Marcia Funebre Sulla Morta d'un Papagallo - Charles Valentin Morhange Alkan
Featured in the now discontinued Alkan: A Synposium CD
Conducted by Ronald Smith
One Alkan's more humourous works, Funeral March on the Death of a Parrot is said to be satire on the romantic opera composer Rossini, who had an affinity for parrots.
Libretto:
"As-tu déjeuné, Jaco?"
"Et de quoi?"
"Ah!"
Have you eaten, Jaco?
And what?
Ah!!
The fact that a piece like this exists just makes me smile. Maybe his neighbor hid his spare key in Jaco's food tray without his knowing it.
Wow Alkan just made my day! I have currently a major depression and have been meditating the entire night, then I went here! Oh man, just that approach to life of his, just like the fact that all his other works are called etudes, even the symphony. Nothing is serious. So mindblowing!
How are you now?
It makes me imagine Alkan coming downstairs first thing in the morning, asking Jaco if he's eaten yet, only to find him still and lifeless. :(
"Look, matey, I know a dead parrot when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now."
When my daughter was just a little girl of four years of age ,she fell in love with this piece .It was our custom on Sunday afternoons to indulge in classical music. Her dad was not a fan ;so it was our treat alone . She died at the age of 19 in 2001, and it has taken me 18 years to find the courage to listen to this .I am smiling, which is something of a shock for me .
oh damn, my condonlences.
Yes this piece lead to the rediscovery of Alkan, when Alfred Hitchcock was looking for a theme for his TV show ( he ended up with the March of the Marionettes) Ronald Smith and Raymond Lowenthal caught on very fast and got the ball rolling, Hamelin and Ogdon put things in overdrive.. See the truly great
lectures here by Raymond Lowenthal all 20 parts to grasp Alkan in full..
Alkan puts others like Sorabji and Scriabin into better perspective.
Ahead of his time!! Almost forgotten !
Reminds one of PDQ Bach's Iphigenia in Brooklyn.
Yes this is a great piece of music and characteristic of the composer's most intelligent writing. It's also very valuable as one of the few examples of Alkan's ensemble/orchestral writing. It was conducted by Mark Fitzgerald though, not Ronald Smith. If only we could find his B minor Symphony!
Thanks for posting!
Very unusual - unlike Chopin's, Beethoven's and Saёns's orchestral works! So faschinating and... hilarious!
I reckon Alkan would've loved Monty Python
AW HOW CUTE!
This piece reminds me of Catullus’ carmina 3, where he “mourns” the death of his love’s sparrow 😂
so good wtf
I'm addicted. xD
彼の真なる交響曲が見つからない事は大変な損失であります。戦火で失われていないことを祈るばかり
As-tu dejeune, Jacquot?? et de quoi??
epic
nice! though a still of the sheet is kind of useless oO hahaha
