I can’t draw without a photo, I just need a reference. And I have no inspiration without a picture. I want to practice a lot but I don’t have much time because I am 15 and still in school. Does someone has any tips?
Joelle Joelle maybe if you try art books? Some of them teaches how to draw certain things like body parts, animals and clothes. It could help you learn how to start from a basic shape and put details on it until it takes shapes and when you will be used to it you should be fine :)
try searching up art prompts, or even find a noun generator and just drawing whatever comes up, or finding art challenges. That way the "inspiration" part is done for you, at least until you get to the point where you're coming up with things yourself. Also you should get a small sketchbook to bring to school with you and sketch whenever you have free time in class (idk if you have that often, for me I never have time on B days but most of my A day classes are pretty chill), that's when I draw the most. Honestly just sketch whenever you can during the day and maybe set a goal to draw a full piece every saturday or sunday or something like that. hope I can help!
Ava Gessner go to your local library and explore their art section. They have a beginner’s guide to almost everything. Go to the reference librarian and tell them you want to learn how to draw. They will show you the section you need. Thank Also, draw for fun whenever you can! Try to always carry a sketchbook and a pencil bag with what you need.

Rolling your kneedable erasers over your drawing is a fantastic tip! I know one thing I accidentally do half the time is make my guidelines a bit too heavy and dark so this was a nice tip. And I think exploring different mediums is another fantastic tip, I know I would have never in a million years thought about doing charcoal. The thought of it just getting everywhere was not my thing lol but really the soft smokey look you can get from it are beautiful. I really like these kind of videos too where it's like a super chill chat and speed paint.
This is so good and helpful. Right now I'm writing a essay in English class about how i could go back in time to my 5th grade self and tell my old self how to not be as cringey at art. I would tell myself to not use ms paint and use FireAlpaca, to use references and learn anatomy, and tell my young self to not learn how to draw anime yet. As a child I did not understand anatomy at all and I tried to learn anime XD I really was bad

The tips in the video were great and I agree 100% with most of what you said. I just wanted to ad this as another opinion about the social media thing you mentioned. I started early and switched through quite a few art social media and even though I made some great friends I feel like posting my art stunted my growth. My friends have always supported me but we were on either similar levels or used completely different tool so it was difficult to give constructive criticism. And other people either gave me empty praise or told me my art sucked and that I would never be an artist. All the people's opinion got to my head and i also felt an obligation to put all I drew online which just made me feel worse. When i started posting less often and eventually quit I saw immense improvement. It was drawing for myself that made me improve. I do not mean to diminish anyone else's experience, this is just mine.
You can tell someone is a great and original artist by being able to take something away from anything they do. Your videos always inspire me and teach me how to improve
I am taking an art course now and I had NO IDEA what to do with the kneadable eraser, so I am SO glad you talked about it in this video. And I adore your art style! I immediately followed you on Instagram after watching the video. :)
I should definitely do more drawing from life, and now I'm inspired to try watercolor too. I've just been sketching with a regular pencil and haven't bothered with colors at all, but experimenting with colors might make it a little more interesting
This is super helpful to me as a beginner! I'm currently in my experimental stage of art where I want to try everything. Right now I'm trying out watercolor. I'm really liking it so far :)
Ah thank you so much! I'm a beginning artist and I'm going to take up Multimedia arts for college and there's a drawing test for the entrance exam and I will begin to use these tips you've given!!
8:20 This is a very good advice haha! I'm more of a graphite artist but since 2017 (I think), I've been more and more willing to explore other media of art, including those with brush and paint. While it didn't change my love of graphite, it certainly helped to improve my technique and it opened my mind to try new things with graphite (graphite powder for instance or blending with different type of brushes to create misty effects). It sounds like a chore, but it's just so fun to test your skills against something new! I rediscovered the joy of painting (no pun intended) this way and discovered watercolor along the way. The only thing I'd add is to try different kinds of art and not stick to that one thing. Just like you said to draw life and objects, I think that exploring realism if you're really into cartoons (or cartoons if you're into realism!) can only make you grow as an artist. Just an extra tip because I, too, would have liked to know that when I started (long, long ago).
