Is Wendell the only person to test performance for strategy games on new CPUs?
I presume games like Civ , Galactic Civ, Football Manager, Rimworld, Paradox games like Crusader Kings, etc etc that they benefit from more cores.

Yeah! I bought x3D for Stellaris late game, it's a bit odd that the tech community seems to ignore the grand strategy and games like Factorio, in favour of less cerebral shoot 'em ups.
Upgraded to 5800x3D and have had to enable v-sync to have some consistency with how fast game days pass. You cannot get a rhythm and keep up when it's crazy fast.
The tech community ignores games like stellaris because it’s really difficult to benchmark. We should all get on paradox to put a benchmark into the game. All games should have built in benchmarks.
Or Civ 6 turn times. It's an easy thing for tech youtubers to test, yet they almost never do.
@@slipknottin make a late game save file, set it to fastest, run 5 minutes, see how many days it gets, reload and repeat. Get a 10 run average.

Thanks for benchmarking games that actually benefit from the 3d cache, unlike every other review I've watched. I would love to see a revisit of Stellaris with some numbers. Maybe let a save file run as a spectator til the midgame at 2300 and time how long it takes to reach endgame at 2400 on fastest with autosaves off, using the same save file across cpus. Also maybe do 3 runs per cpu just to account for any RNG, though I doubt RNG plays a big part once the borders have kind of settled.
How is anybody supposed to know which games would benefit before testing them?

For power consumption:
The 5700X is about the best there is that still gives very good fps although it's getting stomped now in avg fps if you want the faster GPUs. The 7800X3D is AWESOME, probably the best out there for frames per watt and then next is probably the 5800X3D.
The 7600 and 7700 are also AWESOME. The two Intel parts in that range of power consumption are just too much on the low end side for a better gaming system with the 13400F and the 12600 being in that same area of power consumption.
For power efficiency during gaming (frames per watt):
The 7800X3D beats the SNOT out of everything.
Techpowerup does the complete collection of power consumption of a wide variety of apps and games with all the newer CPUs so they have a big collection of data. I don't know if they have a single link to power charts for all their tested CPUs but they at least give a pretty good sample of CPUs for each review they do.

Love that you mentioned Factorio and Stellaris. Those are the types of games (and the specific ones) I'm most worried about when CPU shopping
Yes, games that actually challenge the CPU not some shooter that gets hundreds of fps on most CPUs.
Dropping the 5800x3D into a couple years old AM4 motherboard was and is the deal of the decade.

No idea what changed, but this video has significantly better visuals than usual. By that I mean the camera footage, extremely sharp, good angles, etc
From all the games I've played Stellaris has always been that one game where performance is absolutely guaranteed to slow down to a crawl, the only thing upgrading did is delay at what point in the game, it starts going slower and slower. Just like kicking a can down the road, that game has never had a real performance solution (in terms of hardware) until maybe the 3D V-Cache. However a year later many of us still haven't upgraded to a 3D V-Cache CPU and noone has done anything close to testing CPU performance in that game with a scientific approach like we see with so many other games. Thank you so much for testing Stellaris, but a tangible test result comparison would be a night and day difference.

Thank you for mentioning simulation games. As for benchmarking Stellaris, you could measure the time required to progress X amount of years over a specified time at max speed. Then calculate percentage difference.
Can confirm, 5800X3D still insane. If budget is a thing for you, AM4 is still so worth it.
Yea, no reason to upgrade that baby for quite some time.
And believe it or not that's what a LOT of the DIY market feels because Zen 3 outsells other gens and probably even Intel 12th and 13th gen combined. AMD Zen 3 CPUs typically dominate Amazon's top 10 best selling CPUs (their top 50 list), with usually 6 - 7 Zen 3 CPUs in the top 10. That's just domination.
So most people don't care about the best or newest now, I'm very sure because of how expensive top end parts have gotten. It was really AMD that got buyers back into the more higher end parts because they offered them a LOT of performance for a much better price than Intel, when Intel had no competition.
Indeed, buy am4 with 5800x3D and don't think about upgrading before am6.
And that's if you're buying the motherboard and RAM and with it. If you're upgrading from most older AM4 systems you only need the CPU.
@@xTheUnderscorex That is indeed what I did. X470 Taichi Ultimate and 4x8GB 3200 CL14 as base platform. 5800X3D and a 6950XT Red Devil were the upgrades. Done ... for years.

