Walking tour of the HAIGHT ASHBURY Neighborhood in San Francisco, CA

- Today, I took my grandson on a walking tour of the historic Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. In 1967, hippies, from all over the country and the world, came to the neighborhood to celebrate what became known as The Summer of Love. Hippy history is still celebrated here today, more than 50 years later.
We had vegan pizza at Bizza, found the former homes and apartments of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and The Grateful Dead and I enjoyed a personal trip down memory lane.

I was born in 67. Most of my elementary school teachers in the mid 70's were past hippies. They introduced me to sixties folk music, Okay to recycle, protest, and wear 2nd hand clothes fashionably. Oh... They were a lot of fun. ☮️☮️
That is so awesome Rocky. Thank you for sharing this memory with us. 😄✌️☮️
I use to live in the Castro and would take the bus to the Height all the time. I miss SF a lot. Glad y'all enjoyed your visit.
I wish we could’ve found that bus lol! 😲😄👍
My dad drove us kids through that neighborhood on our trip west from Indiana to California in 1968. I can still remember the amazement of the hippies everywhere. I was ten and my dad kept saying to keep the windows rolled up tight...I guess his generation saw them as wild animals but he knew his kids should experience it. I also saw my first public boobs among the hippies that day.
lol what an awesome memory, William! Thank you for sharing it with us. How funny! 😆😳👍
You had me laughing when you said, "I left my heart in SF, I left my lungs in SF." Gives the song a whole new meaning! 😍 I have friends that became Vegan and rather than look for a dedicated Vegan Restaurant, they inquire into one of the regular restaurants asking if they have a Vegan offering. Many do and its higher quality than what's offered at the street cafe's but probably more expensive. Whole Foods might have had Vegan offerings at their food bar (however, I haven't been to WH in a long time since Amazon took over.) In the future there is Rainbow Grocery Cooperative in the Mission District that offers all organic produce; vegetarian and vegan options; gluten-free etc. Anyway, glad Mason was able to eat! Fun Video Steve!
Hi ER, it’s funny that you mention Whole Foods. That’s where Mason ended up eating almost every night of the trip. They carry vegan options that he really likes and there was a Whole Foods fairly close to our hotel so it worked out pretty well. One of our visits to Whole Foods to share on this channel of course lol! Thanks for the other suggestions. They are all good. Unfortunately he is just extremely picky when it comes to what he is able to eat. Whole Foods seems to be one of the only places he can eat. 😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve That's great Mason found a good place to eat. I lived a short walk from Whole Foods in Berkeley and when I was too tired to cook after work, I'd walk there for a fresh organic dinner (for take home usually).
You did great Steve!
Thanks for the interesting and scenic video. You are a good grandad 😊
Thanks very much! 😄👍
Vegan in Fillmore, Hayes and NoPa. I'm glad it's not just me that gets winded. 20 years ago I could spring up those hills without breaking a sweat. It gets harder as you get older. ;). I live three miles from Haight and rarely visit more than once a year. It's truly another planet.
Thanks for the recommendation for next time judge! And yes, It does seem like another planet or at least another lifetime ago! 😳😄✌️
Mason is so sweet and beautiful, I know you are proud to be related to such an awesome young man!
Thanks, Thomas 😄👍
They had to put a fence up on the stairs of Jerry Garcia's house so people wouldn't disturb the people in the house. I loved Jerry and the Grateful Dead. Saw them many times over the years. I saw them just before Jerry died. I miss the fun concerts they put on. A lot of the names on the sidewalk were members of the Grateful Dead at one time or another. Thank you this was a lot of fun.
That’s awesome that you got to see them in concert. Thank you for sharing these memories with us Maria. 😄👍
Oh Awesome to see Janis Joplin's appartment! 💖 🥰 everything is Amazing to see there! I will definitly have to go! Thanks so much Steve & Hi Mason! 👋 Great Smiles & Fun!🌈🌞
I hope you get to go with Sharon. It is pretty amazing. 😄👍
Mason has really beautiful eyes. Hope he's having fun .
