As for why Bill Murray inducted George The Animal Steele, the two had acted together in Tim Burton's biographical comedy Ed Wood the year before. They wound up becoming friends. Murray couldn't attend the ceremony in person because he was filming the comedy Larger Than Life, in which his character inherits an elephant from his dead father.
HOF was really different back in those days-they used to hire a really cheap venue, made no effort with the room they were in or production values & after the next year's event they didn't even bother doing it again for six or seven years.
darkashtar I like burton when he doesn’t remake something with Johnny depp and his wife. He’s one of the most creative directors and I liked Batman, beetlejuice and big fish movies
Fun Fact: In Shawn’s entrance, at the start of it, which is cut from the Network version, he went over to the throne and tried on the crown, revealing that it was too big on him. Thus, spoiling that he wasn’t going to win, Mabel was.
i was there and remember him doing that. i remember the crown sliding to the side of his head. but at 12 i was too young to make the connection that it was a sign he wasn't going to win
The paid promotion was very fun. Brian is underrated in his creativity and under appreciated with his effort, love all the reviews and lists, maybe consider posting the PPV reviews on to an audio platform, you discribe in enough detail that the video is optional
This PPV actually holds a special place in my heart. I was 10 and a huge WWF fan but my parents wouldn't spend money on a ppv. I saved up my allowance for months, had my dad drive me to the cable company to rent a cable box for 1 day, and bought this PPV. Everything in this show was perfect to me through my rose colored glasses.
Actually, the two Taker fans at ringside did play a part a little later in the whole build to the casket match with Kama at Summerslam. During a match, the guy laid a funeral wreath at ringside for Kama and Kama ripped it up. The dude went to pick up the pieces and Kama then went and beat the hell outta the dude while his lady watched in stunned horror. So in addition to getting what was left of the urn back from Kama, that attack added extra fuel to the fire for the Deadman
You my kind Sir, and hearing Brian pronounce your name, has got me now wanting to become a Patreon Backer just to possibly hear my name announced one day!!
King Mabel was a disaster, I wish they would have had savio vs taker because Taker actually has a history of having really good matches with him, especially in the days when savio was basically his old TNT ninja gimmick but with a mask. After leaving WWF savio would go on to form IWA in his native Puerto Rico and discover talent like Judas Messiah aka Mil Muertes and other lesser known but still iconic to the island such has Shane the Glamour boy,Andy Anderson, Mikael Judas, he gave guys like Chet Jablonsky and Flash Flanagan a home and Yes! We were the first place Daniel Bryan went to when he got kicked out of the wwe for chocking a guy with his own tie.
Makes sense that Taker would have good matches with Savio, they were BSK together and Taker always went out of his way to pull out all the stops for his buddies, everyone from Rikishi to Kane and Yokozuna.
Was unfamiliar with Vega's work in Puerto Rico until I did a search and saw him wrestling against the infamous Mr. Pogo. Wild stuff, Puerto Rican wrestling is criminally overlooked.

"Combined Bobby Heenan and Drive Time Radio" perfect description. WWF decided to switch Dok to a good guy interviewer. He was starting to go down Rob Bartlett Boulevard but they saved him. He ended up working out.