Go to look through all kind of shops. I've found a sketchbook from the company "art creation". It looks extremely like a moleskin, the paper quality is (if you're not a super expert) the same. Just the black cover is a little less smooth, there is no pocket in the back. It's a little different, but the price is a third or even a quarter of a Moleskin-price. It's not a dream, cheeper copies exist. :)
This has helped so much! Thank you! I’ve been drawing people a lot in the past year or two and haven’t focused on animals of any style other than when in my art class we drew animals as our bell ringer. I’m definitely going to to take your advice and draw more of my surroundings. I’ve also been wanting to try painting for a while and my art teacher at school offers painting and I’m hoping to get in that class next year! I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember but taking it seriously would have to be at least 3 or 4 years now and I’ve noticed I’ve improved in my style and what I draw drastically for the better by self teaching myself from UA-cam videos and Christopher Hart books and of course my art teacher
Thank you for painting a tortoise rather than the pretty girl I see way too much of. Pretty females are fine I just hope everyone doesn’t ONLY paint them. Also watercolour is more commonly lightfast and versatile unfortunately art markers fade. And paper is the most important part, with all the media watercolour, Coptic, etc.
I was watching another video about things I wished I knew before drawing, and I got bored really quickly. But with you I just stayed and listened and really liked it
Great tips and very nice drawing! It looks amazing. The thing that I wished I knew was good paper the most. You can use cheap art supply but as long as the paper is semi-good you can make pretty amazing things.
Thanks for the inspiration, got all burnt out from my college requirements recently but now I'm all boosted up to make more art and improve myself even further 💖
You're a fascinating, wonderfu,l bright woman. I'm going to take all your advice and push myself to grow and get out of my rut. This goes without saying your that art is amazing.
So informative and inspiring thank you. Glad you use less copic markers...all those plastics pollute, and watercolour is so much better in the long run. Loved the tip on erasers too.
Like for the tips. Love for how many mixes you made with just a few colors. I find my every day setting intimidating because I don't live in a neat and organized home...but if you say so...
I wish I could tell 10 years old me to go ahead and just draw, that i shouldn't overthink it and only believe in the idea that knowing how to draw or paint is only for people who are naturally gifted of it. Even if you don't see it as a job in the future, it's still amazing to learn something, not because schools requires it, but because you enjoy and relax with it. You shouldnt be too serious. :))
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make videos like this. I've grown so much as an artist since I found the art-side of youtube. You're very inspirational, and your art is beautiful. 💕
Also when using real life references, try to get video reference! Especially for dynamic poses, it helps you understand motion and how the body is moving better. Idk how it works, but when I choose a frame from a youtube video instead of an image from google, my work turns out better and looks less stiff. An artist on youtube (Ethan Becker I think) talks about this and even has challenges!
I recently started an art class by the influence of my stepmother ( I already draw before but I used to think it was useles) and dicovered so many things and how much my art needed to improve, now, I'm 13 and know what watercolors and a Kneaded eraser is! I'm very thankful for that, because my art improved a lot because of that!
You are young and look at the great work you are producing. I wish my younger self, was your younger self. Art can be a difficult road but tech has made it much more viable. Your work is inspiring. KEEP GOING!!
Oh my gosh, alright I just need to start to start with this. I can relate to you in so many ways, I'm still young right now but I have used a lot of these tips you said, like trying different art supplies, social media, a lot of the things you said, and I improved a lot, I will definitely try some of the tips I haven't used yet. I do want to have a career in art, but it's going to be art for what I really want to do with life. I've wanted to be an author for a LONG time and once I realized I was getting into art also I was stuck in the middle of "Oh I can't be an author if I want to do youtube and book illustrations for my job" and "I can definitely not be an artist I want to write books! I have to, it's been my dream job for over 5 years!" then I found out that I could be an illustrator for my own books and since then I've always aspired to keep following those dreams. I've found myself more confident when listening to youtube artists talk about past mistakes and suggestions to improve. Especially since I've found your channel I've been improving a lot and more satisfied with my art, I find that listening to you boosts my confidence in my own art style and makes me believe one day I can accomplish my dreams. I really want to thank you for this, since you have made my journey in art and even writing (even though you aren't even a writer) more possible in a way. Really, your a very inspiring person.
I started this youtube channel with that idea in mind! showing my whole journey from not knowing how to draw and trying all different mediums and stuff.2 years and running. i love hearing my channels purpose in videos :)
I absolutely agree with kneadable erasers, but in my experience they tend to get very sticky over time and are somewhat expensive.. However a couple years ago I started using blue- tac instead (not the exact brand, but similar) and I found it to be just as effective. I thought I’d share it it in case someone doesn’t know where to get kneadable erasers or doesn’t have one at hand :) Very nice video btw, I think beginners will benefit greatly by following your advice
I love your art and videos! I especially love your unique art style! Thank you sooo much for being here on UA-cam! Your videos make me happy and motivated!
