Well the guys in Radiohead have certainly given us a lot to sink our teeth into with this one.
As the lead single off their 1997 album OK Computer (the whole thing is brilliant by the way), "Paranoid Android" was an unlikely hit due to it's unorthodox song structure and song length.
The song is really four entirely separate sections, each written by a different member of the band. In this Paranoid Android guitar lesson I will lead you through all of these sections note-for-note.
The first section starts in C minor and contains a challenging arpeggiated picking pattern throughout most of it. Besides getting these notes under your fingers, you will really want to listen to the original recording and focus on nailing the rhythmic feel. This wouldn't be that hard to do if they played straight 16th notes, but every chord in this sequence has some sort of rhythmic pause. Pay close attention to when I am pausing in the lesson to help you know what to listen for when listening to the original recording.
Also of importance in this section is the picking pattern. The way I will demonstrate to pick this part is very economical and will save you a bunch of headaches if you learn it right the first time. :)
The second section I will teach you in this Paranoid Android guitar lesson is in A minor and completely changes the feel with a funky single note riff that then leads into a fast shifting series of chords that require you to use your thumb in the bass. Don't worry, I will also show you how to play it with simple barre chords if you don't want to use your thumb.
In the second video lesson I will tackle the hard rocking section which incorporates the funky single note riff we learned earlier along with a bunch of quick chord shifts.
Also in the second lesson I will show you the really cool acoustic chord progression played during the sad choral section of the song. Very haunting and unique! These chords can also provide a good challenge for someone trying to learn how to play barre chords on the acoustic.
So I hope you enjoy playing through this epic Radiohead track. Radiohead has long been one of my favorite bands and it is about time that I give this song the lesson treatment that it deserves. :)
Carl...
If i ever become able to play this song in its entirety from beginning to end without staggering. My life would be complete.
Feel you man
are you still trying?
Don’t forget about singin it at the same time. Songs hard as shit
@@sigmasquad5285
Singing over it isn't that hard once you honed the muscle memory of the guitar part, but yeah singing well over it it's a challenge for sure
I promise you this, as soon as you learn this there will be another song thats harder that youll need to learn to make your guitar playing life complete. I used to think this about this song when it came out as a teenager lol. The bar always moves up. And they way this guy is playing it is simplified in various parts. I learned it first that way then learned all the different parts that are more complicated but dont work as well with one guitar since they are part on a multiple guitar arrangement. So in other words to play it with one guitar you kinda have to simplify some parts so the melody is there. Your comment was two years old, i wonder if youve figured it out yet. Another thing is that if you dont play it (at least in my case) often then youll start changing the rhythm without noticing and ever couple years ill look up the music for it to correct the parts that ive been slowly changing unintentionally lol.
good songs are hard
good songs are hard
but good songs are heard
Good songs can be easy too, like Smoke On The Water
not as hard songs are not as good
John Dou If that were true then John Petrucci would be more famous than Noel from Oasis
That’s what makes them great
Thom yorke is a very underrated acoustic player, this stuff ain't easy to play and sing with...
How tf did he even make it
It is easy as fuck
@@mehimself3936 ok
@@mehimself3936 ok

My life goal now is to learn how to play this.
Jonathan learnt it yet?
Same
You think this hard? give this Little tune called “smoke on the water” a go and come back to me
Rotisserie Chiggen you’re joking right?
its not that hard
this is gonna be the first song i learn that isn’t just basic chords lol wish me luck
edit: ok if u wanna play this song but it looks difficult just learn it! it’s been a week and i just practiced a little each day and now i can play it (not that fluently but with more practice i’m sure it will sound much better soon) good luck :)
well done the community is proud of you !
I may be paranoid, but not an android
If you think about it, you can only be either one 🤔
My mom is gay
@@joelvelazquez4748 Yeah because androids don't have feeling or emotions.
'Marvin'; Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy.
what's that
One Thing I Can Recommend Is That In The Intro Consistancy Isnt Really Important , Yorke Plays It A Bit Different Every Time.
Why Did You Capitalize The First Letter Of Every Word Like A Song Name?
