold and grow the last 2 months of this show my parents wouldn't miss an episode nor did 9-10 million peole cause they had hit gold it was crafted and worked. Eastenders gets 2 to 5 million now the last few years but they will never get rid of that . The real reason it was cancled was cause England knew they where leaving Europe and they where not taking the Euro money coming in and having a tag line "bringing Europe together as one" just didn't work. BBC is government run. Where as Channel 4 is privately owned that's why brookside was able to be so racey, (didn't like it) 🙄. Anyhow the BBC ****** UP. Shame on them they would be crying out for 9 to 10 million viewers now.
The ending seems pretty crappy tbh, A Renault Alpine drives slowly towards the camera, and after a painfully obvious cut in the film, transforms into a Triumph TR7 that's been _very_ badly disguised to look _vaguely_ like said Renault, and blows up?
@@Robert_B_445 there's more of a mafia story towards the end with East end gangsters. I've never noticed the car mistake I like the alpine. I'll watch that again. The show still was a bit slow though

Thank you for this!!
Why did the producers cast a number of non-actors when the show started? Surely if they couldn't act, what was the point of casting them?
Thanx so much for posting xx

This turned out to be a pretty good soap once all those goofy teenagers were let go. Too bad it didn't last a few more years.

Same thing happened with ITV soaps London Bridge and Family Affairs.
Family Affairs actually aired on Channel 5 not ITV
You mean Albion Market? Itv short lived Eastenders clone.
"The rise and fall" it never did rise to fall
I'm curious as to what the other possible soap operas may have been about, the ones that didn't get picked in favor of "Eldorado."

Oddly no mention of the Aussie soap influence ... yet, anyway!
It was nothing like the Aussie soaps, apart from the weather.
It was just insane, some of the characters in it, for example : Bunny(the overweight balding middle aged man) with his 17 year old bride Fizz. Who on Earth thought that was a good idea?
Would not happen today
no, it would be an overweight, middle aged woman with a 17 year old...! there would be LGBT and tans people as well.@@lucyllewellyn2850
17 is too young, 20 should be the age of consent/chicks being allowed to go with 50+ year men.
Sun, sea and sex? I don't recall Eldorado being remotely sexy.
There was the chemistry between Pilar and Markooooos.
Why is the voiceover terrifying?
it the same voice that does the Hex story at alton towers
It's p*** take
It's tongue in cheek
@nwlman Eastenders was great from the start.
is this a murder documentary or a soap docu?
speaking in Spanish without subs is insane. it should not have gone out.

Why was the BBC in so much trouble in the early 90s
Tories

they never gave it a chance, Eastenders was rotten at the begining, ITV had Albion Market, they axed that as well
nwlman at the time itv said that when Corrie is 50 Albion market will be 25
and wwe raw fron 93 to 99
so instead of trying to make eastenders better ( I love it) they deside to make a whole new soap with some of the producers and writers of eastenders
Twas the 1990s - all implied.
The end of the show is pretty decent but early episodes are shite
The ending seems pretty crappy tbh,

El dorado had less life in it than my nans tights
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Omg Tony Holland that man has a very annoying voice
It's not too bad if you stick the video on 1.25x speed
He's got alot to answer for with that piece of shit eastenders
The music choices for this programme are awful! Really irritating and distracting
Eldorado was embarrassing, why is that Tony Holland always looking scruffy and homeless? he must have bags of cash..?!
A bunch of bad actors with different accents playing unrealistic characters in a badly written poorly acted soap.
How back then and now the Brussels Broadcasting Corporation love to waste tax payers money and keep asking for more but keep giving us less.
"Brussels" broadcasting corporation? You mentally ill? Switch GB News off and go out for a walk.
sun , sex ha ha ha and southern spain , it was a joke . such bad acting