I agree!!! 👁️👁️!💚
Thanks for taking us on your tour of San Fransisco. Hey i was thinking a out those hills.
Thanks for coming along Sally 😄👍
Poor Janis, not even a plaque to honor her memory. I still love "Piece of My Heart."
Yes, still one of my favorite songs too! 😄👍

I was born in 1967, so I have this on my bucket list 👍🤠. So fun! I like the way the buildings stayed the same. The artwork looks fantastic 🌼🌼😎
That is awesome Tex that you were born in the year of the summer of love! 😄✌️
Good morning to you Steve and Mason. Thanks for the tour lol 😍👍🚃
Good morning and thanks, Linda 😄👍
Glad to see some more of the houses and scenery!
How crazy was that artist about the no pictures? Sign or no sign? If he truly wants to ensure the "privacy" or some form of "copywrite" type claim on his work, he should not have it on display out in PUBLIC. The public sidewalks are just that public property. Also, not a great way to sell your work! He just hurt his own ability to live from his work. smh
You guys were graceful, as usual, even when faced with craziness. Hippies are not the mellow, accepting people they once were!
Thank you for this video! I have always wanted to go see Haight-Asbury! I may have to watch this video a few times. I wonder what that area is like in winter. Does it get very cold there? Your video is awesome and almost like being there!
Take care of yourself! If needed, stop and sit on someone's stairs for 5 minutes or so. You are pretty fit and active, but those hills are brutal!
Hi Sharon, I know, right? And yes, it gets very cold there in the winter. Very foggy and very windy. we looked out and got really nice weather for our entire visit, but even in the summer it wasn’t guaranteed! 😄👍
The good news is the fog rolls in…the fog rolls out. Whether or not you think it’s cold would depend on where you come from. Always plan for all weather. Pack shorts, long pants, t-shirts, tank tops, long sleeves, a sweater, and a jacket. That said, it’s rarely ever super cold or super hot, so that’s great. It’s hard to tell people from out of town what to expect. 😂
born 1958 chicago during 60's every block on my street had head shops hippie bong shops black light shops incense shops every 12 ft there was this same stuff in chicago

Great video. Janis Joplin is my favourite artist. Thanks for showing where she lived.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😄👍

I really enjoyed this video as always, the architecture is fab you can almost feel the cosmopolitan atmosphere although I did feel for you walking up that Bill you did a lot better than I would have done, looking forward to then next one x
Thanks Angela. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😄👍
Hi Mason and hello Steve! It is hard walking up and down hills. Good Video and thank you for taking us with you!! 🌺
Thanks for coming along Sho!
24:27 - There is ALWAYS one everywhete you go. I was yelling at the screen "you are selling on a public sidewalk dipshit, he can do whatever he wants" Anyway, I have really enjoyed the SF Tour. It has been years since I have been and I love that this has been a grfather/grson adventure! Be Safe!
lol, I know, right? 🤪
Hi Steve and Mason. Love seeing where you two are visiting.
Glad to hear that Virginia 😄👍
Hi Steve, thats a lot of healthy walking.I enjoyed the walk around the Ashbury.Mason is a good companion.
Glad you enjoyed it, James and yes, he is! 😄👍
Mr. Steve & Mason, I enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for sharing 💕 I was excited to see Janis Joplin & Jimmy Hendrix living quarters. You had a long walk in the beginning; but you made it. Greetings from your friend in the great Peach 🍑 State of Georgia 🍑 I've fallen in love with Mason. He is so humble and a great walking buddy.