Thank you for going over simulation games in this review, stellaris, dwarf fortress, and games like factorio have massive gains with vcash and its sad this whole segment of games is ignored by most reviewers.
Wendell, any chance of getting an interview with a game dev, or even an AMD dev, or PM, who can explain precisely why games as a class perform so much better with a huge amount of cache, when not limited by the GPU that is? What is it that games are doing that other software isn't that results in such a marked performance increase with the X3D architecture? I'm sure AMD must have analyzed this segment and saw a niche ripe for exploitation, or maybe game devs made the connection first? I'd love to know!
I really wanted to wait for this but it would've meant building a whole new system so, I opted for a 5800X3D from a 3600.

Im still rocking my Ryzen 7 5800x3D with my rtx 4090. Long story short, based on the graphs, if you're gaming ONLY on 1080p resolution, then you'll see the difference in performance and better 1% lows for a smoother gaming experience. But for 1440p and 4k gaming, you will not see much of any performance gains. I game on my 1440p and have a second 4k monitor on the side for triple A single player titles. Looks like I'll be skipping out on AM5 platform for now until I see better gains at higher resolutions.
As a software developer who games on the same box, I'm kind of disappointed that I cannot find a 7950X3D because people who *only* want to game have bought them all up.
Yeah looks good for my personal Jenkins test station. With some fast storage. But probably struggle to find them.

And, the best part is that was coming from the same reviewers who said "..the 5800X3D is cool - but where's the 5950X3D AMD?" when they reviewed the 58X3D. Now complaining about why the 7950X3D exists. Go figure. I don't get it, I really don't
Yep, the 7950X 3D is still on the top of the gaming benchmarks. Uses the same power as the 7800X 3D. Is awesome for productivity at half the power. And almost every tech reviewer still shat on it today. lol And they all didn't understand why AMD launched the 7950X 3D first. Ummm, maybe it was because the 7950X was the best selling chip on AM5. Tech tubers don't have a clue unfortunately.

