I followed your directions and made backlighting for one of my tanks. I love it. Now, I need to buy more LED strips and pimp out a couple of other tanks. Thanks!
This is genius. This is something that I feel like I should have thought of before I started searching Amazon for MUCH more expensive means of accomplishing the same thing. I am going to hit Walmart after work today and knock this project out tonight. Thanks!!
I've been considering different background options and this backlight idea has been on my mind ever since you set up the haunted tank. Thanks for reminding me.
Been working on a lighted background system for my new rack (12, 10 gallon tanks). This is a lot more simple than what I have been working on. I like it.
Immediately I thought of the way I would alter this great project. I have a 60g I could try this on. If I can find a large enough white foam-board that would graduate the light more evenly across the background vertically. Great jumping off point. These backgrounds add a lot to the effect of viewing a tank. Thanks for the video and the inspiration.
Hey I know you posted this comment 3 years ago but I’m curious if you ever tried it vertically and if so how did it turn out? I want to have the option to have the the “sun” come from above during the day and below at night maybe even an moon from stove the tank. I found this video on UA-cam called “turning smashed tv into realistic artificial daylight” and I’m going to try and experiment with it to get a true effect of the sun in the distance.
Love this. I’m planning on using one of those submersible LED tubes that you can get on eBay. My hope is to use the suction cups they come with to stick to the back of the stand. Also I bought some of that translucent window cling film instead of paper. I’ll give it a try.
Cool ideas>>>>>>>>Let there be light..................the more light the better fish babies look====you will probably start to notice and observe additional fish behaviors and go back to watching your tanks with friends and family for longer time frames (like you used to when you began this hobby>>>>>>>>>>>>>fun and relaxation. THANKS FOR AN INEXPENSIVE WAY TO UPGRADE OUR AQUARIUM and in turn our lives
Good idea, I'll probably want to try little Velcro stickers to mount. So it is also removable/modular. I've been loving watching my shrimp, but I don't want to stress them out too much with constant overheads.
There is a window film that is translucent white and the flex light that would be just like that but you apply it with water and a squeegee so it’s not gonna be a problem if you get a couple drops of water on it. EBay also has the submersible light bars and you can buy them for like 10 bucks with a power supply already. Programmable ones are like $15 with the remote and you could change colors all the time from the remote.
Just found this, very useful! I have a question though. Do you have the frosted film at the back of your tank? Seems like some other videos show that they need that one but yours does not
I was thinking this would look great on my frosted tanks too. Mikaela fox you just buy some frosted window tint. You can get a roll for pretty cheap. Hardest part about applying it is making sure the tank is clean.
Do you ever notice any bizarre behavior when you do the light patterns? I have a tank with one of those LED hood lights that do that & it seems that when I let it cycle through the colors my Blue Velvet shrimp go CRAZY! So...I tend not to use it. The ramshorn snails don't seem to mind at all but I was just wondering what your observations may have been.
I don't care for the clamps showing on your beautiful scaped tanks but the inexpensive back lights seem to work really well. Tanks look awesome lit up.
So here’s my idea and I don’t know if it will work but.. I want 2 light strips on one tank.. one at the top one at the bottom So I could set the top one to red and the bottom one to yellow and have a gradient sunset, or pink and blue gradient, etc 🤔🤔 do you think this would work??
RGB led mixed with uv led (1-10watt per led) plug into arduino wire it with (wifi) esp...and you got smart led (even dim to swith off, or day-night automatic switch) that's the way to go, don't use styrofoam though, led creates heat, and it's on the whole time, pvc pipe should be more adequate, better yet aluminum railings (to heatsink it)...come to think of it CO2 system can be wired along with those (there's probably tons of avalailable pwm pinouts left on the arduino) 😀
Could you not use that waterproof stick on shower screen frosting. Or frosted light defusing the type you use for false sealing tube lighting. Ever way it's cool and inexpensive Good job.👍👍👍
I tried backlighting with parchment paper as a diffuser, but it showed off the filter and all the cords and hoses too much. Using the white paper is a much better idea!
+AQUAPROS Hi, Can we dose Hydroponic Nutrients A & B to the planted tank ? Usual its sold as 1/2 Kg or 1Kg bags, which should be mixed with 1 liter of water to make a concentrated solution... If Yes, How much should be the dosage in ml as well as the frequency of the dosage please....... Thanks !

So simple, so cheap and yet so effective. Going shopping now to get some.
Thank you from Manchester, England.

I REALLY want to try this!! SOOOOOO many color options :D
YASSSSS
Awesome idea, I think I want to try with the lights on the top instead, kinda give it more of an immersive feel/ underwater look. Thanks man!

been looking at ADA Light Screen and Current USA but luckily I saw yours!! thanks man!
Clear, well spoken, informative. Great presentation. Thank you for the great idea.

What a great timing. Bought a milk frosted background ( maybe better tgen a white piece of paper ) today only need a led strip. Thanks for the tips
Cool! I can't wait to try this.

