How to Save / Export Photoshop File to GIF File | QUALITY VS. FILE SIZE Explained

1. Click on "File"
2. Select "Save for Web"
3. Preview my video description & settings below for best quality vs. file size.
4. Click "Preview" at the bottom left to view it on the web or click "Save" at the bottom right to save your file.
5. Locate to save file & open it to preview your work!

Preset: Select "GIF 128 Dithered" - this will change to "Unnamed" when edited
File: GIF
Selective
Diffusion
Transparency Box: Checked
No Transparency Dither
Interlaced Box: Checked (Deselect to decrease file size, although you will lose quality)
Colors: 256 (Select 128 to decrease file size, although you will lose quality)
Dither: 88% (Best options are 70% to 90%)
Matte: Blank
Amount: Blank
Web Snap: 0% (Adjust to decrease file size, rapidly loses quality)
Lossy: Blank
Convert to sRGB Box: Checked
Preview: Monitor Color
Metadata: All
Color Table: Automatically populates
Image size: Your Choice
Percent: 100%
Quality: Bicubic Sharper
Looping Options: Forever
Thank you for this video. As an update, the newer versions of Photoshop consolidated these steps in the Export option under File, but you can still use the shortcut keys.
One thing I stumbled upon on mine was, for SOME reason, mine wasn't set to forever looping. It took me a good long time to figure that out, but for anyone else dealing with that, there is a dialogue box at the bottom of that menu that deals with looping! Thanks so much for this tutorial, it was IMMENSELY helpful!
Thanks for this. I'm exporting GIFs almost daily from After Effects but needed to use PS to export with alpha channel. Thanks to this I now know what makes my GIFS so ridiculously big. Cheers!

I don't know what the fuck I did wrong but when the GIF is in Photoshop it's fine but when it exports the images stay visible and the animation keeps playing. Probably won't respond but it would be great if u could...

Im making an animated layover for a twitch and the quality dropped so much its absolutely unusable.. tried everything on the video, been messing with it a while and nothing fixes it, it exports as a pixeled mess places that had a fade effect look like they were made with the spray tool on mspaint
sometimes it looks like its gonna export is a bit better quality, if i click "original" then back to "optimised" it shows up as the pixely mspaint mess, it blows!
I'm sorry to hear. I've had a similar issue to this before when I tried making the background invisible so it was just a floating GIF file. Two questions, what color background are you using (also, is it invisible?) And how many frames total is the file?
keep in mind gif's are limited to max 256 colors as I understand it, thus comparing to a full color animation / video will always look a lot worse and in some cases is more obvious.
@@markus4979 yeah I just had never had it to that degree but it was probably due to my color choices we decided to export a png and leave it at that, thanks for the reply tho!
The original on mine is so beautifull made it my self but on export settings it looks absolute shit its a shame that after effects cant export good quality gif

Is there any way to export the gif as the original version and not the optimized version?
At the top left corner of the "save for web" settings theres the "original" option beside "optimized." It raises the file size drastically but it looks good

That sounds more like a timeline issue on your gif, do you know how to extend the times of each frame?
CyberPunk no but I can figure it out somehow. The frame like doesn’t disappear.
So doing this export process from PS, my GIF is 7 seconds long, 712x480 in size, and over 18 megabytes. 😕
Well, technically you change the length of your animation VIA the timeline & frame manipulation, but, if you have a question (and or) want suggestions on your file, feel free to ask! I'll do the best I can to guide you correctly.
@@Metastrator Thanks. I found if I change the size to 350 wide that chunks the size down quite a bit.

Yes, you can always check imgur or other sites as well and download a few and right click them -> check their properties as well!