Love you guys. ❤🎉❤🎉
Thanks, Janice and right back at you! 😄👍

Steve singing 🎶🎵 “I left my Lungs 🎶🎶 In San Francisco.”🎶🎵 😂😂
It’s a beautiful city but, you’re right it’s looks really hilly! The architecture is gorgeous, as well as, beautiful trees. I love trees, of course I live in Colorado where we love our trees. There are so many places with phenomenal Art, except for the guy who acted like an idiot and started yelling at You. If He doesn’t want to be filmed, then He shouldn’t display his Art on the street! I’m very protective of You, I don’t like people disrespecting You or anyone else! It was great to see Janis Joplin’s, Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia’s homes. I really enjoy vacationing with You! 😁😁 Steve, another great video, as usual. Blessings to You, Jim and Mason! Have a safe trip Home. ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks Nancy! 😄👍
Some areas are “hilly,” but we have plenty of areas that aren’t. ❤
Steve- i was huffing and puffing with you as you were walking up those hills !lol
It appears that your Grandson was having a great time walking and smiling! oh what it is to be young !!!
lol thanks for coming along with us Ernest! 😄👍
That was a really fun video. Thanks for all the exercise you did for me!😂😂. That did look super interesting amd maybe a bit scary when that guy started yelling at you. You're making my bucket list longer lol.😂😂🎉
lol, along the bucket list the longer you have to stay around to complete it! 😄☮️✌️
@@theretiredlifewithsteve excellent point!!
Walking the city is NOT for wimps, no doubt about that!! Walking a mile in SF is nothing like walking a mile in Palm Springs. We have better weather (imo), but you have flat land...but really, does it all even out? The cost of housing, for sure, favors Palm Springs, however we can be outside way more here. God knows, never a dull moment in SF! Always something going on, and you really don't have to spend money to find fun things to do. It was fun seeing things again through your eyes, lots of history in San Francisco.
Hi Derek, your city is awesome. And yes, there seems to be something happening on every corner. And I thought we had a lot going on here in Palm Springs, but nothing like your town! 😳😄👍
Hey Steve and Mansion l really enjoyed your video on your walk around to own
Thanks Syreeta. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😄👍
Leg work outs...whew ! You made it all the way, you two! 😊😊 those stairs seemed brutal 😮.
Brutal is the perfect word for it Tawanda lol! 😳😄👍
I hope visit there someday
San Francisco has Hills !
Boy, it does it lol! 😳😆👍
The Valley of the Sun is about a hundred miles wide, mostly flat. You can choose to go hiking and mountain climbing if you want. I don’t do hills any more. Wonderful tour of Haight Ashbury, been a while for me, so many names to remember! 🏳️🌈 Paul
Hi Paul, I didn’t think I did hills anymore either until Mason tricked me lol! 😳😆👍
The Valley of the Sun is a moniker for Phoenix Az. I think there are other ones too.
SanFrancisco is so cosmopolitan. The best way to see and enjoy it is walking, but it is a workout. That's why SanFranciscans are in such good shape. Notice that Steve ?
I think you’re right Spencer. No one needs to go to a gym there. That’s for sure lol. All they have to do is walk out their front door and walk to work. It is pretty unique how almost everything in the city is technically within walking distance. 😄👍
Love this video Steve!
Thanks April. I’m happy to hear that. 😄👍
Thanks for the tour of the Haight!
Thanks for coming Kat! 😄👍
Hola steve thanks again for a interesting video 👍🌈
Thanks, Tom 😄👍
Thanks Steve. And Mason
👍
I luv the vibration in Haights Ashbury so colorful positive, really nice walking tour of this neighbourhood stores and restaurants; gosh what a daunting task to find vegan, San Fran needs vegan restaurants
SF has every kind of restaurant you could want. You just have to look. Including some very well-known vegan options.
I know, right? I thought there would be a vegan restaurant on every corner lol! 😆👍
I’ve always thought of it as one of the food capitals of the world, so I was very surprised how difficult it was for us to find vegan restaurants. I’m sure they probably have some great ones. We just didn’t want to spend the majority of our time trying to find them. 😄👍
I’m glad you guys had a fun day.
Thanks, Samuel 😄👍
Great walk. Felt like I was with you climbing those hills Steve 😂 enjoyed it very much. Mason didn't shed a bit of sweat 😅. Thanks again. Another ten for you both ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thanks steve
Thanks for coming along Steve. I hope you didn’t get as winded as I did lol! 🤪😆👍
I think that hill at the start was 15th St-very steep! I am your age Steve and I could not do it, so you did well! On the map it looks like a shortcut to Haight but.... Did not know Hendrix lived here. I'm sure no plaque on Janis house was to keep public attention away. Haven't been up to the Haight in a while. It look fairly busy so that's good. That street artist was a crazy I suspect. Sorry he went off. I knew most of yhose 60's folks on the sidewalk. It's nice to see your grandson likes my kind of music. Thanks for the trek!
