But how they could fight in such tight formation with long swords?

The "Hielan" Charge was quite simple. They would pack up in a tight square and charge forward, as they fell upon the enemy the front rank would fire off any firearms they had and throw them aside then draw swords. This would be the same for any other rank of the formation, then the formation would spread left and right as more ranks fired into the enemy and then as the square closed the distance they would smash into their enemy with the broadsword and the targe. The targe was a small buckler style shield held on the wrist opposite the sword arm. This tactic devastated the English at Killiecrankie, Prestonpans and partially at Culloden before the cannons and horseman rode down the Jacobites slaughtering them. There was also a battlecry called the "Hielan Yell". This is what they try to duplicate in the video. It was usually started by a low but loud groan followed by yelling and hooting. This yell is believed to be a partial inspiration to the Confederate's "Rebel Yell". That and influence from battle cries from the native Indians of the Eastern woodlands.