Big Daddy V was almost a good gimmick, but he was so utterly horrendous and dangerous as a worker by that point that he was beyond salvageable as a talent.
In the early UFC, it was a tournament & guys legit fought either 3 or 4 times a night. & I myself watched Chris Jericho wrestle 3 matches in one night.
Brian, there was one other guy who used the company's name on their attire. Koko B. Ware had the WWF initials on the back of his tights during WrestleMania IV.
I am pretty sure that Vega going 4 matches in one night was intended as a "fuck you" to Randy Savage as they were openly promoting it as a record, despite Wrestlemania 4 existing
I feel bad for mable. He may have been wreckless but they gave him such an outdated gimmick how could anyone like that. That's not what a rapper looked like in 95 lol.
The reason why Bob Holly has the WWF logo on his trunks is because he's a NASCAR driver. I bet WWF was one of his main sponsors at the time, so he'd put the WWF logo front and center on his race car, his racing suit, and his wrestling trunks. If Dale Earnhardt Jr was a wrestler he'd have had Budweiser, AMP energy drink, National Guard, or whatever his sponsor was at the time on his wrestling trunks just like Bob Spark Plug Holly.
Backlund was one of my favourite wrestlers from this time. When I was 10 or so, seeing him ragdoll other guys, no costume gimmick, just a madman. Staring at his shaking hands reveling in the aftermath always sent real chills through me. Look, I was 10, all I knew about wrestling was a plush Hogan doll that me and my brothers used to pound on all the time before turning on each other. I was into all the bottom of the barrel guys. Duke the Dumpster? yup. IRS? Loved to hate him. Atom(Adam?) Bomb? I thought he could beat Taker. Doink? Down with it. Crush, Tatanka, BamBam and Luna, loved all of it Lucky for me, and all of us, Attitude was just around the corner.....
Lmao I know this comment is a couple years old but I was literally the same age and loved the same aspects you did! I used to have a toy briefcase where I put tape on it and wrote "IRS" on it lol. We grew up in the best time IMO. Just a side note I loved the Backlund/Bret Hart rivalry back in the day.
In retrospect, they should have switched Savio and Shawn Micheals in the tournament. They could have had Razor and Shawn have a segment together, which would have helped add even more build to their Summerslam match.
Dude, I was 14 when this went on. Imagine this being the only thing to look forward to other than WCW Saturday night in 1995, while there's no internet and extremely limited wrestling media options. It was skin to playing Madden today, because its the only option. THANK GOD for Shawn vs Bret, and for the nWo...
I was 9 years old in 1995 and watched this pay per view live and shawn michaels was my favorite wrestler just disappointed he didn't win the king of the ring.
Good review BZ, however, as an actual friend of Nelson and Bobby ( Mabel and Mo), you and the rest of the world didn't know the REAL reason that Mabel won the King of the Ring tournament!!!! Vince LOVED Nelson and as a side note, I was sitting next to him when Vinny Mac told him (on speaker phone) that we would make him a millionaire.......if he would stop smoking marijuana, as he was hitting a joint. They were going to put the WWF title on him, but he couldn't and wouldn't stop smoking. Once AGAIN......Vince LOVED Nelson.
hey brian, the reason bill murray was on the elephant, was because he had a movie coming out called Larger Than Life. the movie was about him inheriting a elephant, which he has to get across the country to sell to a zoo. so the movie has him hitch hiking across america with a elephant.
I had No Mercy UK on VHS as a kid. It might even have been the first PPV I ever saw. Will never forget it. I think I watched it a few years ago and in hindsight, Triple H vs. Taker vs. Steve Austin was not as good of a main event as it should have been, and the undercard was mostly terrible. But whatever, it had Kane and I thought Kane was the best. Also Shane McMahon, EUROPEAN CHAMPION.
I love that at this point they were so done with the Lex Express that he couldn’t even qualify for a quarterfinal match in this tournament. Holy shit what a burial from 1993 to 1995
In the subject of WM21, in hindsight, the most important aspect of the PPV was the crowning of Cena and Batista. At the time, though, what really mattered at least to me was Angle vs. HBK, one of the all-time great WM matches. And it also had the first MITB ladder match, and the start of a really good feud between Randy Orton and The Undertaker.
My Boy Tío Savio Vega! Dude could always work a good match and Was very athletic for his frame , Very Humble man too :) Also Hugo Savinovich with Carlos Cabrera on spanish commentary Are always great
17:00 - I’m surprised it got two. I remember reading an old review of the PPV where the reviewer got straight up indignant that Mabel pinned Taker. At that point he just gave up.
If Gable wins, it could help give him the push he needs. But if Baron wins. He'll prob just be like any other heel winner lately. Just end up going no where then the gimmick is dropped.
Dok Hendrix called a few episodes of Raw around this time too, he was possibly the second-worst regular commentator WWE ever had (the number one spot goes to Rob Bartlett).
Bill Murray and George Steele were in _Ed Wood_ together in 1994, and Murray was presumably working on _Larger than Life_ (which involved an elephant) when his induction was filmed.
1995 had it's moments but it was such a mess of bad decisions. Sure, it's easy to say that now, but this tournament was a great example of how shit it was.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the cut-from-the-Network classic moment of Shawn Michaels's hubris: He was ticked that he wasn't going all the way so he tried on the crown to demonstrate it couldn't possibly fit him

