Buckin you should get a rubber “Horse Mat” it’s an 1” thick solid rubber mat 4’x6’ and about $40 American. This is perfect to split wood on the ground. Your head will hit the rubber and not the dirt

After years of lifting weights, my primary workouts are now splitting wood. Much more productive- and more satisfying. I prefer working outdoors to being inside a gym.
I love splitting wood the old fashioned way. When I got days off work.. im buckin and splitting wood at every chance. I learned from my papaw down in Tennessee. He used a dull maul.. but I've seen your dad do like im used too. A combo of a maul and a sledge hammer.. I use a tear drop wedge too. Can tell your dad has done it a long time..he's learned to stand to the side of the maul when hitting with a sledge. I do the same thing.
Buckin the state of your old man's axe looks like my father in law's and mine looks like yours well my father in law's did untill a got my hands on it after watching bbr the master there both now razors and looking amazing. Oh ya I took a few pieces of 3x3x1/4 square tubing and welded a little rig that I welded a medium size bench vise to. And it slides into my receiver hitch on my truck. I made it just the right height for when I file my saw. It’s pretty handy. 🙂🙂

Your always saying you prefer the low profile chopping blocks and it makes me wish I could send you one of the three I have. I use 7" tall 42" round hard maple trunk wood. Being that it's from the base of the tree where the upper roots start forming it gives the grain a crazy twisted and curved pattern that makes it nearly indestructible. In two years of hard use I've knocked maybe a 2" chunk off the outer edge. You'd love em.. Next time I head to Oregon I'll have to shoot up your way and bring ya one.. It's like having your own 4 foot chopping pad.
My two favorite splitting axes is my 6 lb fire ax in my steel splitting ax that 6 lb fireman's act as a wonderful job and that steals the next one up it's awesome
You should really try getting a 15" tire and screwing it with some washers into the chopping block. It helps keep the splits vertical and you don't have to bend down so much. I think you'd love it!
I think it’s what you told me once buckin. It’s what you experience. Some people like mauls. Some like axes. It’s what works for them in the wood they are splitting. Nice video bud. wow, that maul's edge is the definition of throwing a hunk of steel at wood... I think I seen a tomahawk in a museum once with that same edge geo :P but I guess as long as it gets the job done, then its a working mans tool... I just cant help but think how much more energy is spent and wasted with a dull edge like that, but as you say we've all swung axes like that, that are duller then butter knives but amazingly they still manage to get the job done at the end of the day.

Dude,looks like your in the evergreen state...my favorite state..my dad would cut down trees and he'd hook a rope up to trick with me driving,he'd say just take your foot off the brake and don't spin the tires,I'd say but dad what if the tree falls on me?? He'd say just do what your told boy...lol..I think I was maybe 10,maybe 8..when the tree fell I' would jump out the truck and grab my hatchet and start at the top and he'd grab the saw and we'd meet in the middle,then we'd split the wood with a mall...keep up the great videos brother,love them and you...btw I still love splitting wood

Do some Kettlebell up side down grip holds as well as KB swings while forcing the KB down instead of letting it drop and you’ll be able to blow pieces of wood apart as if they were dynamited apart. Last 3 months I’ve been working on that stuff and it’s like artillery going off when it hits - especially with a 4lb convex ax *BOOM*

That's a beautiful 4# stiletto bowtie axe head. I've learned that a 6-8 inch chopping block seems to work best for me. Thanks to Buckin a year ago I had an old splitting maul and now I think I may have a couple dozen axes SMH my favorite is a 5# Sager bowtie double bit it's a wood splitting beast !
Hi Buck. Technical question. I’m new to chopping wood and I’m not sure how to pick out a good axe. Is the axe handle length important for certain leverage and what should I look for with a head? I’ve seen some full one piece metal axes with rubber handles and I’m not sure why it could be better or not better. Also, you mentioned stick to the program…do you have a video where you explain chopping basics for beginners? Thanks for all positive videos.

Hello All! I sitting here watching Buckin destroy, cut logs making firewood. Using a chipping block stops the ax from hitting the ground when you go through the cut. It wouldn't take long before your ax edge looked like your old man's. l loved the opening scene, the Whale that he can see without too much trouble, is great. Here in SE Louisiana, you may be able to see Pilot Whales in the Gulf Of Mexico, but never humpbacks. The last time I saw a humpback whale, I was in the US Navy, on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, playing war games! I was a corpsman, so my duty station was in the Offers Quarters whenever General Quarters was called, so I could sneak out and take in the view, which sometimes gave me bad hearing from the guns being fired. One final question, who, what, and where, removed the bark from those bucked tree cuts?
This year I did things a little different with our winter fuel so I chopped more and split less, just smaller diameter wood is all so a good boys axe size goes right through on one swing. But I do miss splitting. Splitting is just a bit special. The concentration, the force and precision. It's just good. I dunno maybe I'll get hold of some splitting wood soon. Not got anywhere to store it mind but.... Yeah axe work is special
hi buckin, i have been wondering whether the length of the handle depends on the length of the arm....? and when splitting on a high block, 10% of the momentum that the body brings when it follows the ax is missing. similar to boxing ... have a great day everyone! take the high road, be kind and let love rule!
block height is dependent upon the height and length of the individual person.and length of axe shaft .... teach all novices about toes and legs when the axe misses the target/or cuts through fast etc.?. wear boots not sandals.....njoy the splitting, its good for you.

Maybe bury the regular sized chopping block about 6 inches. More stability, more swing, and safer for the axe edge.

I like to use my 8 pound maul rather than my axe I actually like the weight so I don’t have to swing very hard and it gets me strong! 😁

block height is dependent upon the height and length of the individual person.and length of axe shaft .... teach all novices about toes and legs when the axe misses the target/or cuts through fast etc.?. wear boots not sandals.....njoy the splitting, its good for you.
