      When Zane replayed Orndoff’s intro in the view, the look on his face said it all of what you were going to expect from that match with the Renegade, he had that look on his face of “I can’t believe that I have to sell and put this MFer over.”

    My theory on Orndorf getting the cheers ... Much like Hog/Road Wild, this audience could have been made up of casual fans who might have mistaken the good vs bad guy or just cheered based on who appealed most to them. Imagine showing up and seeing Jimmy Hart, known villain for years and years, managing a rip-off of the Ultimate Warrior against a guy who was at times a big time baby face in WWE, and who could clearly wrestle better than his opponent. Optics suggest Orndorf was the face. Just a thought.

    • @maxdecphoenix

      a dubious proposition i think. I can't really believe that non-WCW-fans are going to pay admission to go stand in the sand under the hot ass, direct sun for 3-hours in enough numbers to audibly throw off the expected heel/face dynamic. I mean i'm sure as shit not going to go pay $40 to stand in the blistering sun to watch basketball. Not even the globe-trotters.
      Another point is this phenomena was only noticed in *this* match. Had they been also booing Jim Duggan and Hulk Hogan in their matches, while cheering harlem heat (notorious heels at the time) and Vader, then maybe, but otherwise Occam's Razor dictates that we just accept the simplest explanation. Which is, as Brian said, people had simply soured on Renegade and were voicing that they just wanted him gone (or repackaged). Good day.

    • @roodboy606
      @roodboy606 3 роки тому +1

      @@maxdecphoenix your argument makes no sense. You’re saying the fans were smart but why would casual fans boo historical baby face hogan or cheer heel Harlem heat? That’s something smart marks would do.
      They were cheering for the name they recognized, even chanting his nickname. Also I’m pretty sure the show was papered given the “hundreds of thousands” in attendance which lends to supporting OPs theory.

    Important note is that this is the first time WCW did a steel cage match where you could "escape the cage" to get the win. That had been a WWF standard, but WCW always had their cage matches end with pinfall or submission. The reason for the change is that Vader refused to do a pinfall job for Hogan, because Hogan refused to do the same for Vader when it was proposed they exchange wins to keep the feud going.

      Lol no doubt. Sometimes it pays off when you push a guy who's green as fuck. (Goldberg) Renegade is on the other side of that. Personally, even as a kid I hated Goldberg and wished they'd just give that push to a more deserving wrestler. WCW was def big enough at the time to make that work. It's just a shame when you see what happened to the man playing Renegade. He was put in a position to completely fail, and it really wasn't his fault. In sensible, non cocaine enhanced booking, he comes up as a low card babyface while learning how to work. In the process he can find a character and gimmick that works for him. There's literally not one wrestler in the world that could've gotten over as a fake Ultimate Warrior. I mean, FREAKING KANE was a joke playing a fake character before he found his calling

    I was at this event. It was a long, crazy hot day in OC. I want to say this was WCW's first show ever in Orange County, and possibly the first of two (there was a Nitro in Irvine in 2000 I believe). So this wasn't a hotbed for WCW and while there were a few die hards, I think for the most part that many of the people there were more interested in the fact there was this big event on the beach as opposed to the actual matches. Of course they knew the big names like Hogan, Savage and Flair (WWF/E ran Anaheim frequently and in fact my first live WWF event was headlined by a Hogan/Flair main event).

    WCW putting Renegade in matches against Arn and then even having Mr. Wonderful dust off his wrestling boots, was WCW's last ditch efforts to get something out of Renegade. It's pretty plain to see they were using him as channel surfing bait. Back in '95 you would just mindlessly flip thru the channels. So with WWE (WWF at the time) being in and out of the Ultimate Warrior business at the time, what better way to have viewers stop on your show then to make them wonder if they just saw Warrior while flipping thru. But them going to Orndorff for this spot tells you all you need to know. Orndorff was the guy teaching new up and coming wrestlers at the power plant. Him needing to have a match with Renegade tells you how things were going at this point. I also think Paul was getting the cheers due to him not having wrestled in so long, but also from a nostalgic standpoint. He was a big deal as a heel (hey that rhymes!) back in the early days of Hulkamania running wild! I'm sure people in the crowd were feeling that.

    Why is it hard to do an outside match: nature. First it could rain - so they have to do it with wildly known sunny weather. Then, anyone who ever worked outside knows how much more difficult it is to work in hot weather. Next, add how much more additionally draining working in the direct sun. Lastly, it must be more difficult to produce good video bc of the changing shadows caused by the movement of the sun.