Quick translation of what the French announce team was saying in that clip :
Ray Rougeau: *something something* bring Euro Disney to the United States !
Jean Brassard: It's an excellent idea !
Ray Rougeau: It's completely crazy.
Jean Brassard: No, not at all !
Vince McMahon: HAHAHAHA !!
A little fact about HBK at this event, he put the crown on his head which was way too big, making it clear as day that Mabel was going to win.
Damn Shawn, it's almost as bad as the dooblie-doo Jake the Snake did before his blindfold match. Though at least that ended up producing one of the funniest moments in any OSW videos
duffman18 what did make Roberts do before blindfold match?
@@speedy932key4 well they both wore big black bags over their heads, and Jake put his hand underneath the bag to touch his face and it revealed the viewing slot in the bag because you could see his hand through it. It was like a black mesh, so without the reveal he did it just looked like the whole bag was solid cloth
@@duffman18 oh, I see.
@@duffman18 ah I see you're a man of culture aswell
I love this channel.
Even the commercials are engaging and entertaining...
I love how visible ECW’s hat guy was in the entire show
They chanted ECW during the show
"Combined Bobby Heenan and Drive Time Radio" perfect description. WWF decided to switch Dok to a good guy interviewer. He was starting to go down Rob Bartlett Boulevard but they saved him. He ended up working out.
Doesn't young Brian knowing about the Xbox one messes with the space-time continuum?
Good
@Rich Affinito someone took the joke seriously.
Koko B. Ware had “WWF” on the back of his tights at one point
Good call. He wore those tights at WrestleMania IV.
@@jbizz80 And at the 1988 Survivor Series.
Gotta represent the Brand You're wrestling for 🤷♂️
Whenever I hear Owen Harts name i always think of what a great wrestler he was and the matches he would have put on if he hadn't suffered that terrible accident. RIP Owen
Honestly had no idea Retromania Wrestling was coming out till this commercial. Cant wait for it now.
Wow what's worse Bret kicking out of 3 piledrivers or Ultimate Warrior kicking out of 5 Macho Man elbows?
Bret, since the piledriver is a legitimately dangerous move.
Savage has legitimately collapsed people's lungs (i.e. wcw referee) with the flying elbow! Its a dangerous move!
@@superstarreviews9937 The ref was not a trained wrestler and didn't know how to take the elbow properly. Not Savage's fault.
Mitch Colburn what a stupid fuckin thing to say! First.. referees ARE trained, how to take bumps and moves, especially at the wcw level! And even if they weren't...trained to do WHAT exactly?! Lay on the mat and wait for the move?! He wasn't taking a hurricarana! He was just supposed to lay there! Savage fucked it up! And even aknowleged it and apologized!
Bret. The Warrior has the character of a superhuman thing that takes a lot of punishment. Bret's a skilled grappler who knows what he is doing but is still joe smoo physically. he shouldn't be kicking out of getting dropped on his head three times by the King of the Piledriver.
Oh boy! The birth of Austin 3:16....
...that's next year's one, isn't it? Which one is this? Oh, right. King Mabel and the Kiss My Foot match. (sigh)
And yet fans love to shit on Diesel as the "worst drawing champ" but the company has shows like this, no wonder people weren't watching at the time
@Chris Terry Bam Bam wasn't a bad wrestler though..
@Chris Terry Honestly, all of the PPV was a case of 'Good Workers, But Booked Horribly', not that people like Savio Vega were going to have 5 star matches, but people like him and Godfather/Kama were at least good in the ring.
@@thatguy3718 I was....thats why I defend the Attitude Era against younger geeks. "Meh, AE was overrated and it sucks" Kids, watch this video, THIS is what proceeded the AE.
@@ReflectionOfPerfection Well, the AE is overrated and quite often sucked. And I lived (and sometimes suffered) through 1995 and 1996.
Also, it is unfair to put up this event as if everything at that time was like this.
Wished Mabel was called Big Daddy V back than. So he would be called *King Daddy V.*
Id pay top dollar back then if that was the case.
Or big daddy king v
What about king daddy, king daddy II, king daddy III and king daddy IV?
Karl Smee Mabel ate them.
Karl Smee they’re in the same purgatory as EC1 & EC2, but at least they aren’t -buried- booked in hell like EC3 :P
Poor Mabel. He was more charismatic as Vissera and Big Daddy V.
wstine79 all of those names are the same wrestlers dumb fuck
No he wasn't. He was the same you just liked the looks better. Mable sucked and hurt people
@@eeeeewewew Both were the shit. (Heal) Mable looked more menacing.
Big Daddy V was almost a good gimmick, but he was so utterly horrendous and dangerous as a worker by that point that he was beyond salvageable as a talent.
He sucked shit and was a dangerous worker. That's why his push died off

Brian Zane reviewing one of the worst pay-per-views the WWE has ever produced. I'm hyped!
I love enjoying watching these Classic PPV Reviews
Wow Savio Vega worked 4 times? Thats wild
In the early UFC, it was a tournament & guys legit fought either 3 or 4 times a night. & I myself watched Chris Jericho wrestle 3 matches in one night.
Randy Savage worked 4 times at WrestleMania IV
@@ManiaxOnYT And the Rock worked for times at Survivor Series '98.
Big Hoss is back! and announcer/tuxedo guy! Great stuff as always Brian, love your content and especially these classic PPV reviews.
Brian, there was one other guy who used the company's name on their attire. Koko B. Ware had the WWF initials on the back of his tights during WrestleMania IV.
19:27 for those who didn't get it...
Number 15 Burger King foot lettuce
I am pretty sure that Vega going 4 matches in one night was intended as a "fuck you" to Randy Savage as they were openly promoting it as a record, despite Wrestlemania 4 existing

