hi Warren, thanks for the awesome video, just wanted to let you know something happened with the screen capture, seems all footage from the session is in low resolution.
It depends on talent of drummer and sound youre going for. When I record our band its real drums-our drummer is excellent and plays to a click like a machine (S.O.-Grand Demise of Civilization-Pat Ruhland🤘!). Blast beats, gravity blasts, etc. Everything is mics. Only "sample sound" is the kick is both mic'd for the "boom" and a trigger track recorded in real time. Only edits are deleting the occassional double triggers which happen at the speeds we play. So i agree with the commenters here-real drums in metal are alive and well. I'll add we had a Spectre studious submit your mix session and 80% of the comments were "r2d2" "sample replace" etc so I think there is a general misconception that if its fast and tight it must be programmed. I took those comments as a compliment to our very talented deummers skills and a clean recording🤘🤘
Your apporach to this was absolutely spot on. This is how this particular style of death metal should actually sound like. Approaching this like we do modern death metal today would have ruined the entire performance.
Holy crap. Your mix sounds like everything I loved about 90s death metal. It's right up there with Morbid Angel "Covenant" and "Blessed are the sick". Good job.
This is that '90 death metal sound. Nothing fancy, overproduced, polished, tons of sampled drums reinforcing it. Just plain simple good old school raw death metal.
Never would've expected to hear Warren mixing something like this! Honestly he put together an absolutely great sounding old school death metal mix. I would've loved to hear a bit more 'click' on the kick drum, a bit more emphasis on the guitar transients, a brighter mix overall, and a couple dbs down on the vocals. Otherwise I feel like he nailed it.
Finally metal god has heard my prayers, this is the best gift of my metal life! Finally I can see Warren mixing death metal! I’m feeling marvelously super well!
When it all came together I was like "this is how I want death metal to sound". I like some death metal, though i'm mostly at home in other extreme metal styles. And of what turns me off of a lot of death metal is just how it's mixed. Thin, lifeless. Very little of it is actually heavy, it's usually just fast. This is actually heavy. Awesome.
I feel like the same can be said about thrash. Which is making a comeback and what I've heard lately sounds amazing. The mixes on Havok's V album are pristine. So I think that'll be coming down the pipe for death metal as well.
This has the proper 90's Death metal vibe, which is great to hear in a modern setting, as everything that made that sort of sound, has fallen from the norm, and people still fall into modern techniques when trying to emulate the classic death metal vibe. so I'm super into this. Bravo sir!
There is something about one of the world's biggest Queen fans mixing this kind of track that just makes my day. Thanks so much for this, Warren. Cheered me up no end.
I found your take on death metal processing sounds much more appealing to my ears. I had no idea how much blood, sweat and tears would be poured into this by you ."Well done" and Thank you, very enjoyable"!
That was...... actually pretty good warren. Shows you got solid ears to be able to take a genre you might not normally listen to and do a banger of a mix anyway. And yeah, its pretty 90s sounding. Thats a good thing, by the way.
As a fan of this type of death metal (and having not heard Malamor in 2 decades) and not a fan of modern production, i had a blast watching you mix this thing. Your mix was killer, and destroyed the original mix.
I really appreciate the mixer didn’t make an another “modern plastic shit” of a death metal band. I really like “Warren’s classic rock version of death metal mix”, sounds very natural and distinctive (which is the most important)! As a death metal player I wanna say - killer job, sounds awesome Warren!
watching this i realize he did more with the Bass drum tracks then I did with the whole mix. This is awesome to watch. I have a lot to learn. I think that is what makes this stuff so fun. There is no end to the learning.
Been mixing metal my whole career, and I always love a bright , trashy and characterful mix with this genre…. But Warren’s mix definitely knocked it outta the water 😏 golden ears, and a passion for music.
I'm no metal fan, but this format kept me watching the video through. Hope you'll make more GoPro stuff Warren. This is great content, just awesome - like being a fly on your shoulder!!! I also enjoy the minimal talking. Very educational to see a master at work. Thanks!
Hey Warren! Stuff you did on 42:00 with room mics is only achievable if you have that much experience. Amateur has no idea if decimated and reverdb room mics would fall into the mix that well. The way you placed room/oh's behind close mics was just some pro level stuff. I'd say you don't need to have ssl for these , but trained ears. Not sure how to pass that knowledge At 46:36 you eq toms, but honestly I just cut anything that's not hits from the tracks. Too much hassle to make them work within mix, and short transient + massive reverb do wonders to stoner/doom (picked up from Rick Beato).
Wow! I love it! I hope you do more of mixing genres you don't usually do. I feel a lot of new upcoming engineers are stuck with just the genres they like, this will be helpful for them.
These are my favorite types of videos you do on this channel. I always leave them so inspired. I end up taking mental -- or literal -- notes about which frequencies you're boosting as well as the cool tricks you're doing (like putting a transient designer on a reverb). Also, it was crazy when you switched back and forth between the original mix and yours. The original was insanely bright, but I didn't realize just how bright until you switched from yours. But then when you switched back to yours it sounded too dark until my ears adjusted. It's amazing what our ears can get used to and how quickly it happens. An issue I have is I tend to make my mixes too bright because it always sounds more exciting initially.
Warren. Hope your marvelous. Wonderful mix. Always enjoy your content. I listen to and mix lots of metal. Don't tell me you didn't love mixing that tune. Keep up the good work.
Happy New Year for PLAP staff and ALL PLAPers, and all good people :) This is interesting, seeing Warren way outside of his comfort zone and looking at how he is using his experience in new area ;-)