The biggest problem for the 7800X3D is the 5800X3D. The 5800X3D has been selling like crazy, typically being in the top 6 on Amazon's top 50 best selling CPUs and it has at multiple times been within the top 5 best selling CPUs.
I'm thinking that people who bought the 5800X3D are in no mood to switch out a system JUST because there's a CPU that games better. A handful of people will, most won't. There's a lot of expense in moving to AM5 and personally I'm not a fan of the limitations right now for Zen 4/AM5 because I use a MB for much of the IO that's on it. The fact that Zen 4 still has an 8GB/s CPU-chipset link, something that Zen 2 already had is no good to me. The fact that memory speeds are not very good for Zen 4 is not good to me. So, Ryzen/AM5 needs major upgrades before I'm moving to it, and if it doesn't get those upgrades I'll probably switch to Intel for 15th gen, as long as it hits the goal Intel has set out for it.
Most likely AMD needs to move to a better link between ICs on the SoC because I'm betting that their infinity fabric is part of the limitations and this is where Intel may have an advantage but we have to wait and see the tiled CPUs to know.
This is what I believe is in part an actual factor to the R9X3D being first. The 5800X3D is awesome for people that play games where the cache helps, if they could be happy with an 8 core. People exist that want more cores, and the benefit of V-cache. Any person that plays games yet had reason to buy a 5950X, would not want to step down to a 5800X3D. There are cases where a 5950X will bottleneck even a 6800XT. It's gets kind of annoying that most youtubers treat the R9X3D as some kind of trick, as if pure gamers can't wait a month so must rush to pay $700 for way more CPU than they need. The 16 core users waited 2 years to have the best of both worlds. The 7950X3D at $700 doesn't look terrible for the person that paid $800 for a 5950X.
@@blkspade23 Yeah me too. I felt the 7950X3D would get more sales off the bat than the 7800X3D because there was a LOT of complaints from people who SAY they need all the cores of a 5950X but wanted the Vcache, so when all the rumors were going around about why AMD could be delaying the 7800X3D I just assumed AMD wanted to get parts out to the people they felt would buy the most.
And yeah I ignore most of what UA-camrs say. They're arrogant SOBs and want to attack companies too much. The two Steves are the worst which is why I don't subscribe to Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed. In fact with Gamers Nexus, if I want to see a review he posts, I listen until the first irritating statement, then turn the sound down, and thumb down the video at the end since I couldn't listen to it. I'm also skipping through the video just to see the charts and that's it. In fact I stop the video while jumping through and he doesn't get credit for me giving the video much view time. That way I don't feel compelled to leave 5 - 6 comments attacking the different things he said. I can't STAND his sarcasm, but that seems to be the thing that turns on a lot of viewers, the negativity.
I think 1440p and 2160p high settings benchmarks are vital for making the decision that benchmark videos are supposed to help with. The 1080p medium charts are helpful that they drag out the smallest differences. But those differences get so slim when you bump up the settings and resolution with your brand new graphics card that you start feeling buyer's remorse.
So, I'm really thankful for the 2160p benchmarks.
I'm so, so, so grateful for the 2160p high results being included. 5800X3D looking so good in real world scenario; you don't even have to replace everything else.
If planning for a new system though, I feel like leaning towards intel after having my R53600 build since launch since AMD has been a hassle with ram timings and bios revisions, for (me) someone not too handsy at dealing with this stuff.
Savings with a 5800X 3D are really lucrative though :/

What about the 7950x3d? Is it the ultimate VFIO cpu? 8 cores for the host and 8 X3D cores for the VM? Please make a build/install and extended video about that! Looking-glass with 2 GPU's, optimizing for low DPC latency, etc!

for me its mostly the power draw , it sucks like 40-60 watts while gaming about the same performance as a 13900k going average of 200 watts

I think the 7800X3D and 5800X3D are great value, but I'm going to wait for them to figure out how to stack the cache and keep 99% of the frequency of the vanilla chip.
Cache is very often the frequency limiting factor in CPU and GPU architectures. Its not a simple problem to solve. Im not an expert im just regurgitating what i read from some knowledgeable people.
I've got a nice 5900x system, but I'm tempted to stick a 5800X3D in there just to have a basically maxed out AM4 gaming build...

I really appreciate that you include 1440p and 4k results. all other reviewers just focus on 1080p... who tf still games on 1080p that owns a high end graphic cards, since 1440p 240hz monitors exist

What's even more amazing? My 5800x3D is still competitive. I have mine in an ITX ASUS X570 and 32gb 3600 B-die. Along with my 6950xt, I have a RYZEN gaming beast(so far)
Also it is important to note that during gaming the 7950x3d can have the cc'd with the extra cache totally focused on gaming for max performance while the other ccd can take care of any other programs running on the same time in the background. 7800x3d can not do that
I would actually love to see a 7800x3d vs 7950x3d (and why not vs 5800x3d too?) benchmarks in gaming and streaming at the same time (NVNEC x264 P6 / P7 encoding, maybe some benchmarks with AV1 too).
All I've got atm is an old 3900x and 4090 and my fps gets tanked hard in OW2 when I start to stream or record, therefore thinking about upgrade. I would love to know if there is any point in paying for those extra non-vcache cores for such an use case.
@@RJ-vy4yd me personally bought the 7950x3d because during gaming I want to have stream open in my second monitor, to have all my programs for monitoring and controlling the components of my PC as well as make recordings have opera gx, twitch and other stuff running in the background. So the non v cache ccd can take care of all these so the 3d cache ccd can focus on the game to make sure I get top tier gaming performance. With a 7800x3d .... Well... Still good performance but some performance would be lost due to the CPU trying to take care of all those things with 1 single ccd
should check again, they park the cores in game, and when you disable that feature they shown that sometimes the game moves across fabric, so you get better performance parking. if you do background stuff, you should just use intels e cores, if it matters to you. also quicksync apps, amd doesn't have that yet for the programs that work with.

