However, some shots were more straightforward, with a simple fake punch with the 2 actors in the same take. We then had to manually warp the arm in place so that the fist would connect with the other actor's body. Regardless of the method used, it was a lot of painful, brute force cleanup and frame by frame hacks to get those shots to work.
Congratulations! I was thinking how the arms looked weird and yall having to animate the shots to match makes alot of sense. I feel the final result might not have been worth the effort. A common technique is to just remove a frame or two of the punch to get it snappier. Coupled with slightly undercranking the camera. I have not seen this multi-plate approach before though. I would also love to see examples before this one.
yea, when they first talked about it, I did a frame by frame, trying to "guess" what the trick was, and I thought it was maybe created digi double for a couple frames, to move arms where they'd contact, and some physics of reaction...

while sam is definitely selling it a bit too hard with the "we've filmed this video", since niko obviously already knew about the video, it's not impossible this is the first time niko saw the BGI.
The shot with the Niko is a separate shot from the rest. There is a cut as soon as the bee flies out of the window. The screen whites out for a frame or two and then the next clip is inserted. He probably wasn't there for the rest of the shoot.
If you're looking for some CGI to react to, I recommend checking out "Walking with Monsters/Dinosaurs/Beasts" trilogy to see how it holds up 20-ish years later
Road House was surprisingly fun thanks to that fight choreography and effects work. Given how dynamic and hand-held the camera was, I'm surprised how well they were able to do those comps.

I’m no vfx/cgi artist at all but I find all of this super interesting. I always go to all the accounts you mention in any episode to see and learn more and that got me thinking, maybe you could do an episode where you just show clips from other artists you like and follow? I know you’ve included other artists clips in a few episodes before but it would be super interesting to know more about where you find inspiration, who is up and coming, different studios and their specific skills if any and so on. Like just taking a look at the vfx world in general, not just what ends up in movies. I think that could be one or several nice episodes! 😊
At the end of the 3 Body scene with the ship the guys talk about the helicopter shot not being related to the plot, more there as a bit of a flex, but actually the point of the scene is they are trying to recover something from the wreck, they're pouring water to limit the fire damage

@@AndreiFierbinteanu Good point.
That bee video kicks butt, and I never even noticed the fence being CGI, even though obviously it needed to be. Excellent stuff!
Thank you again for providing video chapters, so we can avoid spoilers. Much appreciated.
Thats not a bollywood movie but a low budget tv show for older people.
But anyway its so funny
What's it called?
@@andyjohnson4907 i dont know the specific name but u can search it as indian funny seriels.
They mention it;s a soap opera when they jump off the bus.
@@andyjohnson4907 10:25
@@andyjohnson4907 It's called Nazar. Don't know if it has English subtitles or not.
Wow, I didn't even THINK about that fencegate. Seamless!
Every time I see cameras go thru small spaces I assume they're CG. Michael Bay does it a LOT! Starting with Bad Boys II. (There is a whole breakdown in the BTS about the CG doors complimenting the circular track they built for the Haitan shootout). But here, it was seamless. Kudos!
They missed the part where when we enter the mirror shot the sign in the back is still backwards as well as the clock, we are essentially still looking at the "mirror world" @6:48
As an Indian, I can agree that Indian TV serials have the worst CGI 😂
Theres a Mirror Shot in Van Halsing where Dracula is dancing with Kate Bekinsale and You can see her but not him, I think they do her face replacement
I would suggest to have a look at Hardcore Henry
Pretty sure they have covered it atleast once in the past cause I have a passing memory of it without having seen it and this is the only place id guess I've seen it before.
i love watching wren and his two dads on the couch
I rarely comment anything on UA-cam, but this one video I had to. I just wanted you to know that feeling of wonder this video gave me is amazing. I'm a lil' high after a good hangout at the end of a great day, that contributes, but this wouldn't work the same without that one piece of quality content.
Your precise explanations (I'm just now remembering the Moon Landing conspiracies debunked on a VFX basis), alongside your genuine taste for discovery and inspiration, infusing into your own creations (and also remembering Realistic Lightsaber Fight) and all kinds of experimentations (we see you Wren blasting cameras at neverending scales). All that is truly mind-opening and really contagious.
I'm reading what I'm writing, and it's probably difficult to read me as not hyperbolic or ironic, but just know I'm really feeling all that I've said. You guys single-handedly added a whole level to my cinephilia over these years.
Thank you for this moment, please never stop sharing your passion and your love for discovery and creation.
Sincerely, a long time silent French fan

