Freddie Mercury's probably the best example of raw, natural talent. He was never formally trained, and while he's known to be one of the greats in terms of vocal ability, he developed nodules because he'd never learned proper technique. He was already absolutely incredible, but imagine what he might've been capable of had he gotten proper instruction
Kayla Cohn He’d be like Marc Martel. Similar sound, and Marc also did not receive any formal vocal training, but he knows when to hold back, something Freddie seemed to miss.
@@Holobrine Marc doesn't have Freddie's range or half his vocal ability, which is part of why he only sings the same handful of Queen songs. I know someone who has a similar sound to Whitney Houston, but isn't that great a singer. I'm not trying to diss Marc, I think he's phenomenal, but he's no Freddie Mercury.

What I have found is children who are encouraged to sing and continue singing as they grow develop a natural engagement and ease with knowing their voice. They have a comfort because it's always been with them. Learning to sing as an adult and not knowing your voice takes so much more work.

Even natural talents/abilities/gifts should be taught to be used correctly and efficiently. It gives you more flexibility as an artist/individual, and prolongs the use of those talents.

I was 6 years old the first time I discovered my voice was naturally blessed. You're right because I was "mimicking" the Disney princess from Sleeping Beauty and all the other kids at school, stared at me in awe. A melody to me has always been subconscious, not something I need to think hard to convey. It's also easy to notice when singers overkill with technique and forget the soul of a song.

I agree with what you said. Being a "natural" singer, though, can be a drawback in some ways (as in one thing mentioned earlier by Ashley Harrell). Living in Valdez, Alaska from age two until my late teens, we didn't have TV. My dad picked up a damaged transatlantic radio when I was around four, fixed it up, and I began to listen to it a LOT of the time. My mom was a wonderful violin player, and she taught us all to sing and helped us learn different instruments throughout our school years.
As you mentioned, I could always mimic the people I heard on the radio, at school, and at home. One day, though, when I was singing something exactly like someone else I knew, my Mom stopped me, and calmly and lovingly told me that they really would rather hear ME singing...not someone else all the time.
Thankfully she also explained what that meant, which still was hard for me to understand at the time, though I do, now. I had a great high school music teacher, who also taught me to learn who I was, and how I best loved to sing, and to stick with that, though still being able to play around now and again, and imitate others.
I think that's one reason I really enjoy listening to Home Free so much. They are able to take what others have done, adapt those songs to their own nuances, add and subtract as necessary, and come up with a finished product that still lets others go, "Oh! I know that song...it was done by..." but then they very often also say, "But...wow! I like this version better!" Yet you can still go back and listen to the original, and see that they were quite faithful to it. They did, however, allow themselves to also BE themselves.

Interestingly (and to my great frustration), I spent about 12 of the last 15 years being able to only emit a few squeaks of my always-before very flexible singing voice. I was bent way forward with rheumatoid arthritis, and had next to no diaphragmatic room. Consequently my larynx didn't get exercised much, either. I could still whistle, but not with the volume and range I used to, but at least that kind of kept me from going nuts, because singing has always been such a main part of ME.
Thankfully, I had both hips replaced in 2017, have lost some weight, have been working to re-tone muscles--including my diaphragm and larynx--and am now beginning to be able to sing credibly once again. Still working on it, but NOW I think I better understand what "non-natural" singers have gone through. It's a whole different way of doing things for me, and I am determined to get back to a more natural state. One of the things I've had to start letting go of, though, is that I still have bad breaks once in a while, and I've been afraid to even try singing at any place where people don't know what I've been through, because I might make some awful sounds occasionally...so frustrating!!! The fear then ends up tying me up in even more knots. Working hard on letting go of that and just enjoying being able to sing again, at all!!!