@@jacksonwaldon fair question
@@jacksonwaldon maybe it's the name from a new radiohead song
Yeah i noticed that the important notes are the higher notes and the rhythm of the notes. Doesn't really matter if you switch some of the lower notes long as they are played in the right rhythm
Been playing 8 months, started this song 4 weeks ago, can now play all first video at speed, very difficult song but worth sticking at it, great video, great lesson, and out of all the lessons i have tried this is by far the best, good luck guys
how’s the playing going after a year?
@@ThePsychicProject I'm guessing he's already learned the whole song and has move into various other ones :P
lol I'm surprised Marty doesn't have a tutorial for this
SpanishDandy because he only does simple songs and this song isn't simple enough
@@chrisr7419 that's true
because Marty sucks. he didn't even do Can't Stop by the RHCP the right way
@@chrisr7419 he does teach Little Wing and some other difficult stuff though...
@@traiancraciun1442 woah chill man
definitely a song someone should learn in small sections not a beginner guitar song for sure
Great lesson but it's complicated. I think you should add tabs of it.
yes tabs pls
+Right Hand tabs, not tuning :P
How do you play UA-cam at half speed?
Thanks
click on the little cog, there is a setting in there for speed
Abit late but if you use a search engine called google you can find a 5 star tab by searching said song with "tabs" after,
It's so easy you'll feel stupid right after trust me dude.
Three quick points
1 Your hands are made for guitar man. I wish I had fingers like that. My short stubby fingers get all tangled up trying to play this lol
2 where is your accent from? At first I thought Australia then southern US then Canada lol
3 AMAZING lesson. Among the best lessons on youtube. Thanks so much. However I haven't a hope in hell of pulling this off AND singing it lol
Cheers
James Ness Hey James, thanks for watching! I am actually from the southern US (NC to be exact). :)
GuitarLessons365Song Cool, thanks for the reply to a very random thought lol. Loved NC when I visited. Particularly all the huge fireworks stores! 🎆
Thanks for posting this vid. I'm having a blast working through this song today.
Cheers from Canada!
James Ness Australia? Lol!!!
Just a guess... But glad I could give you a laugh :)
Same.
Fuck yeah!!! Was not expecting you to do this, one of my favorite songs of all time!
7:24 here is where he plays the whole riff slowly if anyone wants to play along
this song is alot easier if u finger pick it
Fingerpicking is the way to go for this song for sure!
Grow nails!!! Or get this finger picks
Nop nop it sound bad
@@aksheymehta77 Fingers always sound better than pick
I was wondering if anyone else was doing this... I wonder if there's some benefit to doing standard picking rather than fingerpicking, because fingerpicking feels way easier
This song really a good exercise for pick users.when ı first start to the guitar ı started with fingerpick and over 8 month ı think ı play that way. ı have been using picks for 3 month and first ı learned this song it’s almost impossible to play with pick without looking into my hands. When ı was playing with picks ı usually get lost after a short amount of time.if you have a problem about this ı would recommend you that play with confidence don’t think about getting lost.this was my personal experience so don’t think about the only cure to getting lost is to play with confidence
my only problem is fingers hurt like a bitch now
I know this is an old video but I really gotta thank u, it was always my dream to play this song and now that I'm actually doing it, feels so awesome. thanks man.
Way to make this overwhelmingly difficult song more manageable. Thank you so much, this a great! Before getting too far ahead of myself I'll be playing part 3:13 to 3:16 over and over again for a week.
He recorded a super difficult version yet plays a simplified version in live settings which makes it a bit easier to sing over, however, it is still a massive undertaking. I mark out when i see Thom just absolutely smash the song on an acoustic while having one of his performance seizures, he is a legit beast of a musician.
Performance seizures is the best description I’ve heard 😂
Great lesson! A tabbed PDF would really help. Is there one available?
I never thought I could find such a good tutorial :D
same
Hey man, wicked tutorial. I've been practising for weeks and I've got most of it down. Can I please ask what the barre chords are for the last part? I can't get my hands into the position for the thumb chords and I can't work out the barre chords from just looking at them. I tried but what I'm playing sounds nothing like what you're doing. Amazing tutorial, best guitar lessons on youtube by far! :)
Radiohead you fucking musical geniuses
I've been looking at guitar lessons on UA-cam for year's and I barely found out about you! Great stuff Carl!