Interesting, Was unfamiliar with backlighting. You got me intrigued. Thanks.
Waiting on my leds. I had my white cardboard laminated for it to be more waterproof. Can't wait to try this!
omg yes!!! Cant wait to try this on my 65! Thanks for this vid Mike :D
Kool build, makes the tank pop. In a good way
Thank you for sharing it with us! I will be trying this. 😉💡
No privacy cling film!? Madness!!! I like the USB LED strip idea.
Hello from Brazil. Thank you for inspire me!
Good idea, I'll probably want to try little Velcro stickers to mount. So it is also removable/modular. I've been loving watching my shrimp, but I don't want to stress them out too much with constant overheads.
That looks awesome! Definitely going to give it a go.
Thanks for the video!
This idea is fire! Literally 🔥 🔥 🔥
Inexpensive idea that looks really expensive. Nice!
hi! would it get the same effect with a frosted background?
That looks neat.
Hey boss just tunned in on this video, and I appreciate that information on the DIY, it's for my wife's Discus tank 65gall 😎
This is exactly what I needed to see @.@ TYVM!
This is amazing! Just ordered all of the supplies, thank you so much!
cool video man! thanks for the info!
Looks good, seems easy to try, sounds like a winner
This looks really cool! I might try this out.
I love this idea...thanks!!!
I just got my light strip in the mail today!
This is amazing! Gotta try it!
Hello, we are from Brazil and accompanying here ... Congratulations !!!

That moment ur so broke you can't make a "cheap backlight" until next month
DIY Aquapros is back! lol awesome tutorial 👍🏼
Simple and effective. Love your tanks btw

thnx for the idea! 5 below has these lights....i can place it at the bottom of the black background paper......
Great work mike. Cool tip
I'm thinking about doing the same thing, just with a frosted back insted of white :)
Thanks for the video.
Snow How do you frost the back? It sounds really (pun sort of intended) cool.
I was thinking this would look great on my frosted tanks too.

Phil Pauley Thanks, that sounds like a great idea! I’ll have to give it a go.
Nice DIY project!
Really nice idea 👍😉
Love! Definitely going to try.
AHHH, that is SO clever thanks for sharing this.
Great video as always!
Thanks!
I just made mine on my 60 breeder and it only cost me $5.00.
I love it!!!!
GREAT IDEA
Super easy
Peace ✌
Very good idea. I like the look
Great tutorial!

Awesome video
Love and support from India❤️
Looks good!

Really nice
Any recommendations on where to get large sheets of construction or matte paper like you have used?
You ever find out?/
Specifically for a 55 gallon
Been a little bored with my tank lately, time to spice it up again
Very cool 💕👍
Welp, I just figured out what I'm going to be doing for the background on my frog tank!
Excellent 👍 brilliant Sir
Appreciated , thanksfully Txs.
Ever try these LED lights on a blacked out background ?? Wonder how much light would reflect through, kind of like on a goth setting
So here’s my idea and I don’t know if it will work but.. I want 2 light strips on one tank.. one at the top one at the bottom
So I could set the top one to red and the bottom one to yellow and have a gradient sunset, or pink and blue gradient, etc 🤔🤔 do you think this would work??
why not
thank you man for this tutorial! 500$ of ADA light box must be too much for me..haha..It's the same price as the whole tank of mine..

This is really cool! What stands are you using for your tanks? I'm looking around for one for my 40 long :)
Very informative thx
Been a while since you’ve made one of your oldschool videos :)
Love this idea, the only flaw is that I always seem to have algae to varying degrees on the back glass which isn't the easiest to get to to clean.
anyone know what the plants are in the tank at 6:57?? especially the tall carpet on the bottom 😍
Love it!
Could I use the frosted background instead of the white poster board
Yes!
Fantastics !!
Dollar Tree has the single usb, sometimes have the double. Amazon/ Target also carry multi usb towers
Sounds like current USA will be coming after you lol just bought mine could not make this earlier ? Hahah
I wonder what effect this would have on a standard printed background?
Could you not use that waterproof stick on shower screen frosting. Or frosted light defusing the type you use for false sealing tube lighting.
Ever way it's cool and inexpensive Good job.👍👍👍
I’m going to use plexiglass to the size of my tank with “L” brackets to hang.
How many tanks do u have??
Mike this is so awesome can you just make me one thanks!😆 I’m gonna try it thank you
Thanks for stoppin by :)
These tend to overheat and die if not mounted on aluminum or glass. The 10 watt rgb led flood lights do much better and are weather proof.
Is the background frosted?
I tried backlighting with parchment paper as a diffuser, but it showed off the filter and all the cords and hoses too much. Using the white paper is a much better idea!

GOOD👍👏👏👏😄
Good
We need a update on the blue shrimp please
10/10 would do
Ugh, now I’m regretting painting the backs of my tanks 😭
Current usa makes a nice set up with backlighting , pretty pricey thou
For durability I'd think white plastic is a better backer.
Aw man, just finished painting the back of a 120 and now I wanna scrape it all off. 😅
Video starts at 4:25
Bro when I get a tank I'm definitely doing this
just stuck a new poster to my empty space between my 2 3D backgrounds... guess I'l be taking it off any day now...
Thanks!!