I love how your tortoise came out! I don't know what it is about it but it makes me feel happy. I think it has a lot to the do with the colors. And well, the fact that it's a tortoise. I wish I had known it's more than possible to become a professional artist earlier too. (I'm not one yet, but it's a comforting thought since I want to be one) I also wish I knew it's okay to take risks like that. If it doesn't work out you can always fall back on something else. You don't have to be a starving artist for the rest of your life XD
These tips really helped me! I have only been drawing for a year now but sometimes I'm not able to draw because i either don't have any paper or I can't find any drawing tools.
Thanks for this vid! I'm not a beginner but I still found it insightful. I related to the part about markers so hard cause a few months ago was when I stupidly realised that...markers aren't lightfast. It's so obvious but I hadn't given it any thought. And I asked myself why I'm investing so much in expensive brands of what's essentially a sketching medium when I can invest in supplies that are long lasting on paper and more cost effective. I also wish I had known about all the possible art careers when I was younger too. I knew about graphic design and animation but not the different sub groups of design and about illustration jobs. I wish I had known just to be able to convince my mom there's hope for me in art. I told her about animation simply because I knew it was lucrative but not because I actually feel like doing it. And if you're not passionate about something or you don't know what you want to do, it's hard to convince others to have faith in you. Thanks again for the vid, and great work on the painting!: D
My biggest problem is stubbornness. I love drawing from video games, horror movies, and my own creepy characters, and I feel lost and in an art block whenever I try to draw from life. I just find it boring. I like twisting shapes and people into different things and creatures, not drawing what I already see. But if I want to improve on anatomy and lighting, I need to experiment with different media, draw new things, attack my weaknesses and decide on a damn sketchbook and fill it before moving on for once. This channel has helped me come out of my shell and experiment, but now I need to push myself to continue to innovate on my skills. Thank you.
I think I might get a kneadable eraser now, I've heard a few people recommend them so its probably worth it! Also the totoise (or turtle?) is adorable!
Wow, this was super helpful and inspiring! I just stumbled upon this video unexpectedly and I loved it! Definitely subscribing now. Love the turtle, by the way, it's so pretty
I love this! Thanks for sharing on what u wished that u knew as a begginer, because this helped me a lot! I’m pretty sure it did help others too. Thankss ❤️❤️
I was literally taught about kneadable erasers and it took me years to figure out the practical applications past charcoal stuff, haha ^^ don't worry! Thank you for the video. I never feel like I'm anything more than a beginner even though I've already done multiple educational art trainings, but somehow your videos never make me feel bad about that :P one day I'll be a real artist!
I only clicked because yes I am a artist but I’m having a messed up time and don’t know what’s going on with me right now,the tortoise looks like my baby boy which made me smile.
I wish i knew about sharing art on social media when i was in high school. Its now been 4 years, no practice, because i convinced myself that i shouldn't art any more. i have some regrets, is what i'm trying to say.
Oh, dear TYSM for that video, it helps me soooo much! It is exactly what I really need in this moment! You gives me a lot really! I just Love your work and tips!
I'm for sure subscribing, this is my first video that I've seen by you and mostly it takes up to three good job on getting one subscriber really fast! (Meaning me)
I think the best thing I did when I decided to take art more seriously I bought the book How to Draw Anything by Mark Linley. Back then we didn't have anything like UA-cam which really helps.
I LOVE this drawing, i have a baby tortoise, and this looks just like him! This might be my favorite drawing of yours! Do you script your videos? Your narration can be a bit rambly, and you often Repeat yourself. I dont think you need to script the entire video, but a General guide line of what you want to say could make your videos sound more professional.
I just bought some gouache too! I'd love to hear how you're liking it compared to watercolor so far. I wish I had learned a good work ethic as a young artist. I thought I was good because people told me so, I could have studied and practiced much more in highschool. I also would tell myself that you don't need to do things "the right way" . If I had stuck to the kind of drawing i naturally enjoyed instead of trying to jump on the bandwagons I saw, I would be much more skilled by now. Also im sad that no one told you about kneaded erasers, lol, my middle school art teacher made them required

I love your voice so much!!
What sketchbook is that, I really need a sketchbook like that 😊💗
Unfortunately it is a moleskine sketchbook, which means it's really expensive. I usually don't use them but it was on sale so I got it!
And paper is the most important part, with all the media watercolour, Coptic, etc.
meanwhile, profile pic is a cartoon girl 😂😂
I was watching another video about things I wished I knew before drawing, and I got bored really quickly. But with you I just stayed and listened and really liked it
Great tips and very nice drawing! It looks amazing.