I kind of knew, but to hear it this way made me smile. I'm a natural singer. The only downside for me though with mimicking, it can be anyone's voice. Even if it's bad. If there isn't a very good singer next to me and i can hear it over my voice my voice gets dragged down with the person with the not so great voice.😑

@@ms.nightmare4861 what he means about mmicking . Of course you don't wanna mmick bad singers because they have bad habits. Your trying to undo them . So you want to mmick good singers . But in your own voice that's. Unique to you. But without the concept of singing But making noice. Cause the concept of singing is going to get you to strain and your not going to have the resonance and tone and articlation your voice produce. And so you use your diaphragm not your chest and don't breath to deep. Find the balance and as you sing in your own voice sing soft . It's should be soft on the top as you go up and loud on the bottom
But being gifted isn’t just about mimicry, it’s about having control over your vocal tract. It’s not enough to have perfect pitch and reproduce any note, your vocal muscles have to be conditioned. Having a sense of how your vocal tract works is what separates naturally gifted singers from trained singers. Trained singers refined their mimicry to the point where they can hear a note and reproduce it by having a sense of how the configuration of the vocal tract will result in a certain note. It’s kinda like kinesthesia, in the same way that you can sense subconsciously where your finger is in relation to your nose or the configuration of your body, trained singers attain the ability to intuitively sense how a certain configuration of their vocal tract and breath support will result in a note and the power of that note. Except, for naturally gifted singers, it’s actually the opposite.
Naturally good singers don’t intuitively sense how the configuration of the vocal tract and breath results in a note and it’s resonance. They can sense how trying to sing a particular note affects the configuration of their vocal tract. Someone who is naturally gifted can configure their vocal tract just by thinking about the note they want to sing. I’m not joking, from my experience anyway, someone who is naturally gifted will raise their larynx just by thinking about singing a high note. They think about the note they want to sing and the vocal tract conforms automatically. The only conscious input made on behalf of the singer is the breath support, but that’s intuitive (the clarify, the difference between how I’m using the word “intuitive” and the word “automatically/subconsciously” is that intuition is conscious, the kinesthetic sense of the configuration of the vocal tract for a naturally gifted singer is not intuitive, it is automatic. You know how you can feel your heart beating but you don’t have to think about it for it to start beating, someone naturally talented can feel their vocal tract conform but they don’t have to think about controlling the specific muscles, they think about the note and the muscles do it on their own).
If this was just about mimicry, then all people with perfect pitch would be able to sing. That is not at all the case. There is much more to being gifted than copying notes, it’s about control and intuition. On the other side of that argument, this can also work against the singer. Someone who is naturally gifted will raise their larynx when singing high because it’s automatic. That is something that requires training to correct. In addition, someone who is talented might also start off singing from the lungs rather than the diaphragm which could result in tension in the vocal tract. There are three things you need to have a good voice. 1) You have to be able to mimic notes. 2) You have to have control over your vocal tract. 3) YOU NEED GOOD TECHNIQUE.

I am learning the theory of what I am doing naturally and then using their betterment techniques to perfect that section of my voice. It's blowing my mind, how much just 4 days of learning the theory of what I do naturally, perfecting it with good technique has done to the feel and sound of my voice
This is pretty true. My mental sense of pitch is great but when singing I have a tendency to accidentally slide off pitch, just because my vocal chords want to.
You are right. You need control when singing. I have heard a lot of people sing, some have reaally powerful voices and caant control it. But the voice is there , the control not soo much. Ive heard young kids singing , and wow they have powerful strong voices but their control is still yet to come, some kids dont even know they have it while some do. I love when people sing and you can hear the passion in their voice. I notice most talented singers sing from the heart and you can hear how moved they are while they are singing the lyrics. I use to sing but my tone is not there, power use to be. Control yes. But tone would be a different story lol.