That baby was pretty chill about being thrown off a cliff.
The funny thing is, Roadhouse did not sell those punches
I love the mirror magic at 7:28 also because of the thought into the sweatshirt, having Miami backwards as well as the poster on the wall.
Shoutout Betterhelp for putting their clients through conversion therapy.
The Road House technique is actually used in a lot of Hong Kong films
Which ones
A common technique is to just remove a frame or two of the punch to get it snappier. Coupled with slightly undercranking the camera.
I have not seen this multi-plate approach before though. I would also love to see examples before this one.
yea, when they first talked about it, I did a frame by frame, trying to "guess" what the trick was, and I thought it was maybe created digi double for a couple frames, to move arms where they'd contact, and some physics of reaction...
Which ones?
I'm sure Jordan appreciates the guys replaying that shot over and over... 😂
Which shot?
I'm sure you were the only one looking.
@@qkhan69 I encourage you to make one comment and shut up about it, instead of spamming every comment section like a crybaby
@Rujewitblood lol why have you taken time to comment that, is this such a big issue for you? Reevaluate life man.
17:28 holy crap Clint! The detail on the shadowed part of the wood (can see if paused) on the right, the wood grain?!? Yet in motion @ 16:39 it’s not even noticeable?!? Insane detail Clint!! Absolute Legend
Y'all not talking about the TRUCK SCENE from Road House is insane to me lmao. Sure the flights were good, but woof that truck scene was like a turning point in the movie for me 😂
16:30 While you were gone we fimed this video, that you're in.
while sam is definitely selling it a bit too hard with the "we've filmed this video", since niko obviously already knew about the video, it's not impossible this is the first time niko saw the BGI.
yeah that was weird 😕
I think he is talking about the CGI fence shot, maybe they didn't tell him about that specific shot.
Maybe they just meant the compiling and editing.
The shot with the Niko is a separate shot from the rest. There is a cut as soon as the bee flies out of the window. The screen whites out for a frame or two and then the next clip is inserted. He probably wasn't there for the rest of the shoot.
Indian tv serials vfx and physics are whole another level . Especially bollywood 😂
Thank you South Indian guy!
Came back to watch you guys after 2 years... Don't know why I stoped
YES! I commented a while ago for you to react to 3 Body Problem and I've only just seen this vid :D awesome stuff! 😁
You should definitely react to the Witches of Eastwick! It has some crazy effects for the time, and a great cast.
If you're looking for some CGI to react to, I recommend checking out "Walking with Monsters/Dinosaurs/Beasts" trilogy to see how it holds up 20-ish years later
Terminator 2: Judgment Day special effects STILL hold up today and that's over 30 years old now.
Did anyone else notice for the Mirror Magic shot, the text was flipped on the canvas in the background? Just a cool detail, really sells the shot.
Road House was surprisingly fun thanks to that fight choreography and effects work. Given how dynamic and hand-held the camera was, I'm surprised how well they were able to do those comps.
For the liquid dancing, there's a good chance its J Lube mixed with a dye and the right amount of water to kept the consistency right. J Lube is what farm vets use, but is also whats used for the world biggest bubbles blown.
I read that it is a corn starch mixture
Corn starch pretty solid
Does anyone have a link to the account? I can't see a mention of the name or a link anywhere?
@@johnc_I am wondering about the same thing, I’d like to look up the liquid dancing video. Does anyone know where to find it?
[[ The Peripheral ]] Season 2, episode 2. Around 25th minute. Invisible car effect with visible cup of coffee on top. Thanks!
Are you a time traveler? For the rest of us, there's only been one season of The Peripheral released so far.
Hahha not at all. It's season 1 for sure! My mistake. But if the same scene (with invisible car) appears on 2nd episode of season 2, I will get a tattoo of time traveler. Lulz

Bruh should had a trigger warning, im so spooked from the scenes in resident evil and ghostship with wires cutting people up nano wires just brought all that back 😂😂😂
I’m no vfx/cgi artist at all but I find all of this super interesting.
This.