I hope one day we can see heavy open world mmorpg(world of warcraft, final fantasy and etc) and heavy sim games(stellaris, civ6, hoi4, total war end of turn times ,football manager and etc) tested as well.. those type of games also have a huge amount of player base especially the mmorpgs like world of warcraft have like 1-2mil online daily for example and all of the mentioned games benefit greatly from 3dvcache, where Shadow of the Tomb Rider is just good for benchmarking rather than me or anyone else playing it.
Open World Online games with a ton of people literally everywhere you go can show greatle the benefits of 3dvcache and how much it can help with 1% lows in these scenarios. Also open world mmo rpgs are not a CyberPunk type of game which you can finish for 3 weeks and never play again. Games like this are being played for 10-15years easily on and off or continuesly.
P.S. Excuse my not so great english and yes I know its not easy to test online open world mmos because there are a ton of variables, but I'm sure it can be done and it will be very much appreciated by a ton of people and not even counting the sim games as well.
Im a little late to this, I have a 4090 paired with a 10850k on 3440x1440. Am I bottlenecking myself here? I was planning on upgrading to this cpu... i should mention I do light graphic design on the side but mostly only game on the PC

The other thing to note here, is the 7800x3D is (in my experience) very easily overclockable. You really don't need a ton of cooling either, as it's insanely efficient. The one I tested was very happy and stable at 5.3Ghz (5.1ghz all core under heavy load), 2100 IF, and 6400MT DDR5... with minimal BIOS tinkering, and a tiny bump to VCore, 1.35V on memory, and 1.28v SOC.
And the real world performance gain from all that?

Going to keep my 10900k for one more generation, then look into the 8 series AMD and the Intel 14 series and see what those bring. My CPU isn't really holding back my 7900xtx in 3440x1440 in any noticeable way. Thanks for the video.

@Level1Techs I face quite a bit of a dilemma here, as I game and compile a lot of code on Linux. Coming from a 18 Core Haswell-EP, I don't want to give up on either front. Also, I am very price/performance conscious and power costs are really high over here in Europe. The 7800X3D lacks multi-core performance by a lot against Raptor Lake whereas Raptor Lake lacks AVX-512. As CachyOS will offer x86-64-v4 repositories soon, I don't want to miss out on the fun there, too. That leaves me with no no compromise option right now, the 13600K would probably be my choice if my system broke tomorrow and if Intel would lower their pricing by 20%. Maybe keeping my Xeon for another two years is the way forward? As I don't own a high end GPU yet, I would probably be better off with such a new GPU first anyway for some time.
So, you wouldn't consider the 7950x3d? It's likely only going to get better as AMD releases new drivers for it and Microsoft works at improving the scheduler.

Also remember Zen 4 does AVX-512 better than any other CPU at the moment.