Hey Warren, being a death metal guy since the 90's, I must say I liked your mix. Lots of bottom end very natural sounding and very old school! Congrats man! I would not complain if you had mixed my old albums!
Warren, great mix! I love that the drums still come through sounding like real drums and not samples that is so common now in the DM genre. You’ve retained great balance in the entire mix AND removed the icepick brightness from the overheads. If I would do anything, I would bring the overheads and snare mics back in on their own VCA group with some M/S Eq and compression and just slightly pepper it back in for just a little more cymbal definition. Or not, haha! I’d have to hear it in the mix. Cheers! And HAPPY NEW YEAR!
This is exactly what I needed. Instruments and recording aren't machine perfect as all my recordings and sent tracks are. Real raw stuff is what I prefer but mixing it best as possible is where I need to learn more. Thank you!
Cannot wait to watch this after I’ve submitted a mix this week. So much fun to mix a genre I don’t know and had no reference points to rely on. Great opportunity Warren - thank you 🙏
Warren you have been such a blessing. This is my favorite genre but I’ve been following you for years, and it’s a delight to see how you interpret it like a pro. In the end, I love the raw unpolished but punching sound you made. Reminds me of a mix done for the band Blood Incantation, a death metal band that opted for that similar rock approach you’ve done
Loved watching this video - I'm into death metal. Had no idea what Warren was doing 99% of the time but fascinating seeing an expert at work. He said he's not too experienced in this genre but he's obviously got the skills and knowledge to improve any mix. He explains everything so well, he'd probably be the world's best music tech teacher as well as top producer. Best video I have seen recently, thank you!

This has been an absolute blast to hear your take on this. It is just fantastic to see you stretch your legs in this new space. Very awesome. You did awesome.
Congratulations Warren, I really enjoyed your mix, it sounds very powerful and organic. Personally I really enjoy old school death metal and I myself have a band here in Argentina called Santuario, with which we recorded our first album in 1997. Most of the sound engineers at that time did not know the genre and had a much more approach. close to rock or hard rock in those productions. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion for music mixing and production.

I can't stress enough how awesome this mix is.. Really, you've captured the artistic intent of the song and elevated it even higher.. What mixing should be- NOT factory line assembly. Quite inspiring really. That vocal sounds downright demonic 🤘🤘

This was fantastic to watch, and as someone who doesn't mix death metal, your mix sounded amazing. Most definitely a huge step up from what you originally got
I totally loved this ¨hands on, no BS, no over producing /editing absolutely everything¨ It actually sounds like a band with real humans playing instruments ( how rare these days haha) ... Thanks for this video It reassured my Idea of going ¨Hybrid¨.
Mr Huart, you nailed it. Totally the kind of mix I love in Extreme Metal, most extreme Metal I do listen to have that flavour, and you mixed it "Old School Sounding", in the 80's way. Haha mixing it like Classic Rock! Haha
@@Producelikeapro I didn't see a single beer can on your console so you clearly didn't mix it like classic rock.
I think most of it just has to do with the band not quantizing everything more than the mix.
@@TransistorLSD this is the single funniest comment I have ever seen on an audio production video
A lot of modern death metal sounds too digital, metallic and cold sounding. Your mix sounds old school and warm which I prefer. Great job!

I couldn't believe how classic and 80s it sounded, he totally smashed it.
Death Metal should be warm imo, there is room for bright in say Black Metal or Crust Punk, but not in Death Metal.