Subscribed.
One of the best guitar teachers on youtube. I love how he takes the time to explain every chord, fret, and stroke involved in the song. I am a beginner and I could perfectly understand everything with the way he explains it/demonstrates. You rock! 👍🎸
dude, loved the video, but you should put tabs though. they really help to make the learning faster while watching the video
Perfect example of a song seeming easy on the listen, and then you learn to play it, realizing how wrong you were.
First song I’m learning in my college dorm. Thank you Carl!!!
might learn this to impress a girl
please, can you teach how to play the song there there of radiohead ? i love this song !! i love your work ! thank you !
What guitar is that, it's really nice?
What a wonderful lesson! Been training whole week and finally got good result
Here's the funny part, the second part of the video has almost 5 times less views than the first one, most people including me come all pumped up to learn this song, and then by the end of this video realise that there's just too much going on to learn, and that only defines what a musical genius the band Radiohead is! Great video btw! :)
Thanks for the lesson. I know I just said that on part two, but I’m under the assumption that comments help your your channels visibility so.... comment made!
Here in 2024. Like a lot of people here, I am also making a commitment to myself that this is why I must live, to be able to play this song! I hope in a year or two there is a comment down here asking if I did it or not and then I say : Yessssss!!!
Did one of year practice returned to this song man feels good to play it now , and how the fuck he sings while playing this hard ass shit
7:30 just marking for myself!
And I've been just working on this song in Rocksmith 2014 :) It's like if you were reading my mind. Thanks for this another great lesson.
Don't stop making these vids. They are excellent albeit I have only been through two - but, so far great taste in music, John Frusciante on dani and now Radiohead with paranoid. Do you take requests? And do you figure these out yourself or use sheet music first? Great job keep it up!
Brilliant lesson. Broke down the shapes and picking very well, made the song seem way easier to play than I initially thought. Many thanks :)
Just finished learning the whole today right now..... Being Trying from early morning today... It's been 7 hours... I am having a headache now.. anyone thanks man you did a wonderful job with this one
You Sir, are a God send.In n ylife I've picked up the guitar every now and then.I am dedicating the next 7 days to learning this song.Im going to build up a catalogue of several technically difficult tunes from radiohead. (As I think they are brilliant).I am going to learn them.THANK YOU DO MUCH FOR TSKING THE TIME TO HELP PEOPLE LIKE NE .THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Guess I’ll never be able to play this cause my fingers just don’t bend that way
This was actually one of the first songs I learned to play completely. It was around the time the album came out and I was about 15. I stopped playing though for years, just recently picking it up again. Now I find this way harder to learn than when I was a kid. I'll get it though
must learn, my brain is melting
love you man, I couldn't learn this song by myself
I am playing guitar for a year now. It took me full month to learn. Hard work pays off.
This is an excellent lesson. Thank you
amazing lesson! just the kind i was looking for. Practiced like hell, but managed to pull it off the day after. Thank you!
with my 10 dollars guitar is it impossible to play...
Thanks for the great lesson Carl. It would be great if you could do a lesson for 2+2=5. Thanks :)
Hint to those who try to learn this song on guitar - don't use the pick, this song is way easier with fingerpicking.
4:34.
6:18
7:31
I thought I could never play this, but your video made it really easy to me.. you really made me happy
this song destroyed my wirst, thank you, now i cant play guitar! (good tutorial tho)
Picking or chording wrist? That means bad technique. Slow it down and relax.
Parece difícil, mas é só treinar bastante que vai pegando o jeito
Os acordes até são simples, maiores no maior tempo. A mão direita exige técnica de palheta razoável.
Learning this gave me a feeling of satisfaction I never had felt before
Wow, this really helped me a lot playing this song, thanks! Further, not for the beginner, with or without tabs
Clear, motivating, and inspiring lesson.
IN ONE WEEK hdhshh i sont know how fkng get this song, i recommend so much songsterr to practice ( i didnt saw this video yet)
if this a math, i would studying all day long
Thanks for the tutorial "Oz"!
Hold fuck been playing 24years and this is hard!!!