Hi Andy, thanks for coming along. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😄☮️✌️
Hi Steve and Mason...loved this vlog...very interesting and the stores and houses were so cute... colorful...liked the photos of the past. musicians...you will sleep great after all the walking .....thanks for vlogging your trip...its fun to see SF .......take care ....... Deborah 🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it Deborah and yes, I definitely slept like a baby that night lol! 😆👍

Hi Renee. Glad you enjoyed it! 😄☮️✌️
Thank u Steve for taking us to Haight Ashbury! I can't get over how many hills u climbed! I wanted to call an Uber for u both at one point😮!
Mason & u take the BEST selfies! 🩵📸 I love Mason's Jim Morrison tat! So much greats as far as music & Haight Ashbury!

@@theretiredlifewithsteve ALWAYS! ‼️
Looking at Bizzas' vegan menu made me hungry ! They have a lot of appetizing dishes there , it's hard to pick one
It was very difficult to choose just one. Unfortunately, I chose the wrong one lol! 🤪
Hi Steve, your physical effort was worth it to reach the Haight Ashbury district!! ☮️💐☯️🌱🌈 My partner spent his formative years in the area as a musician in the support band for Big Brother. It was during the Vietnam era and I'm sure as you know it was a very colorful but challenging time for everyone. Still great to see the area now looking so vibrant and busy, life goes on. Sorry you had to be snubbed by the guy still living in the Jim Crow era that he so rightly despises. But I guess he doesn't realize he's still keeping it alive, in his attitude toward you!! 🤔. I'm sure you've taken a million colorful memories home with you after this trip and thanks for sharing them with us!🌈😊
Hi Catherine. Big brother in the holding company? How awesome! The stories he must have. Thanks for sharing with us. 😄☮️✌️
@steveinpalmspringsca Yes, Big Brother and The Holding Company. the warm-up band was called Marble Farm. They had a band practice house on Cole & Oak and I think at one point there was the possibility of touring with Big Brother, but that never happened as Janis Joplin left them to join Full Tilt Boogie. That was a mistake on her part as I think she really needed and missed the camaraderie she had with Big Brother. If you're a Janis fan, you might care to read the book her sister Laura wrote titled "Love Janis"❤️
I remember when I was living there back in the 70s 80s I was walking on market Street and these people were handing out cards and I would talk to anyone I still do, the card said peoples temple on it. And they asked me to join and I said yeah I’m not interested. Thanks anyway and walked on.
Yikes! 😲 glad to hear that you kept walking! 👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve as a kid, I was extremely street smart . But I wish I saved that card.
Steve.... Don't you just Love San Francisco? 2 cities I love... San Francisco, & Palm Springs.
Yes, I agree Spencer, they are both awesome! 😎👍
Falafel sounds delicious! Can you have food from a Mediterranean Menu Mason?
Unfortunately, he doesn’t like falafel or vegetables or pasta, so his vegan diet is extremely limited. 🙃
Oh, Steve! If I knew you stayed beyond the parade I could have advised you which Muni(s) to take! The 33 Asbury goes there from 18th and Castro; the 37 Corbett also does at 17th, Market & Castro! The 24 Divisadero also climbs the hill for you and crosses the base of Haight and you can get a 7 or 6 bus!
Also, you weren't that far from a Whole Paycheck up at Church and Market near the Safeway for snacks!
Hi Jon, i’m surprised that San Francisco makes it so incredibly difficult to find the right subway or the right bus to take. We searched online we searched on maps and we spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get from one place to another and half the time we just had to guess because we could never figure it out. 😳😲😩
We walked by the Whole Foods, but we figured there would be plenty of vegan places to eat in the Castro. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find one. But part of that was because Mason is incredibly picky when it comes to what he can eat.