My theory is AMD bothered with dual CCD V-cache/non V-cache pair to build out asymmetric software configuration infrastructure, that will give more flexibility and top down direction of the scheduler based on user not thread requirements.
That prepares the way for the architecture experiments, like the believed Phoenix 2 low end mobile 2 Zen4+ 4 Zen4c hybrid CPUs.
Imagine future consoles with V-cache and IOD on a cheaper node, a 12-16c/24-32t CCD compact core on 3nm with V-cache L3 plus 4c/8t low frequency cores in the IOD to manage system tasks and accelerator blocks.
AMD could probably release a chip that has a 8 core Zen 4 full clocked chiplet with a 12 core Zen4 chiplet with stripped out cache but with 3d cache added on top to eek out a win in productivity and gaming. Not sure that would make sense when they could pair a Zen 5 chiplet with the 12 core zen 4 with 3d cache. I'm also curious as to if/when AMD will add 3d Vcache to the IO die on the chip to work as L4 cache. They could probably throw at least 256MB of L4 on the IO die.
@@Somethingaboutthat there's s few issues that might make that tricky.
First the 7nm V-cache die has power vias which in Zen4 already have spread into the L2 cache, so a compact design may be impossible without the L3 area. The stacked chip would be over hotter logic.
Then according to a Tom's Hardware in-depth piece on the 2nd gen V-cache the voltage limitations are an effect of the larger distance the volt domain has to cover. Cranking up the volts to maintain sufficient to have high frequency results in high leakage, which makes for wasteful power loss and high thermals.
So it's not trivial to add the low latency extra cache. Putting it on top of a compact core might be undesirable in other ways.
Now the 16c/32t CCD of Bergamo would slaughter the Raptor Lake E cores, so an 8c/16t without V-cache plus Zen4c productivity CCD would be tasty in the benchmarks and with the 79x0X3D core parking tech would be decent for gaming like a 7700x.
But does it make sense just to win the benchmarks in productivity and be respectable in gaming?
Why not do a full productivity chip, call it ThreadRipper, make it from 32c/64t to 64c/128t with a quad channel socket cheaper than EPYC/TR Pro that totally crushes Raptor Lake and Fishhawk Falls as a cost efficient prosumer platform?
The reason would be simply production issues, consumers happily use the CCDs that fail to make EPYC or 7950x grade.
Small production runs reduce the ability to collect golden samples through binning for the elite chips.
However with Bergamo servers coming, perhaps your idea will happen with scavenging of 16c/32t CCDs as 12c/24t Zen4c in hybrid chips. But if paired with V-cache it ought to be in the Zen4 CCD to avoid niche redesign and avoid compromising game performance with even lower boost frequencies.
5800X3D is a very obvious choice if you're coming from an older AM4 platform at this point, for gaming at least.
Starting from a Zen1 era system from 5-6 years ago (like an X370), a 5800X3D is all it takes to not bottleneck a 4090. BIOS updates even added things like ReBAR support.
Because anyone on the whole planet puts a 4090 on a x370 system.
When new assets are loading there probably are much fewer cache hits and memory access plus raw compute (texture decompression?) play a stronger role.

You should perform a test with audio software like Cubase, Studio One Pro or Reaper. While in general productivity apps perform with no benefit from the cache, german computer magazine c't tested the 5800x3d and other high end CPUs with audio software and there the cache increases performance in an massive way. The 5800x3d outperfomed an 5950x and an 12900k with ease. I would love to know how the 7800x3d runs with audio software compared to an 13900k (or anything else). My guess would be that the 7800x3d is the to go to cpu for an digital audio workstation - with gaming capabilities... ;-)

they wont, the cache imposes other restrictions, but if they did cache for some reason on server side it would be massive, we already see this with other cpus, they just attach chunks by default.

There must be other loads than gaming where you can benefit from a large cache.
Large vector calculations, matrix operations, medium size FFT analysis, complicated frame by frame effects, video encoding, compression using a large dictionary, word and/or block sizes, physics simulations, CFD, FEA or something.
Someone must know how to take advantage of this large cache size. What exactly is it in games that take advantage of the cache size, (what type of calculations)?
Constraint solving, collision detection, and physics simulation. Lots of short (100-200 instruction) parallel solves, followed by a synchronizing barrier. Without deliberate optimization it doesn't scale past 8 cores on AMD though, because synchronization between CCD's takes about 5x longer than within a CCD. L3 access across the IO die is slower than a RAM fetch.
That's a great motherboard. They call it budget, but the quality is fantastic. I just completed a build with the LGA 1700 counterpart B660 Mortar with an i3 12100f, and it's an impressive motherboard.

