I hate that people aways complain about the lyrics making no sense. There's meaning if you care to look!
ikr? it gets really annoying. the fact that you have to put in the extra effort in order to understand the music is one of my favorite parts of this song,
SugarSpiceSatan ## If it was Rick Ross and beyonce it could have made sense to people. This is the exact reason he wrote this song, there is no way you can please everyone but before people mess you up please make your self happy.
Makes perfect sense if you were alive at the time.
If you were alive and a certain age when Rick Nelson wrote and recorded the original, you would totally understand what the lyrics say.

and that's exactly why Adam did a cover. People/fans complained his early work was too spacey and left-field, but when he released his more grounded, "normal" pop-inspired album, everyone still complained. He realized he just can't win if he tries to do every little thing to please anyone that isn't himself.
And now he's over it with Coco Moon, and it's just so incredibly beautiful
He often gets slammed for his music and things he sings about. The line, "You can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself," becomes very powerful.

Adam said he didn't write songs for the public. He wrote them for himself in his basement. He didn't expect it will go out to the world.

They are, if you don't know the story behind it. This song was written by Ricky Nelson, who got his start as a Teen Heartthrob. Eventually Rick decided he was tired of simply singing vapid love songs and stopped touring to focus on artistic discovery. In 1971 there was a Rock 'n Roll revival concert at Madison Square Garden that RIcky was invited to, so he went, but he realized much of his fame was that of a teenage idol, no one cared about him as a normal adult.
Thus, he wrote this song.
Maybe we don't know, but he relased this cover before "The Midsummer Station".
And for me, I'll never complain about his music as I'm so thanksfull for all the amazing songs he has made & for which I'll never be able to thanks him enough. And also as a producer I would hate people complaining about songs I've worked on hours and hours !

@@sankarii.21 I made this comment two years ago and I can truthfully say that while I do still struggle with this, I've gotten better. I've learned that there are times to do whats best for you, but there are also times to do whats best for others. Its a difficult balance that's hard to work out. I'm still working on it, most people are. My heart goes out to you, and I hope you're able to find the right balance for you. It does get easier. Just don't lose yourself to make others happy 💛

Its a song by Rick Nelson. Its about a show he played Madison Square garden when he played new songs and he got booed off stage. He makes references to other bands that we there (ex. Yoko Ono brought her Walrus (John Lennon)). After the show he decided to do what he wanted instead of what everyone else wanted which in other words is: You can't please everyone so you gotta please yourself.

It's not coincidence that he releases this song at a time where Owl City fans are critizing Adam for a change in style of his music. I for one enjoy just about everything done by this guy!
It doesn't matter WHAT Adam sings, if it's his songs or someone else's, it seems more like he's found a creative and fun way to give life lessons

I really admire Adam Young for doing this, because he basically is stating that he KNOWS that not everyone will be happy with his newer songs. Its a new sound. But it makes HIM happy, so a few so-called fans who can't accept that he's GROWING in his music aren't going to stop him. Even if he did, nobody would force you to listen to it. I'm glad the music is helping you.
People(some fans) complained that Adam's music was too "left field" and "off the wall" as far as writing goes. So he tried to write an album with more grounded, relatable and that's where The Midsummer Station came from. But guess what? People started complaining that his new music "wasn't him" &that they liked his "old" music better. There is a link in the vid descrip. to Adam's blog post explaining the history of this song. The history is very close to his own predicament with the same issue.
Owl city song is a blessing to my life....

The Garden Party was a party at Madison Square Garden. And all the people (and walruses) he mentioned in this song are based on real people at the party. Just thought I'd let you know. I got all that from his blog.
Rick Nelson was a Rock N Roll Star of the 1950s and did a TV sitcom with his real life family. He went to Madison Square Garden and everyone wanted him to just sing the oldies but he wanted to show off the new stuff.
Adam's voice and lyrics together are freaking heaven, zomgeeeeee.

Ricky Nelson wrote this song when supposedly got booed off the stage by the crowd in a concert in Madison Square Garden. He played his old songs but nobody recognized him. I guess after he got booed off Chuck Berry(Johnny B' Good) came out and took over. The concert was full of famous musicians. "Hello Mary Lou" and "She Belongs to Me" are some songs he refers to.

Love tips the scales. Love is understanding. Yet for us, adults can still get mad at children. Look at how uncontrolled we actually are. We restrict our actions but not our thoughts? For what purpose is there in biting our tongue unless we actually wanted to learn how to become unmoved by the negativity we bring within us? To understand, I shouldn't say this just because I feel this way. And take that understanding to a new level?

No this was covered after Adam made 4 songs from the album available for free download before TMS was released officially.
Those who were hearing the new singles were complaining at how "mainstream" he sounded, when he explained in multiple blog posts and interviews that he was making it mainstream on purpose and it wasn't the record company's doing, as many like to believe.
He wrote a blog post pertaining to why he covered this song. There's a link to the blog post in the video description.

My theory: Adam Young uploaded this cover in response to all the negativity regarding the leaked Shooting Star EP. After all, Ricky Nelson went through a similar experience when he wrote this song as he nicely put, "You can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself!"

Amen. Ultraviolet was worlds better than TMS, but something is honestly still lacking. I miss the stripped down synths and the soft, almost whispery vocals. The beats are a bit too heavy these days.
Shush.....he's trying a new experiment. He wants to see if he can put the "magic" into pop. Obivously, he sadly can't. So he may or may not go back to the beauty that is "old" Owl City. :P

I have probably the worst family ever my mom and dad are divorced I very strongly dislike my dad for leaving my mom because she didn't deserve it. And my moms side of the family are complete idiots. My grandpa is rich but the most he's given me is fake earrings but I don't even have my ears pierced. And when I listen to Owl City's music I feel in a new and different world. So thanks to Owl City I feel more confident and like I can be myself. Thank you Adam Young for everything you do.

its not by owl city, its a cover, its really by ricky nelson, from the 50s. rickey nelson had a concert one night, and everyone was expecting him to come out and sing his old songs that had made him famous. instead he sang his new songs, and everybody booed him. he was heartbroken. so he wrote a song about that night.

I think you hit the nail on the head; the line where he talks about playing memories and how if that were the case that he'd rather drive a truck is directly referencing the days when he worked a Coca-Cola plant packing trucks. I'm not altogether pleased by his evolution; I believe that Ocean Eyes was his best effort [not Fireflies in my opinion, the Tip of the Iceberg, Cave In, and Umbrella Beach were better songs] however it's his music, so he decides where it goes.

I'm an author and I recently began to wrap up a trilogy that incorporated new ideas with milieus that made it all seem dangerous.... it involved a rather violent man and gallant boy... after reading the first story of the trilogy my best friend complimented the story, but I could tell she didn't really like it. See, I'm a pacifist but that doesn't mean I don't write about tragic, dangerous things... my writing does not always reflect who I am and this song reminds me of the time with my friend.
