I've been homeless for 7 years, thankfully in a reliable car. But I have a survival guide draft published, and am close to a hacker space called Hacker Dojo in Mountain View, CA... came out to Sacramento Valley a year ago where housing is very affordable, pretty close to being able to secure some with one entry level kitchen job. In my life going forward stuff like this is how I'll give charity, in a past life I was a software engineer who could generate great wealth. So I hope I can do big projects like building these on the weekend. I can't move much now but I'm taking notes and getting prepared. Thanks for sharing this great inspiration.

I was raised to have respect and love for all people, no matter their situation in life, but as the situation get worse and worse (just had to replace my Ford's fuel filler tube because a tweaker cut it off to steal 30 gallons of fuel a couple nights ago) I've found myself losing my humanity more and more. I have a harder time seeing these people as people when that type of thing happens, but it's important to understand what it takes to drive a person to do things like that. I've never had to fight for my survival, I've never faced a cold night without a warm bed waiting for me, unless it was my choice, and even then I had the resources to be prepared. Every person started out as a baby whose done nothing wrong and could go any direction in life, and sometimes people go a direction that isn't good for them, whether they had any power in it or not. Whatever this gentleman's story is, you changed it for the better and likely changed the course of his life, even if it means just to be more comfortable and safe. I'm not a religious fellow, but if someone's faith can cause beautiful things like this to happen, that's definitely a good thing and I'm here for it. Endless applause, I hope your neighbor loves his amazing cart and in turn is a bit more respectful of the space you share together.

I came back to give my suggestions. I think the wheel brackets need to be bigger, so it gives a bit more clearance when he is pushing the cart around. Also if the handle was moved in so he fits under the cover better. I think you should have test fit the tarp before welding the hoop frames in position. I would find a clear trap to put around the walking area, so the rain isn't a problem moving around all the time. I love the extra work you put into this. Cutting and notching each side brace instead of one pipe along each hoop. Made it harder to stretch the frame to get to most coverage from the tarp. And the plates with his name, no one can say it's not his. Can I get one please. I'm only in Vancouver so depending on how far from the boarder, could make something work. I have been trying to get someone to help me save my own money so I can build a bicycle camper. But no one cares, no one wants me here but doesn't want to help. And we are the problem.
Making the front wheel removable and adding a trailer arm, yes this could be pulled by any bicycle. As long as the bike has the right gearing or legs of steel.

Unique project for an all too common situation.Looks like something a missionary would use it’s not feasible for a fuel powered vehicle. I would recommend making the roof canvas wider so as to cover to the ground maybe in 3 overlapping pieces such as top cover, left and right side panels this would be useful for reducing both rain splash and wind spray. And if you want to reduce weight or cost pvc pipe can be readily bent for the roof bows, not to mention making future repairs cost effective... Also make sure you use actual water proof tarping as the woven "aka blue tarps" are not waterproof. You can use a piece of pipe for each side for tarp tensioning (like how they do the pipe on the end of cold weather tarp covered storage sheds doors)
Just watched it good job whats the measurements wideth , lenght, height, wondering about some of those wagons they sell at Home Depo, Lowes , ect. Could have been used for the base.
I am an 82 yr old Christian man, but I will not give beggars money because way too many of them buy booze and cigarettes with the money ... BUT.. if a person says they are hungry, I will buy them a meal.. I'm retired living on social security and a small VA disability check, so I don't have a lot to offer, but if asked for help I will do what I can afford ..
I find it good to help People, but i think the design of the plan-waggon is suboptimal. 1. it should be a safe space for the homeless so it should be a closed cabin 2. It should be big enough to live in. In Germany Homeless-Boxes will build on base of 2 EuroPaletts 120x80 cm and a height of 200cm. 3. It should have Roofpipes to collect water 4. It should have a Weel Lock to prevent that kids or bad people push the home down the hill or so.... 5. It should be insulated to prevent heat and frost
You have a great heart, but you made the thing heavy, and you didn't provide a complete shelter for him. The roof is great, but it doesn't have sides to block the wind, or hold in heat. If he stays around the neighborhood with it, you'll see how he uses it and you'll see how you can improve it for him.
Praise God! It's true what you say... love your neighbor! That being said, I'm not seeing the practicality of your invention. It's too heavy, hard to move, and does not provide adequate shelter from the elements... I'm sure the next iteration will be better! 😊
@motomule yo, as a former homeless person, I applaud your intent. But that is not long enough for him to lay out in. I lived in a car with all the passenger seats out and barely fit, so believe when I say the inability to stretch out will matter. It may seem minor to you, but then, you won't be sleeping in it.
@ObsoletePencil I was trying to keep the whole cart as small as possible so that he wouldn't feel intimidated by pushing it around town. I admit that I have zero experience being homeless, I live in an RV trailer, some might consider that homeless, but I consider it a home. You could be correct, it could be too small. If time shows that to be the case, I will gladly modify it for him.

Unfortunately, this is a waste of time because mobile homes aren't something the homeless are typically interested in-hence the term "homeless." It likely won't even last a year. Instead of temporary symbolic gestures, you should focus on providing real, long-term solutions.
Homeless people are not all alike. They are not NPCs. They are first person player characters each on their own unique adventure, just like you and me. This cart IS a real, long term solution. You gotta see the problem being solved.
William While some “homeless” people could be given 10 million dollars, enough to solve most people’s problems, and be homeless and penniless in a week a temporary solution could help others make it to the long term solution. “Homelessness” is a complicated situation that varies with every individual. All or nothing attitude doesn’t solve the issue either. Very few will be capable of solving all of the problem. Anything that helps someone not go hungry, or improves their situation even in the short term is not a waste of time.

You should have filled the big cooler with food and water and small cooler with socks and whatever.
The blanket was too big.... I figured the big cooler could be used to keep clothing type things dry.

If you cannot stop a flood with a broom then you must understand that broom is in the analogy to making a better cart for somebody to push around because they're homeless I see this all the time I see people kind-hearted thoughtful engineers even trying to create spaces for the homeless this is a antithetical and a negative post prospect it's creating a object authority of acceptance for homelessness
So you cannot stop a flood with a broom and it doesn't matter if you have a thousand brooms the only thing you can do for a flood that you know is coming every year on time at the same time is to create a way for the flood to go now the analogy to that is you objectively reconstruct your society so that you have equitable and not equal but equitable engagement in the balance of the where was all that you all live with

Unfortunately, this is a waste of time because mobile homes aren't something the homeless are typically interested in-hence the term "homeless." It likely won't even last a year. Instead of temporary symbolic gestures, you should focus on providing real, long-term solutions.

Homeless people are not all alike. They are not NPCs. They are first person player characters each on their own unique adventure, just like you and me.
This cart IS a real, long term solution. You gotta see the problem being solved.

While some “homeless” people could be given 10 million dollars, enough to solve most people’s problems, and be homeless and penniless in a week a temporary solution could help others make it to the long term solution.
“Homelessness” is a complicated situation that varies with every individual.
All or nothing attitude doesn’t solve the issue either.
Very few will be capable of solving all of the problem.
Anything that helps someone not go hungry, or improves their situation even in the short term is not a waste of time.