This explanation extends to the phrase “having a good ear.” It’s not surprising that natural born talent, along with classical training, makes you very skilled at doing impressions. Think of Ariana Grande’s impressions, or even Jim Carrey’s-if you’ve ever heard him sing you shouldn’t be surprised that he has a beautiful voice
How does one define naturally gifted? I feel like naturally gifted singers are gifted because they learned early in childhood when their brains are much better at learning. Like how kids pick up new languages much faster than adults. Gifted means nurtured from a young age I believe
I don't think it's about age or nurturing because I never had that as a child, I don't really know why I can mimic people so easily though
Naturally gifted means you are born with it. Being taught and learning from a young age is still learning. That’s not naturally gifted. One of my daughters, at the age of 5 sang a song and it was insanely good. First time we’d ever heard her sing. I don’t sing my partner doesn’t sing. She’s naturally gifted. Doesn’t mean she can’t be nurtured. But we are not all created equal and it’s naive to think we are. We all have our own gifts.
I'm "naturally gifted" so to speak. I was never taught. I was singing with a pritty deep and full voice at 3 years old. My parents, brother and sister all tone deaf. My son has had natural vibrato from when he was 2 lol. Singing twinkle little star with vibrato was sooo cute. I have just started learning the voice theory and proper techniques though. It has taken what I naturally have and boosted it 1000% with proper technique. So even natural singers should still endeavour to learn proper technique.
Being naturally gifted kind of sucks though. You start above everyone, but gradually, people catch up to you. The pressure hits hard.
@@FDE-fw1hd A helpfull tip for the naturally gifted is to learn backwards. WHat do I mean? So you hear Tara talk about a "technique" she or singers do. 9/10 it is something you naturally do,.so you just use her tips to improve the natural techniques you have.
Having the insight from the perspective of being born with a good voice I would say it is the most difficult endeavor you could embark on. The pursuit of perfection is actually what brought me to study voice and practice vocal techniques. Pitch is very important. Hitting the right note In a piece of music and then making it sound pleasing with a good instrument. Sounds simple enough but very few can do it well.

OMG! I think I'm a natural born singer but my talent was not enhanced and my voice was not taken care of. I really love singing and when I give my best I really sound good. I also need a lot of confidence. I can't sing that well when there are people around.
Recently I've noticed my singing voice has changed, it sounds raspy/hoarse like I'm having difficulty breathing. I think because of stress and lifestyle. I also eat a lot of sweets and ice creams. 😔😢

I think i am the same. But i retained my singing voice. And right now i am doing better because when. I sang before i wasnt doing with any support. Now with support it feels like its another person singing. I too love ice cream but have told myself to only eat it when i really miss it. No more cold drinks as well.

i think that pitch falls under mimicking, with no pitch one cannot copy. also i for example have a generally lower range, so of handedly copying bruno or puth was always a struggle, so range definetly is a factor too

I'm a natural singer, I've only had one year of training and it was one lesson a week as part of performing arts and I was told that I didn't really need much help with my vocals. I also learn songs really quickly compared to most people I know, this probably correlates with the mimicry

I realized that I am good at mmicking other singers . But I can also do vocal excersizes . Well you helped me alot. I know if you knew what you knew now it wouldn't have took you ten years
i'll make an ancillary adjustment to what you said: i have an ear for music but did not take advantage of proper coaching. so i could hear all the notes of others properly but was stymied trying to imitate that. now that i do vocal exercises daily, i can recognize how my attaining what my ear hears is vastly improved.

I am one of the gifted but when my voice changed after i grew up adolescence..it was as if my voice was over and my singing talent started from the bottom up again..i was stressed but i learned more and learned who thought my voice improved many times over double than I thought..just sharing for new learner don't give up just practice and practice..if i can you can to..fighting‼️😅

I agree wholeheartedly with this. I think there is another aspect: the hardware. Some people are born with better vocal cords than others. I mean better vocal cords as in they have bigger range because they have more flexibility. Another one would be how strong their vocal cords are. Their TA is developed much better just because. I guess in basketball it would be like your default speed, your default jumping ability. your speed and your jumping ability is something you can work on though :) you can train your CT and TA muscle and make them stronger. However, being born with some good ones wouldn't hurt... and sadly I wasn't born with good hardware or good mimicking skill. Gotta work my butt off lol

Sometimes I hit falsetto when I don't really want to.I want my voice to stay solid at the high notes. How can I improve on that? I did try twangy-thing.. Maybe I couldn't do it properly because it didn't help much.