You're a great guitar player, man. Plain and simple. Really appreciate your dedication to teaching guitar.
Thanks for making such a good tutorial man, so accurate
The way you know a song is hard is when even Carl brown makes several mistakes in the video
You see when i saw the video i was like this isn't going to be the lead guitar part it was going to be the rhythm guitar part but when i heard it i paused the video and said "THAT SOUNDS AND LOOKS FUCKING AMAZING!!!"
After almost two years of guitar learning Im going to have an attempt at tackling this.
ayad taha oops i did it in my fifth month
Someday said in comments the guitar was taken from some old classical song, be interesting to hear the source if that's true.
can be played with just fingers, no pick?
try it out.. see if it works
How in the hell is he doing this? This is gonna take me years to learn.
Give it a few months. I’m coming back to this just now after 8 months of playing and this is so much easier than the first time.
@@meltss6630 Thank you. I'm just starting to play guitar, and I thought I could just go into a song without knowing anything more than the first part of "Heart-Shaped Box." I should probably learn the chords before I try.
Grass Man if you’re just starting out, try JustinGuitar on UA-cam or justinguitar.com. He has a really good beginner to advanced course all for free. Covers all the essentials.
What about the solo?!
OMG!!! I play guitar and have been for decades but this is from another planet! Planet Telex perhaps? WOW!
this is one of those songs thats such a fucking bitch early on, but after a few years coming back to this lesson its super easy.
Thanks for the great video. I do have one question: how did you arrive at the eighth note played being an E flat (A string, 6th fret)? From watching 2 HD vids of Thom playing (Glastonbury 2003, Outside Lands 2016) it looks like you're right. Also, when I load the album version in Transcribe and try and get the pitch of that note as best I can tell it's an E flat as well, but there also appears to be a D that sounds right after it. My confusion comes from having the official OK Computer song book from Warner/Chappell, which seems like a very technically accurate transcription, and another Radiohead songbook, also from Warner/Chappell (Jam with Radiohead Vol. 2, but a slightly different transcription), which both list that note as a D (open D string). Many thanks!
Why is a pick used instead of just fingers? The pick seems to make it more complicated
Should I learn to pick from the elbow or the wrist? atm I'm kinda switching between the two and its not very consistent. jumping this many strings quickly is hard for a noob like moi.
Came in here expecting another "No Surprises", "Karma Police" or "Lucky"-esque tutorial...
damn this is harder than I thought
I will get through this, I will get through this...
Sweet just learnt this part keen for the next!!
As long as you know the chord shapes you can get this song just muckin about with it i find... anybody who's a fan of the song will have the notes etched into their brains...kinda like another Radiohead song no surprises
Thank you this really helped!
is thi original version?
One part I can't get: what note is played between that last walk down and the 'you don't remember, you don't remember, why don't you remember my name?' line?
Hi Carl, thanks for this lesson, really the best on UA-cam, clear instructions and very cool songs!
..Unfortunately i've a Classic guitar, and the last part of this lesson it's very hard to learn for me, because the neck of acustic guitars it's more tight than classic.. Thank you, from Italy.
I feel the vibe in my entire body through my fingers thanks to you. ♥
Tough guitar lessons don't last. Tough students do.
i may be able to play guitar but im not a fucking android
Yo any chance you have a tab of this laying around, or the sheet music because I wanna do it for a GCSE exam but you need the sheet/tab to be able to do a song for your performance piece.
110 dislikes are from iOS users!!
I want to learn this song after watching ergo proxy. Who else?
I'm f**in struggling to play the arpeggios in their song Creep no way I can do this. But great video man!
The more you keep trying to play this the more you realize how incredibly difficult it is to play lmfao
Can someone please tell me why this song isnt played fingerstyle?
Thank you very much for your work.Your lesson helped me to learn this song when i was thinking i can never do that
Thank You very much for all your patience an dedication. Awesome lesson. Greetings from Chile
I feel like it is mutch better to use finger picking just me tho
Bro is giving me flash backs to nothing else matters
Thanks so much, with your tutorial and practice, I learned this song in its entirety
Very good tutorial mate, there are some very messy tabs out there on the song. Greetings from England!