I feel bad for mable. He may have been wreckless but they gave him such an outdated gimmick how could anyone like that. That's not what a rapper looked like in 95 lol.
Missy Elliot wasn't till later, he was ahead if his time
Of course, they did. Look at M.C. Hammer...
Thats why i couldn't take heel MoM seriously. The Gangstas in ECW and SMW got it right, Vince didnt
@@volksfestchecker838 by 95 Hammer was onto his gangster phase
Didn't know Hammer had a gansta phase. I do know he had a broke phase though.
Crush, Tatanka, BamBam and Luna, loved all of it
Lucky for me, and all of us, Attitude was just around the corner.....
Lol I was two but in my soul I was already a fan
@LouSassoleSledgecock_III Yeah but u didn't know wtf u were watching not at 2.
I was 9 years old in 1995 and watched this pay per view live and shawn michaels was my favorite wrestler just disappointed he didn't win the king of the ring.
The old reviews were so much fun
I love the small detail that young Brian Zane is in 4:3 aspect ratio.
Undertaker's first pinfall loss since Tuesday in Texas (1991)
Well, the only loss between Tuesday in Texas and this was to Yoko in a casket match at the 1994 Royal Rumble.
hey brian, the reason bill murray was on the elephant, was because he had a movie coming out called Larger Than Life. the movie was about him inheriting a elephant, which he has to get across the country to sell to a zoo. so the movie has him hitch hiking across america with a elephant.

please do WWF No Mercy 1999 better known as No Mercy UK
The two No Mercys were just five months apart! Confusing much?
@Bryan Mack people always forgot the First No Mercy
I had No Mercy UK on VHS as a kid. It might even have been the first PPV I ever saw. Will never forget it. I think I watched it a few years ago and in hindsight, Triple H vs. Taker vs. Steve Austin was not as good of a main event as it should have been, and the undercard was mostly terrible. But whatever, it had Kane and I thought Kane was the best. Also Shane McMahon, EUROPEAN CHAMPION.

And Brian straight lumps him in as one of the shittiest gimmicks of the time hahaha
I LOVE your commercials, man! Even I don't skip those!
Dude could always work a good match and Was very athletic for his frame , Very Humble man too :) Also Hugo Savinovich with Carlos Cabrera on spanish commentary Are always great
Does Man Mountain Rock count? He didn't quite wear the WWF logo as part of his gimmick, but that logo guitar kinda ruled.
Do you know?
Yeah, dude, me neither.
17:00 - I’m surprised it got two. I remember reading an old review of the PPV where the reviewer got straight up indignant that Mabel pinned Taker. At that point he just gave up.
I know it's not the company logo, but Funaki wore the SmackDown logo on his trunks.
Love the retromania ad. Please tell me you'll be in the game as a manager
The New Generation...ugh
I'm surprised you didn't mention the cut-from-the-Network classic moment of Shawn Michaels's hubris:
He was ticked that he wasn't going all the way so he tried on the crown to demonstrate it couldn't possibly fit him
Michael Hayes doing commentary......man, that was bad
Not nearly enough doots, doots or even doots.
He was insufferable, another of many reasons this PPV sucked.
It’s going to be a bbaaadddd evening.
I hated Doc Hendrix back then
I loved when the macho Man , was like If you told me that yokozuna weighed a thousand pounds I'd be likely to believe you , it was so cheesy , I loved it

Always remember watching that Raw when they turned HBK face, however most of the crowd that night in Poughkeepsie were actually cheering for Sid. As most WWF fans usually did.
Does The Miz count of having the WWE logo even though its upside down?
Yes. He does the same thing with the WWE microphones whenever he cuts a promo, literally turning the logo on them upside down.
If it's upside down it's not the same logo.
how can you not remember koko wearing the wwf logo? oh right it's blurred out
No one from the Kliq wanted to fight Mable.. That's why Shawn was timed out and Razor had "An Injury" lol
Interesting conspiracy theory. It’s believable.
As hbk and hhh would anti kayfabe in 1997, who booked this crap?
The only thing is.. Nash did face Mable later that year and copped that giant sit, even after he told Mable not to. Just imagine the other guys saying "We told ya man.."
Was this before or after Mabel legitimately broke Undertaker's orbital bone? I wouldn't blame the Kliq for not wanting to work with that lump.