Try going up the scale with "neh, neh, neh, neh" - real whingy and nasally. That should combat the breathiness, but keep it to your range. It really helps with me, as my voice always wants to be full and rounded.

I've sang since I could talk just by listening and mimicking. I did well in musical theater with a Broadway style voice because I grew up mimicking Disney princess voices and Judy Garland.
I am a natural singer, should I still take vocal lessons or just vocal warmups?
Ive been writing lyrics since I was in the last year elementary (12 years old) and first time I ever heard my voice was me trying to sing, and it sounded horrible. As time went on I tried and tried, I never picked choir in middle school but I ended up there with little to no possibility of changing to another elective, as the rest were taken and there were limited options, and btw I had already done art in 7th, however twice was I caught singing, I often zoned out and I guess sometimes my whisper singing would go a note higher, not to mention that no else wanted to be there so we didn’t really try, and the songs weren’t difficult, some girl I knew since elementary overhead me and complimented my voice (though I’m sure it was the girl in between us who she was most likely complimenting) another time was during a competition between other schools and once again some kid overheard me and turned around so fast 😭 no one else was really trying and I guess he didn’t want us to be noticed or something, after that I would just lip sync unless the teacher was near then I’d try to participate. At home I do sing though most of the time is when I’m alone. However my voice sucks, I listen to almost everything and try to sing along to my favorite songs but I can’t keep up, I also don’t know how to use my diaphragm and can’t control my breathing, I even struggle when I talk (so maybe there is something wrong) I can’t play an instrument, I have 0 knowledge of music, such as notes, can’t play any instruments, or anything, the only instrument I ever touched was a clarinet in 6th grade and the recorder in 4th because it was mandatory. I have “a few friends” or know a couple of people online who do music, have their bands, can draw, do art with technology, can play instruments, are the same age as me and have been doing it since they were 16, but I only write rhyming words into sentences, kinda does hurt ngl. Every time I do try and fall short of being able to sing it breaks my heart and sometimes even cry, though I like other things and am in awe of psychology and other sciences, music has been the thing I deep down want to do and I won’t feel satisfied with just being a ghost writer for artists or a producer, I always wanted to sing and lead, but I guess that’s a little too much. I’ll still try, I’ll try to do warmups and anything to get me there and if I can’t guess ghost writer it is.

I do have a question about singers though. I was known to sing high notes like Jessie J and Demi Lovato. But my mom told me that's my voice's limit, that I can't do lower voices like Adelle. But can I change that?

There's something I never understood as a child and it was indeed mimic voices of others, singers etc. You just FEEL how they USE their voice. You feel how they sing. When they use head voice or from their diaphragm.
Good example: Celine dion Power of love. The word lady in chorus 1 and 2. There's a huge difference! But my friends don't hear it