The thing that I wished I knew was good paper the most. You can use cheap art supply but as long as the paper is semi-good you can make pretty amazing things.
I’m glad i found this video. Thank you. I also love the way you used colors.
Wow thank you so much! That means a lot 😄
OK you are so nice to listen to! And that is a beautiful tortoise :) thanks for the tips!
Hey great tips and that turtle drawing was truly awesome.
I love ur art ur art is kinda like a cartoony stile and realistic stile and I love it I'm a beginer and I love to watch ur videos!!!!!
Such beautiful art piece you've done
Also when using real life references, try to get video reference! Especially for dynamic poses, it helps you understand motion and how the body is moving better. Idk how it works, but when I choose a frame from a youtube video instead of an image from google, my work turns out better and looks less stiff. An artist on youtube (Ethan Becker I think) talks about this and even has challenges!
I really enjoy your voice overs;; I had my sketchbook out and I was drawing along,, it felt like chatting with a friend
The last tip was so inspirational!! ^-^
I need to do all of these
Oh my gosh, alright I just need to start to start with this.
This is very helpful! Thank you!
So glad i faound this channel, thanks Jel
I started this youtube channel with that idea in mind! showing my whole journey from not knowing how to draw and trying all different mediums and stuff.2 years and running. i love hearing my channels purpose in videos :)
I absolutely agree with kneadable erasers, but in my experience they tend to get very sticky over time and are somewhat expensive.. However a couple years ago I started using blue- tac instead (not the exact brand, but similar) and I found it to be just as effective.
I thought I’d share it it in case someone doesn’t know where to get kneadable erasers or doesn’t have one at hand :)
Very nice video btw, I think beginners will benefit greatly by following your advice
I love your art and videos! I especially love your unique art style! Thank you sooo much for being here on UA-cam! Your videos make me happy and motivated!
Thank you. I’ve really needed to hear that last tip lately
Thank you for these tips, I'm a beginner artist and I feel like this video will help a lot!
As usual just amazing tips and you flipping Crush that painting be crushed it you nailed that biz also your voice is the best
These tips really helped me! I have only been drawing for a year now but sometimes I'm not able to draw because i either don't have any paper or I can't find any drawing tools.
What a beautiful piece! Also, thank you for your advice. You are lovely!
You really have an amazing style in drawing❤
YAY NOW I KNOW THESE THINGS THANKS!!!
I'm glad it helped!
Wow, this drawing is cool, the colors are so bright😊
Great tips, I love your voice it is so ASMR ❤️😂🎀😍
Aaa thank you, haha!
If it sounded ASMR to me I'm afraid I wouldn't be watching. You are much more interesting.
Wow, this was super helpful and inspiring! I just stumbled upon this video unexpectedly and I loved it! Definitely subscribing now. Love the turtle, by the way, it's so pretty
It seems like you’ve improved drastically just in the past few months, too! Your videos are so pleasant and helpful! Love seeing you grow, girl 🌿💕
when you said "it doesn't have to be perfect but just keep on drawing" inspires me a lot. thank you for that. 😊😊😊
I will definitely take some of that advice. Thanks for sharing!
People do still use DA, it's still just as active. Great video and art piece btw^^ You're an inspiration!
I loved watching you paint this. Is such a happy little sketch ❤️❤️❤️
Nice art by the way, you are truly inspiring.
I only clicked because yes I am a artist but I’m having a messed up time and don’t know what’s going on with me right now,the tortoise looks like my baby boy which made me smile.
Drawing from life helped me so much, since I started drawing from life my art had excelled quicker than ever.
OMG I was lost in your painting and wasn't listening to you. Had to replay and watch again 😊
I love the video and your art! Would you ever consider making a gouache tutorial? I really want to learn but there aren’t many videos on it...
I wish i knew about sharing art on social media when i was in high school. Its now been 4 years, no practice, because i convinced myself that i shouldn't art any more. i have some regrets, is what i'm trying to say.
This is really helpful. Video Jel
Yasss notification squad 😊😊 tnx 4 the tips/advice and im gonna use it from now on 😊
Oh, dear TYSM for that video, it helps me soooo much! It is exactly what I really need in this moment! You gives me a lot really! I just Love your work and tips!
Aaa I'm so glad to hear that!!
Beautiful work on this lovely peace!😍😘💓
I'M THINK I SHOULD START SKETCHING ENVIRONMENT LIFE ETC... THANKS. THIS WAS A GREAT HELP
