Not only is Jeffrey Wright awesome... just as he is, he's an insanely talented actor. To find out he has such a beautiful taste in film makes me appreciate him even more! Cord Jefferson's picks are equally great! Makes me want to seek out 'American Fiction' at a cinema for sure.
Malcolm X is a great pick, and has in my opinion one of the greatest shots in cinema history. Not necessarily from a technical or visually arresting perspective, but from a storytelling perspective melding mise en scene, camera movement, and performance. Look at the shot when Malcom ascends the stairs to meet Elijah Muhammad after being released from prison. He goes from behind the bars of the banister and ascends, from hope to anxiety and prostration. Denzel's performance inverts the spatial metaphor of ascent. It's filmmaking of the highest order.
Fabulous shoutout for Bert Williams!! Legendary vaudeville performer. I, actually, never knew he did any films!! So cool!