Currently using the 5950X and planning an AM5 upgrade. I am not a gamer, but still build gaming rigs. I'm considering the 7950X, since I like to keep within 16 cores. How much different is the 16 core vs this 7800X3D?
The best thing about the 7800x3D and 7950x3D was it lowered the price for the real gem, the 7950x. When it did I lunged for those unadultered symetrical 16 cores. It's got 2x more power to play the most intensive game I want to play. In BF2042 it runs at 50% on 16 threads. The big disappointment is DDR5.. when you populate all 4 slots, the speed drops down to 3600. So, yeah, what's the point of DDR5 then. There is no point. My DDR3 ran at 3600...

Its kind of sad how much they limited the core boost vs the other 2.
I have 7800x3d and decent peerless assasin cooler+ cheaper x670e mobo, paired with xtx... literally no need for using PBO curently.. its more like " maybe in the future?" Lets be honnest 1 fps difference at 3440x1440... thats nothing Burger.. its very cool, stable , pc is silent and performs great of the box.. future will tell us more
@@jankratochvil9779 PBO usually lowers temps when running - offset voltage curve. sometimes its worth it just for less heat.

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D erases the lower clocks and performance of the Zen 3 5800X3D but with higher IPC/clock gains per cycle that the 5800X had. (Cinebench 17,432 Zen 4 vs 16000 Zen 3/5800X) The only con I have is coming from the X3D Zen 3 to Zen 4 might not be enough increase to upgrade? Building new and getting a faster performing CPU at lower wattage and bigger L2 + L3 and other little improvements gives Zen 4 7800X3D a leg up from me.
Compare AM4 vs AM5 total system cost, then put that in relation to performance differences between 5800X3D and 7800X3D that matter to you, add a grain of salt regarding potential future upgrades on the same platform, and you got your answer :3

Threadripper is basically last in line since AMD is the smallest with the least resources of the 'big 3', and HEDT/workstations gotta be one of the smallest markets AMD competes in. It already debuted in EPYC with Milan-X pretty much a full year ago, so the heavy lifting for a Threadripper variant is already done - AMD just needs the time/people/resources to get to it after everything else they offer that brings in a lot more money for them, lol.

Having a hard time choosing a motherboard for the 7800X3D. Currently juggling between; Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite AX; Gigabyte B650E Aorus Master; Asrock X670E Steel Legend. Which one would generally be the better motherboard to choose? I don't really want to pay any more for a motherboard. than the B650E Aorus Master.
I mostly game and do some light productivity hobby tasks on it. I also usually keep my computers for a long time (my current cmpuer is 5+ years, it got and old i7 6700k in there). So I'm hoping that I can in the future change CPU and GPU without changing the motherboard.
I do want an expansion slot with x4 speed as I want to install an 4k60 capture card there and maybe better capture cards in the future. And I don't do any sophisticated overclocking, maybe I'll tinker with undervolting and some very light PBO tweaking. But nothing major.
It seems like the moral of the story is that the 7800x3D is a great CPU, but if you own a 5800x3D, youre still good.
my 7700x and 4080 do just fine in 4k 120Hz gaming. but it is a great gaming cpu.
I have a 5800x oc to 4.95ghz..clubbed with rtx 3080ti will i need to go for ddr5 platform or 5800x is good..i only play games on 4k...so at 4k 5800x is it fine...and will 4080 be bottlenecked by 5800x at 4k..
I hope I can get one of these tomorrow before the scalpers inevitably come in and buy all of them within 30 seconds to sell at $300+ over MSRP...
You can pair a Ryzen 7000 cpu with 8000Mhz DDR5 now. A little fussy getting it set up but man does it reduce latency.
Just got a 7700x I’m selling that and getting the 7800x3d I just upgraded to a 4080 a new am5 motherboard and the new ddr5 ram last piece to the puzzle so I think it’s the best choice I should have waited on the 7700x but it ended up like that
