She deserves her money and it shouldn't be limited to worker's comp

"Lawyers for Newport News Public Schools had tried to block the lawsuit, arguing that Zwerner was eligible only for workers’ compensation. The school board maintained that Zwerner’s injuries were directly related to her job and therefore covered under workers’ compensation, which provides up to nearly 10 years pay and lifetime medical care for injuries.
Zwerner’s attorneys countered that workers’ compensation doesn’t apply because a first-grade teacher would never anticipate getting shot: “It was not an actual risk of her job.”
Hoffman sided with Zwerner, concluding that her injuries “did not arise out of her employment” and therefore did not “fall within the exclusive provisions of workers’ compensation coverage."
The judge wrote: “The danger of being shot by a student is not one that is peculiar or unique to the job of a first-grade teacher.”"

She most likely was bullying him in some way or was singling him out from the glass and demeaning him during class or when no one was around.

Let's not forget that during these past few decades, there have been numerous cases involving female teachers, principals, and coaches who were charged with S.A. against minors and students in Schools.

Okay let's look at some of the facts:
The kid somehow had access to a loaded weapon at home, and he also happened to know at least the basic mechanics of how to use it.
Meanwhile, once the teacher had taken a bullet through her hand and into her chest, she still prioritized getting the rest of the kids out of the classroom and to safety before finally collapsing in the front office. Additionally, she has said nothing against that child in the year following the attack, nor has she blamed him himself in any way - just the family, the school, and the situation.
None of us can say that we know the whole story behind why the child chose to shoot the teacher, and we all know that he was being mistreated somewhere, and failed by both home and school. However if we are looking between the teacher and the parents for someone to take the brunt of the blame, it really does look like the parents have more reason to be investigated than that teacher.
