  • This item has PATHE GAZETTE OPENING TITLE (01:47:45) - (48:03). A loudspeaker with cockerel is seen on the left side of the screen - accompanied by the sound of Morse Code - bleeps.
Letters appear from the speaker (and some flashes). Letters read Pathe Gazette, which is replaced with First in 1910 - Best in 1934. This is replaced with Speaks for Itself. Now all lines appear from the loudspeaker together - looks very loud - Pathe - Gazette - Speaks for Itself - First in 1910 - Best in 1934. Both picture and sound then slowly fade out.
The full title reads "Berlin and Aldershot "GALLANT GESTURE" General Sir Ian Hamilton brings back the Gordon's Drums - returned to the Regiment by President Von Hindenburg."
Nice close up shot of General Sir Ian Hamilton in uniform. Three heavily decorated men (Sir Ian in the middle) with drums in front of them.
Sir Ian speaking into microphone, several high ranking officers behind him. General brought back the drums from Berlin War Museum. Sir Ian talks about German President, General Paul von Hindenburg.
Top shot of the military pipe band marching along the street. Several shots of the drums being ceremonially marched along the ranks lined up in a square. An officer reads the message from German President. Follows a march past.

"...that the old allies of the Battle Of Waterloo..." At 1:28 I just love that the British and German officier snap their heads up and look at each other with an expression of "Aight, sounds good" after hearing that.

"old allies of Waterloo" the sadness that the remark evokes. England and Prussia were allies many times in history

I think Hitler thought the same might happen against the common enemy of communism, and Churchill proposed such a move after the surrender in 1945, that Britain, France, America and rearmed Waffen SS and Wehrmacht soldiers push forward and attack the Russians to destroy communism. Cooler heads prevailed. I wonder how that would have gone?

General Sir Ian Hamilton passed away in 1947. He was said to have been a fan of Adolf Hitler but before it was known of Hitler's war intentions and everything else that followed. General Sir Ian lived through WWII to see Germany's second defeat. He also served in the Boer Wars and WWI. You can't say he didn't live his life! He died aged 94.

Here's something to ponder. If the 2 surviving sons of Queen Victoria died when they were gravely ill when young, instead of surviving as they did, then the heir to the Throne of the United Kingdom, would be Victoria's daughter Victoria. She died in 1900. So the heir to Queen Victoria would be Kaiser Wilheim II of Germany. King of Prussia would become King William V of the United Kingdom, and Emperor of Germany would become Emperor of India in January 1901.

As an ex-British Army infantryman footage like this makes me lament the loss of so much tradition. Of course things can’t stay the same forever. We have to adapt. But, through no fault of its, the British Army is now in a pitiful state and, from an infantry point of view, the concept of the Line Regiment has been all but spent. Shame on successive British governments.

Weird especially how Poland still didn't let go of invasive plans after their forces were kicked out of Silesia by the Freikorps in 1921.