@@theretiredlifewithsteveif you come back again you can get detailed SF Muni routes and maps online pretty easily!
Verrrry Interestttting........talk about a "trip" back in time. I've always liked Janis J back when I first saw her on The Ed Sullivan Show (Sunday night must watch then) with her weird style and high times blues rock n roll. That drew me in but I had to grow up and mature before I really appreciated her music to the fullest. Never too late in music. Glad you two had lots of adventures while in SF. Minus the weirdos taking away from your vibe.
Hi kb, glad to hear you are one of the original Janice fans too! 😄 And it really was like going back in time, being there again. 😄✌️
Steve, you were scaring me to death, I kept yelling "get an Uber!
Thanks Steve, I was winded, but since I walk about 5 miles every day, I wasn’t too concerned. I’m just not used to hills. 🤪😄👍
this is terrific!! I love SF... made my morning watching you two tour around. Did you ever catch your breath? lol
Glad you enjoyed it DB! I’m still trying to catch it lol! 😆👍
Did you guys go to Alcatraz. I would love to see that.
Unfortunately, unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time. I’ve seen so many UA-camrs make videos of their tour of Alcatraz that I feel like I’ve already been there though lol. 😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve yes seen many vids too. But would love get the vibe 👻💀
Remeber 1967..seems so long ago...Glad Mason's interested.
I know, it seems like 1000 years ago! 😳😲😆👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve yea...was fun back then though
Maybe need to do some more cardio...lol JK Loved this video as usual. A wonderful grandson too.
Hi Jane, I typically walk 5 miles a day, but walking up super steep hills at the age of 70 will still get you winded! 😳😄👍
haha I had to laugh at this. I had to walk with my son from 42nd street to the world trade center. No telling how many breaks I took. huffing and puffing all the way. I almost called a cab. I love your historic vids.
Hi Mary, I guess as long as we get there in the end, that’s all that matters lol! 🤪😄👍
@@theretiredlifewithsteve YES! lol
It seems as if you took a very strenuous route to the Haight. From the Castro it’s best to walk or take the 24 Divisadero up to Haight Street and then walk or take the 7 Haight.
Hi k, yes, I let Mason find the path on his phone and he accidentally chose the most strenuous route lol! 😳😲😆
Yeah, I was wondering where the heck you were. I live in the inner Mission and can walk to the Haight easily from here without busting a lung. It's not a short walk, but not deadly.
so sad to see the businesses closed
They tried to put a Walgreens on the street - it was burned down. The space is now a Goodwill. :) You don't mess with the Haight. But's that's really what SF is all about - no chain stores - mom and pop all the way. Chain stores pay a hefty price to reside in the City.
Well, I didn’t know that. It’s nice that it’s very mom and Pop still. 😄👍
Grea stroll
Thanks Corgis!
I loved y before. Are you going to China town. You look like you are
having fun.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to get to Chinatown on this trip. 🙁
You two should have went to see the Full House home. While you were there lol
I wanted to, but we just ran out of time. So many things to see and do. We needed a month to see everything. 😄👍
Yeah... I've noticed some stores, such as Ross and TJ Maxx, are now adopting the concept of having a "bouncer" or two at their entrances to avoid any "riff raff" problems.
Thanks for sharing that with Otto. It’s sad that it’s come to that, but I guess I’m not really all that surprised. 😲🙃
😂😂😂. Summer of ‘67 there used to be buses full of tourists (looked a lot like you!), driving through the Haight taking pictures of all the hippie freaks. One of our friends, Monster, procured a camera from somewhere and ran along beside the buses taking pictures of the tourists. We thought it was hilarious. Scared the shit out of the tourists! ✊🏼
Hi Judith, lol thanks for sharing that fun memory with us! I think I was one of those tourists in 1969! 😂👍

2 things you need to know when visiting S.F. , good walking shoes and wear layers.
Good advice djr! 😄👍
.6 miles, but most of it is UPHILL!! lol You take the #27 to Haight and then the #7 to Ashbury! LOL So I guess No Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream At H/A for Mason. Janis also had a house over on 122 Lyon near the panhandle of Golden Gate Park.
