You got to acknowledge that there are no doors so the heat is entering the inside environment but imagine once it gets doors and Ac unit how much cooler it will be
The building I’m in was owned by an insulation company. All fiberglass, and some of the inside walls aren’t even sheathed. Eight inches of insulation, pole barn over a concrete floor. It stays below 80 on the hottest of days. So, we keep the doors closed when it’s hot.
I work in HVAC and I love foamed houses, the attics are always in the 70s some people even condition the attic! Money well spent, the energy savings are great and it's always an icebox inside
Take the readings at 1pm. And then insert a thermometer in the foam and take the readings. Foam is great but it will also absorb and hold heat if the inside envelope is not cooled properly and ventilated good luck on the build.
As a 40 year builder, I have found the best results are from rigid foam insulation sheets above the sheathing with perlins spacing the metal from the insulation. Finish it off inside with flash & batt (1" close cell spray & rockwool). You won't even know when it's hailing...

The problem with this foam insulation installation is it should never have been in direct contact with exterior sheeting. You need at least a 1" air gap with radiant barrier facing out on foam. This would reflect most of the heat from outside and allow the foam not to heat from conduction.
Spray foam rocks. Just make sure it's applied correctly. Temp at application time is crucial. Live in the North East. My out building that houses all my water tank and treatment used to require heat tape and heat . Now is heated by the well water itself. Initial cost was expensive but it's more than paid for itself in utility costs and aggravation of frozen pipes and the worry of fire by faulty heat tape or heater. Nothing worse than the missus waking you up at 4 am to go thaw pipes because she's got to put her eyeballs on before going to work. (We were working opposite shifts, so don't get in a tizzy)
That's totally wrong how you did that test. The outside siding is that temperature because the sun is heating it up. Go do it on the north side where the sun is not cooking the steel.
He's showing the difference between the hot steel and inside. Not the cooler steel and inside. If there was no insulation, it would be hot steel on both sides.
There is no doubt spray foam is an excellent insulator but do your research before having it installed. Most reputable pest control companies will NOT issue a termite warranty if you have spray form because it holds moisture and termites eat it. Second issue, if you were to get a roof or plumbing leak it could be months before it was discovered because the foam absorbs the moisture and hides the leak. That being said in certain colder, low humidity climates where termites are not an issue the R-Value spray form provides is impressive.
2" of Styrofoam insulboard at least 4 feet wide around the inside circumference of your floor will make a huge difference as well. Put it down, then your substrate, reinforcement and then concrete. Isolate your concrete floor from the outside footings with a rubber expansion strip. Should hold about 60°F year around in the center of the floor. Easy to maintain inside ambient with the walls and ceilings that thick and tight. You made a giant cooler. I think 2" spray foam closed cell is like R72 in value. Heat with a candle, cool with an ice cube. Proper insulation always pays you back.
definitely should of did 2 or 3 inches of closed cell or 5 plus of open cell. 1 inch is not sufficient enough for a conditioned space. maybe in a shop to bring down the radiant heat off of the metal. so now to have r7 on roof which is a no and and r 19 on the walls. with spray foam 50 percent of the efficiency is in the roof deck and 30 percent is in the walls over conventional insulation.
Should have purchased a light colored steel siding. I had black shingles on my house and when temps were above 90 i could never get my AC set points to match, couldn't keep up. I purchased light grey metal roofing and it was like we upgraded the entire AC system, never had a problem with it again, had nothing to do with insulation in the attic, because there isn't one in my 1926 craftsman home, just 2x6 with rock wool and plywood.
I live san jose strong sun..I use foil backed foam on windows.. from articles reflects thermal radiation.. so 110 on window side 76/78 on inside of foam.. plus no thermal heating of room.. my bath.. kitchen no longer heat up. I also use at bedroom wide window to stop sun glare on tv and blocker curtains.room never heats up.. aluminum side out reflects solar radiation..I use blinds then foam sheets then curtains.. kitchen I made a foam valance covered in a curtain a foam panel undercut goes into openning..winter summer hugh difference.. no one sees foil backed foam.. I did a joke one for bathroom summer sun was brutal room heated up walls etc.. I used flat packing foam taped together to fit into window recess..then used aluminum foil shiny side out as a tester.. damn it really worked.. I still use it.. the room wont heat up..I tested on and off..hugh difference I mean hugh.. try it on a lark... it's up right now.. I even have new thermlpanes but one must stop suns radiant heat.. only sunny windows the rest just thermal sun block curtains.. just try in a sunny hot room ..you will be amazed.. great for a tv room darkens room like a movie theater. It doesnt have to be tight loose is fine..it reflects solar radiation.. aluminum is one of best reflectors of heat from sun..homes here now on roofing use foil sided sheathing.. think if suns. How are you doing the HVAC there. Here in Texas I see so many foam building and homes like that and they don’t put the right HVAC system in and make the place unlivable. I love the foam but so many people don’t think ahead on the HVAC side. Then don’t get a unit with dehumidification or the right size system for the house. Load calculations are very important on a foam house.
Ceramic white paint should be law in Texas, and for flat roofs, expanded concrete on foam pavers, they use in Alaska to keep the heat inside. Then solar panels to run the A/C. Done.
I was helping my brother a few weeks ago with a new property he bought, we gutted the whole thing and had the property spray foamed. The temperature inside during peak summer after being spray foamed went down 20°, after sheetrock it went down another 5°
I had a metal roof that was getting so hot it would melt the wire insulation on the inside, and it was way too hot to even touch. I painted the outside with white elastomeric silicone paint, and now I can hold my hand on the inside in direct sun, and no more melted wires. I imagine it would be even more effective with insulation.
Go back at midnight and measure the difference. Spray foam is a insulator that holds heat pretty well. So while it keeps heat out it also will keep it warmer for longer.
If you're going to have an attic, if you were to leave an open area where you could see the roof at all times, you could put in a solar chimney and inside that building it would be about 75° to 70°
It will make a big difference if you intend to drywall and tape all that up. Then you can run a small AC unit and the building will retain the cool air better. Vice versa in the winter in regards to heat.