Another amazing video
DOCTOR WHO! Old and new, so much content there for you guys 😅
I was watching roadhouse with my brothers and they commented on how well the fights looked, It really looked and they thought people were actually hitting each other and they really were impressed by the constant camera movement and a different position of showing every angle of a punch and I was waiting for you guys to comment on it.
If you want some janky CGI to react to, there is a fantastic rhino attack at the end of Eraser: Reborn. I think you would enjoy figuring out what went wrong.
Is that a sequel to the Schwarzenegger "Eraser"?
@@goodlows_ghost It seemed like more of a remake? Hard to tell. No Schwarzenegger involvement for sure.
Here's a fun theme: Bible/religious movies. Truly some bad AND great vfx! From The Ten Commandments to Left Behind. Have a look at the walking on water scene from The Chosen. They got pretty creative with how they made that.
They reacted to the parting of the Red Sea scene from The Ten Commandments in episode 103. Thought I would mention it in case you haven’t seen it!
Bibleman! XD
@@puzzle_em I did see that one. I think there’s some other cool effects from those old movies that would be interesting to break down too.
@@K8EE00 Oof! Some real gems there!
just saw the nano wire scene the other day and having read about nano wire in numerous sci-fi and cyberpunk books, i felt it cool to finally see a really great version on the screen. Especially with them being invisible made the scene so much better.
Guys, how in the hell have you never done either a vfx or stuntmen react or both to Into The Badlands!!!!!?????! They put so much effort into that show.
That fence shot was really good.

Bollywood will never fail to disappoint us with these masterpieces.....
Marvel and DC should hire those guys
That's not Bollywood movie , thats low budget TV show
They really should, considering the CGI on Tummbad and ZERO looks way better than new MCU and DCEU movies.
It's a TV show
I know this is a joke, but I genuinely hate Bollywood and wish Corridor would stop giving it attention. It's just horrible filmmaking, full stop. Kung Fu Hustle is a perfect example of how you can make a good film that happens to be corny. Bollywood is just corny and nothing else.
You realise that most Hollywood productions already outsource their VFX work to Indian companies, right?
The nano-slicing reminded me more of the Elfen Lied introduction. Invisible hands dicing people up in a corridor.
I froze when the Road House bit came up. That's insane
10:22 that's not Bollywood, that Indian soap opera. It's completly different. Maybe you guys should do a vfx review of upcoming Indian film Kalki 2898 AD!
Indian movie....brahmastra. available on hulu in the usa. It has great vfx

Man that Roadhouse reveal is ALOT of work, but it looks great.
I think it looks terrible, awkward, unnatural, and janky.
The fight of Post Malone was really bad, when watching I thought his opponent was completely CGI.
@@cloudoftimethank you! I remember watching and I couldn’t figure out why it looked so odd. Fun and dumb movie but that fight technique really looked bad to me also.
@@cloudoftime Yeah it looks horrible, fake, and just plain odd. I'm not seeing what they're seeing, for sure.
Please do react to "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.". Lots of robots, spaceships, time travel, gravitonium, Inhumans and of course more importantly Ghost Rider, Lola etc.
It's got quite some stuff to get its own episode.
I am convinced that Wolverine’s arms are trolling Henry Cavell’s mustache from Justice League
I've been waiting for your guys to do The Three Body Problem!!

Thanks for finally answering why I thought the fights in Road house felt weird.
Literally the best channel on UA-cam
That is not bollywood. Those are scenes from some cringy daily TV soap opera in India.
12:44 Cus its a SOAP OPERA!!!
That's so funny, I fly drones so I immediately noticed the real gate & my first thought was, "That's a dang good looking fake gate, that has to be either Clint or Peter."
I knew there was something cool going on with the Road House fights! It looked sooo good
13:23 it's a tv series called nazar
Nooooooo you guys could have added movie vfx from india rather than that serial like stufsss🥺
VFX recommendation: the first few minutes of "You've Got Mail" is a CGI animatic of New York. Also has an impressive transition to a physical camera and camera move into a window
You guys should do an episode that’s a contest of “is it vfx or real?” But not with cake
3 body problem is definitely one of the best series released this year
Please make a whole BOLLYWOOD episode and react to ADHIPURUSH
Niko giggling does more for my mental health than Better Help
The acolyte! I need a stunt break down! The martial arts are so cool, especially how they added the use of the force.
13:46 "How low can you set the bar for the next shot and still get away with that"
Please, I want to see you guys compete on such a great statement about videomaking ❤
They already proof it 😂
Damn! I never noticed the fence before!
Great work.
I know you said "they have 3 suns" but I HEARD "they have CapriSuns" and then got jealous because I don't have any CapriSuns. Thanks A LOT, Better Help. You ruined my day.
I hope the Indian Television industry sees this and realises how insulting this is
The punches in roadhouse looked ridiculous lol
That Bollywood baby toss is no joke like a TIM AND ERIC effect, like is it MEANT to be that sorta "intentionally goofy" style? lol
Very good as always