Hi Hobo, unfortunately no dairy for Mason! 🙁 Thanks for sharing that with us! 👍
Hey Steve the reason for them not having a plaque for Janis Joplin cause people living there now don't want a crowd in front their apartment, and probably they don't even know who she is❤
Hi Jon, I’m sure you are right about both! 😳😲☮️✌️
Oh wow, you stopped in front of the Haight Asbury Free Clinic. Is that the exact location where Abigail Folger worked?
Hi Erica, thanks for mentioning Abigail. I didn’t know she worked there. It seems like it was the original building, but I wouldn’t be able to say for sure. I visited Abigail’s gravesite in Colma about five years ago and shared it on my other channel. I’m glad to know people are still thinking about her. 😇
The 33 bus picks up at 18th and Castro, rolls up over the hill and comes down to Haight and Clayton. You shoulda just took the bus. Even the route you walked seems to be way more hilly than the easy main roads.
Hi Spike, the bus routes are very difficult to find for out of towners. We searched everywhere online on our phones and couldn’t find any. And then Mason accidentally took us the most difficult route lol! We had our free bus pass for the day so we wanted to take the bus, but it wasn’t meant to be that day. 🤪👍
Whoever said vlogging was an uphill battle was right. 😂
lol yes, literally! 🤪😄👍
Please be careful when filming strangers. I worry about your safety, especially in a large urban area. Please please be cautious Steve.
Thanks John, I wasn’t even filming him or his artwork. I just happen to be walking by and I was filming straight ahead just as I had been doing for the previous couple of miles. My iPhone only turned toward him when he started yelling at me. I didn’t even see him or no he was there until he started screaming. Unfortunately, these days, if you are out walking in any large city, you can run into people like this everywhere you go. Whether you are filming anything or not. Sadly, the only way to avoid situations like this is to stay home and never leave the house. thanks John! 😄👍
I would have opened the Lyft or Uber app
I am 32 and could not walk up that hill.
Pace yourself. We're not timing you.

Artist dude is a bit of a weirdo. He has a thing about people with cameras. he thinks people are trying to steal his art. I’ve had run ins with him when I was out taking photos before.
Hi Charles, what a small world that you run into him too! 😳😲
I like your videos, I really do and I especially love San Francisco and know those areas and visited them recently, but I say this in the nicest way, do we really need to see 10 minutes of your heavy breathing and your nostrils? Lol. I know that the response will probably be "if you don't like it don't watch", but the problem is I DO like watching, but I really feel that your videos need a little bit of editing. Just my opinion but there is a little too much tendency to focus on mundane things for too long like eating a piece of bacon or something like that. Lol. Obviously one is not going to always be interested in the subject matter, but just something I hope you consider to be a little constructive criticism. I watch very few, other than you, Jordan the Lion, Scott On Tape, and Scott Michaels.
Hi c, thanks for the feedback. I’ve been making videos on UA-cam for about 10 years now. My preferences always make them as short as possible And in the past, I’ve edited our long videos down to 5 to 10 minutes, removing all of the heavy breathing and bacon eating lol! The problem is almost no one likes those short videos. So I started making long videos and leaving everything in and my videos started doing a lot better in views. But the other thing I’ve noticed since I started making these videos 10 years ago is that no matter what you do, no matter how long or how short your videos are about 50% of the people well like them and the other 50% will hate them. In the end, as a UA-camr, you just have to do what makes you happy. Even though my longer videos have been much more popular than my shorter videos, I really don’t like making the longer videos. So going forward I think I will be going back to my very short, heavily edited videos. Or, I may just stop making them at all. After 10 years, the constant criticisms, about every single aspect of every single video I do does get a little old. 🙁
@@theretiredlifewithsteve please don't stop! I'm an a****** lol. I guess I was feeling depressed this morning for obvious reasons. I'm usually not critical of things like that but I guess I was feeling cranky.. please forgive me Mr Steve!. Signed, fellow baby boomer born in 1955. Oh and PS, I could never do what you and the other guys do. The constant criticism would get to me after 5 minutes.