You can compensate by changing your emissivity rating, Styrofoam insulation is 0.60, but this idiot took both readings with the same E rating of 0.95. He is just spreading lies on the internet.
You’d have it so much cooler in there if the outside wasn’t black… like paint it with white or silver paint. But black is just gonna cook you n absorbs so much heat from the sun like place a white painted metal piece in the sun to see how much difference it makes. messur a black panel in direct sun, but I can do you one better Rockwool do a demo where they take a gas torch to the back of a think 100mm run og for a couple of minutes, the back is glowing red but front stil cool enough to toutch. And it handles that torch for a long time before it burns through, if memory serves me right about 30 min of what 7-800 C. That's impressive.
The surfaces have to be close to the same color to compare ir temp. Black radiates better than white. Stick a piece of black duct tape on the inside and see how much of a difference it makes. I don't know what the difference will be, only that there is one.
A black surface will measure hotter than a white surface with an IR thermometer. Your thermometer is measuring the amount of emitted radiation and every material is vastly different. You need a contact pyrometer to actually see the actual difference in temperature
While this tip is too late for this guy, if you want to do a metal skin building always add a thermal break between the metal and the studs. I typically spec a horizontal Z-channel/Z-furring with a thermal break. All of your mechanical fasteners, transfer hear from one material to the next, if you use a proper thermal break you can significantly reduce that temperature even further... also closing the doors and windows will help too.
With the door wide open your foam should be the same temp as the outside air temp. Not sure what you're trying to test here other than black things in the sun get hotter than the air temp.
The sun doesn't look like it's been up long enough to fully thermally heat soak the foam. Do it again after high noon. But it does work great, love the open cell foam insulation nice tight homes nowadays.

The uk not long had a 40c plus day. Last month and a national drought. Very unusual for our climet. No chance for our bodies to adjust as it came to use in an instant then it was gone. I believe it was 104-109f. That was hot with no ac in our homes.

Lmao as one of the biggest builders in Texas I at one time sold this product. Then one day I had a leak in a million dollar house. You figure out the rest. That’s not the only problem I had with foam, if the chemicals are not mixed properly it can be hazardous.
There's a pretty big error on those guns when measuring the temperature of different surfaces. You'd probably be just as accurate putting your hand on the surface and saying "hot" .. "warm".
You need to base line the measurements with an INSIDE wall assembly with the alternative insulation and not with the outside surface. The way you did it does not convey useful information. Plus foam on studs is a potential long term problem.
He’s not a contractor. Just the home owner. I used to work for this guy. He just googles a lot of things and watches a lot of UA-cam. Hence why he did the test from the wrong side of the house. Should have done it on the cool side and not tried to take a roof temp from 10-12 feet away.

Now add a 1 inch airgap between the roof material and decking and it drops another 30 to 40. Say effect as parking you rv under a cover.

Look into Prodex plus. 5mm thick, R17 or 10mm, R22. I have it on my shop, roof and walls. Amazing insulation.

Up here in Chicago. You want a minimum of 2" close cell. Otherwise, in the winter you'll get condensation in your wall cavity.

Living in NC, we don’t use black metal for this reason. Always go with a lighter color.
Maybe use white or reflecting surfaces when building in sunny areas?

88 but feels 99 and 63% humidity. It's 9:45am. By afternoon it should be over 95 but feels 110 and over 65% humidity.

The emissivity value you’ve used is incorrect. The colour bond is lower than that and the foam is a bit higher, which will affect the value measured.

Man I wish u would've give me a call before u sprayed foam it differently works as a great insulation but man be having alot of problem with it Corroding and rusting out with in a couple of years because of Condensation in-between foam and metal

The uk not long had a 40c plus day. Last month and a national drought. Very unusual for our climet. No chance for our bodies to adjust as it came to use in an instant then it was gone. I believe it was 104-109f. That was hot with no ac in our homes.
Why would you do the outside of the building in black sheet metal if you’re worried about the heat???

Would be cool to see the same test done when it is finished and has some hvac in there. Even just with doors and windows closed st the air temp isn't showing up on the inside.
That would be a test if the HVAC system. It would be literally whatever temp the thermostat is set at

Why are your exterior walls black? Seems like a lighter color would reflect the solar load instead of absorbing it.

Lmao as one of the biggest builders in Texas I at one time sold this product. Then one day I had a leak in a million dollar house. You figure out the rest. That’s not the only problem I had with foam, if the chemicals are not mixed properly it can be hazardous.
Those infrared thermometers aren't super accurate. But still accurate enough to tell you things are hot.
There's a pretty big error on those guns when measuring the temperature of different surfaces. You'd probably be just as accurate putting your hand on the surface and saying "hot" .. "warm".
With your doors open it will be base 100 on all surfaces inside if its 100 outside.
Why would you have an additional 7" of open cell to cap over 1" of closed cell? That's even pretty overkill for sound proofing

You need to base line the measurements with an INSIDE wall assembly with the alternative insulation and not with the outside surface. The way you did it does not convey useful information.
Plus foam on studs is a potential long term problem.

He’s not a contractor. Just the home owner. I used to work for this guy. He just googles a lot of things and watches a lot of UA-cam. Hence why he did the test from the wrong side of the house. Should have done it on the cool side and not tried to take a roof temp from 10-12 feet away.
Serious question why not just paint the building White?