I don't understand what you're saying I didn't see you in a long time but recently my voice box changed I went to a year through and nose doctor and they said that PTSD which I've had a time out for my job and all through my 20's and early 30s . I had no idea that I had any effect on your vocal box why should I mimic people because I'm just sounding like that I want to sound like my voice unfortunately I don't even know how to use this range it's so low and raspy sounds horse like complete voice box changed when I turned 40 soon as I started teaching my 9 year old so we kind of had to slow roll this on him because I feel bad because he's got the natural gift and I have three children and only one of them got it .regardless I don't want to try to sound like another singers because then I feel like that's not my sound I'm confused can you help me out a little bit with that and any advice you have on with the doctor said about my voice box I don't know how to sing anymore with his voice okay I know how to sing meaning less and wise and all other stuff I'm taking lessons for years when I was younger from literally kindergarten to like 8th grade okay and then also piano lessons everything okay so regardless but I had a very bad marriage and is very rough and I became a mother and a father overnight a lot of stress from that relationship and yelling I'm screaming and fighting in this room that or whatever well now I have a new voice box and your voice I don't know what to do with it but I definitely don't want to try to sound like other things I got to try to make my voice sound with his new voice box any suggestions ? and I just want to say thank you and I appreciate that you give this advice for free like this right now meaning putting yourself up in a video where someone has to pay for that some people will pay lesson to hear that I'm not kidding well you know that already I'm sure but so thank you for sharing with the world I have been following and listening and you are helping I just wanted to ask that question maybe you could respond it would be wonderful God bless take care Jennifer p.s I even took down my own UA-cam channel because I don't want people to hear this new voice box of mine so I set my email up and my little one is just playing with it I'm monitoring you don't worry so if you write me back you'll see my son all over it cuz I literally deleted it and so I said he can play with it and I put restrictions and everything any advice like I said God bless ,I own the courage to put a new UA-cam up I am afraid I don't know what to do this voice so thank you again , oh and please if you could let me know your theory on this or you're talking about trying to sing like other singers maybe that will help me I don't know because I have any voice that's like low raspy and doesn't sound too pretty to me but I don't know we'll see if you can explain that to me maybe that would help me what you just talked about 😊😅
I am NOT a natural singer and I wasn't in band. If you couldn't be in the band, you had to take choir... so I did choir, all through middle school and high school. My friends were theater people or musical. None of that rubbed off on me, but I love music. I love to sing, but only when I'm alone.
I can sing And i haven't had any lessons till now. I don't know exactly how i developt singing as a child i sang alot and when my voice started to mature around 14/15 years old i got beter. I started recording myself and heard it was good. (So i guess i'm one of those natural gifted singers) Since then i've been singing alot and it get's beter by the day. But i usually don't always do a warm up and some notes i reach don't always go well. Do you have any tips on how to use my voice the right way without damage it? Cause sometimes i oversing and that is damaging for the voice right? Could that be nodules that i may developt? Cause sometimes during the singing i feel like i don't have a great balance over the chest voice and head voice. I most of the times use the chest voice.
Sure i can mimic a lot of different singer's but why is it that only when the song is playing at max Volume do i get the vocals perfect!
There's thing behind mimicking, there's pitch accuracy, emotional delivery and dynamic control which singers copy, but at the end, singers' unique vocal timbre really float, and excuse me, in the Philippines we do what you called mimicking because we can't afford voice lessons, and I have a lot of relatives and people from hear who has no idea what even registers are but sing so good and has a unique vocal timber

What’s really frustrating for me is I have great pitch according to my mom, but my family, especially my mom who has many many years of singing under her belt and is quite good, said I have a very off putting tone. I always have and I’m not sure what to do about it.
Well i guess im a Natural Gifter because when i was a child when i try to sing my neighbors,Friends, and also my family they said that i have a great voice but when i try to sing a high note songs my voice it will crak.
Because we are poor we can’t afford a voice coach.
But now im a 23 years old and i love singing so much, i start to search a youtuber that can teach how to sing here at youtube 3 weeks ago, because i can't afford a vocal coach.
Then i Find your video about VOCAL WARM UP so i start to teach my self using that Video i Start to feel that my voice will changing but im not satisfied so i watch you playlist about improving singing. Very THANK YOU Sir Adam that helps me a lot.

iv been singing for over 20 years and im good ..but i totally agree ...i think good singers are like parrots ...we just mimic sounds and try to find our sweet notes.....but we have a good sence of melody and remember them well....i also think that lots of practice is very important as well as good cardio health !!!

I'm not really gifted since i started singing when i'm 10 years old (Self taught).
Natural talent rules everything because the only reason why skill fails it's because you working hard on things that's not meant for you for example you suck at singing but you Excel at Coding, cooking, or engineering do that forget about forcing things apon yourself, but if you have a passion for it then good news do it as a side hobby but don't focus to much on weakness but rather on strengths. "Trust me"

I have no idea how people can sing. I’ve always have had a monotone voice and I have never been able to sing.
whats weird is I could always mimic other singers perfectly, down to a tee. But I still suck at singing lol. I know how to get the tone and everything they do but cant hit the notes right.
I fall under a natural singer, I've never had formal training(I hardly count choir in school as any sort of training because it's not really something that teaches you to sing). I've always been able to match songs very well, I've always been able to learn and memorize songs faster than anyone I knew growing up. Though mimicking was never something I noticed when I sung with other people, even in groups people who knew my voice well would go "I could pin point yours even with others" so I never mimicked anyone around me in groups, which I find weird looking back at it. I've always been more uncomfortable about that because I'm super stage shy about being picked out, or even doing solos, partly because I feel like my vibrato was too much if I'm along, I shake...a lot if I know people can hear just me. Physically and vocally and I've always hated it.
I agree that choir, at least in school does not really teach you anything!
Choir didn't teach me anything either. I left because there was a girl who couldn't sing.

Haha that explains what the hell happened the other night. I had only ever heard Fleetwood Mac, never actually sung one of their songs. I was listening to "Dream" and when I was at karaoke, panicked at song selection and wrote dream down. I recorded myself, I do this to improve. When I tell ya, I had no idea what the hell kind of voice that was. I don't think I have ever sung in that breathy, light, ethereal tone before. It was so bloody weird like I got posessed by some other persons voice. It was bloody mimicking that I heard her voice in my head, and my body just automatically adjusted itself to produce her sound.
Interesting point. However, that is only one way how natural win vs trained. For instance, second way is bravery. There could many other options, including better voice timbre, sound and etc.
I've been told by a guitar coach that I have a naturally good singing voice, just by listening to me humming a melody.
I've heard this from family members and I've heard it from friends, and recently I've been more curious about what I'm capable of if I just put more training into it, or I guess I need more guidance in what I can do. I'm able to mimic certain sounds and kinda mimic some techniques
So why are they better at mimic?

Naturally born singers are who sing captivatingly without much effort. May be the person has worked on it in past life. Gift is definitely there. But i believe this gift is aquirable. By practice, by listening commendable singers, by praying .

You got it it's there I can mimic other people but I have my own singing style I can make up stuff and free style. Just practice and sing from your heart.
I learn to sing opera without any trainings. Maybe im naturally gifted singer and i think i have the potential to sing opera that just need a proper tecnique
i was paranoid about my singing, but this really helped. i rememebr being 6 years old after school and all my founds would be outside listening to me sing, and they would be saying things like how do you exactly sound like (whatever song i was singing) and i always responded “i just hear it and do it” and for my whole life up to my age now (14) i thought that that was common sense and some thing everyone could do- until recently i was trying to teach my sister a riff she listened to herself thousands of times because she loves it, she shows me it for the first time and then i end up being the one teaching her how to do it because i mimicked it instantly. being naturally gifted seems like a good start but now i train my voice every day, and have a vocal range of a b2 to a e7 :) i’ve started training sicne the beginning of thsi year and alreaddy have done over 200 hours of training and my voice has strengthens and improved so much and being naturally gifted really makes me feel less stressed because even after doing all that i still feel paranoid but this helped a lot tyyy

I only know one natural singer. It's Adele. She isn't as capable as Celine Dion, but I love her voice! It's her tone. It's captivating!
Adele? Of all people? There are far more naturally gifted people. And Adele has also trained her voice on top of her gift which is what you’re supposed to do. Same with Whitney Houston who was trained by her mother after her mom discovered her gift. Same with Beyonce whose parents put her with a vocal coach at a very young age once they discovered her gift.

Im a natural voice singing i can sing high notes but i struggle on some songs with low voices because i get used to sing high
well don't focus in the low notes if you can't really hit it because it's out of your range.
I'm a baritone and I'm fine singing in the 1st and 2nd octave and I can also sing normally in the 5th octave using the falsetto and headvoice.
A person with a natural gift just uses it without thinking. It’s automatic
