Hey friends, I do want to clarify something. I mentioned this at the end of the video but I know a lot of you don’t make it to that point. This doesn’t mean I will stop traveling. I will continue posting traveling content because I love to travel! This is just a home base for Austin and I. To keep our belongings and to host family. I’ll post updates of the property a few times a month but my content will still revolve around consistent camping and traveling! Just wanted to clear that up for you guys!

      Huh... why ?
For all you know maybe there's a city with necessary services a few miles away, as for green maybe there's a easily accessible water table all that is required is drilling a well, maybe he doesn't want to take out a huge loan and be in debt for years and this was dirt cheap, maybe his family is nearby, etc.
Not to mention from the vegetation this looks like the US Midwest so probably "near" (by US standards that is, not European ones) tons of fabulous site, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Arches, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, Zion, Grand Teton , Death Valley, Yellowstone, etc.. the west of the US is full of places to go see and at least it doesn't look overcrowded so if he likes peace and quiet he found a great spot.

Ethan, 72 here and I've lived mostly off grid since I was your age. I love it. A few tips? Leave the hood of your truck up overnight. So many critters will try to nest and eat your trucks wiring. Paint your water cubes black. they tend to grow algae otherwise. This looks very much like my property here in Central Oregon. I do have some juniper here and just lately noticed I have two bluebird couples building nests. So blessed. I hope your new adventure is a blessed one, too. It will be a never ending war with the damn rodent issue.

The algorithm is really working on this one. My name is also Austin, I'm just a 25 year old mountain man, I now run a farm with my boyfriend (now fiancé) in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. This video being recommended to me is a bit uncanny! It's really nice to see more and more of the LGBT community getting into agriculture and ranching. I would definitely take a look at implementing permaculture principles, make nature and the land work for you and heal your soil, it's worked out really well for us, rotational grazing, silvopasture, and we just recently put in an agroforest. Hope all goes well in your farmsteading, ours has been extremely challenging but very rewarding!

You were on the right track with using that steel scrubber thing to stop the mice but that’s won’t be enough. When I was growing up, our house backed up to a corn field. Every fall when the farmer harvested the corn with his combine, thousands of mice would scurry from the fields across our backyard and into the neighborhood. During the first few years, some of them would get into our house. Even though it was a new house that was, we thought, totally sealed, a few always made it inside. Mice can squeeze through holes or cracks that are as small as 1/4 inch, or the width of a pencil. They can also fit through holes the size of a dime or nickel. An air conditioner repairman told my dad to stuff steel wool into every gap around every pipe or cable into the house and then seal everything with caulk. After we did that, we never had a problem with mice ever again.

Nice new "farm". If you never had animals before, it does take awhile to settle into the routine of them and you. The daily watering, feeding and letting out is mundane, but very important.
Chickens 6 - 12 (Rhode Island Reds) will produce 1,200 to 2,000 eggs annually (200 per bird). Eating 2 to 4 eggs per day per person, gives you almost 100% of your protein. In your environment, you will need a coop, a hen house and a covered area protected from predators (hawks, coyotes, and what not). After 3 years, Rhode Islands are okay meat birds as well. Note: adult chickens are hella expensive, and you are never sure of when they started laying their first eggs, so best to purchase chicks in late winter early spring and raise them up. It takes approximately 6 months before your first egg. But it is a good growing experience and they are fun to watch!

I have a farm in Australia, NSW. Always start with planting the fruit & nut trees you would like to have because they’ll take up to five years to start producing. Before you buy any trees check that they’ll survive the weather/climate you are in. Grow organic for strong trees - use rock dust to dig into your soil because your soil looks deficient. Add organic matter- get a composting toilet so you can enrich the soil around trees - don’t use on vegi patch, obviously. Looking forward to your progress 🤠👍🏼

If you’re doing some sort of farming or animals, you can get an agricultural property tax rate. Are you in Colorado? My brother has 40 acres. Hannah‘s wife got goats so they could have agriculture status. The first year they got a check for $3.20 for shearing the goats fur. They left the goat business when somebody came and put a flyer on their mailbox wanting to buy Pondosa pine trees. The first year with the trees, they made $7700. It works perfect, they thin the trees out and fill the holes in. Then they put seedlings in the holes.

This is temporary until I get my permanent shipping container home finished.

Something else to consider is standing your van legs in metal bowls and keep them topped up with something nasty to keep ants and spiders out - diesel maybe!

I live in Puerto Rico. I left New York City years ago after selling my apartment buildings in Brooklyn New York City. I bought a farm from a Pastor who had a stroke..I am thankful for my grandparents for teaching me how to be the best farmer. I have 94 acres of land with a river flowing through the middle of my farm. My parents are from South Carolina where they had a farm. They along with my grandfather taught me a lot about farming and homesteading.
First and foremost you should get solar panels and a wind turbine . Then you must get or purchase a Rain Water Harvesting system with a water purification systems and a water storage system. As for the Rats get synthetic cat urine and place it around the outside of your house and barn. A cat just might kill your chickens. So cats are out of the question. Learn how to cycle your land. Avoid GMO fertilizers post and fence in your property with NO TRESPASSING signs around your farm. Unfortunately you may have to arm yourself.
I wish you the best of luck with your farming endeavors.

First thing you need is a well and electric power to run it. If you are too far from the grid to get power, you need some solar and a solar power-able submersible pump. At some point you will need a septic tank and drain field where you build a house of some kind. Forget about using a shipping container as a house; nothing but trouble and expenses and building code problems. (See Tyler and Todd's videos for example) Either get a mobile, or find a kit house that you and Austin can help finish, and resell some day at a profit if you need to move on. Maybe a "tiny house" if this is just an escape/vacation location. Looks too dry there to actually "farm", but you would need a reliable well for even a home vegetable garden, which you might have time for once you have a stabile residence to live in. Good luck to you and Austin.

That's surprising to me. I know it's just undeveloped land out in the middle of nowhere, so I'm sure it was relatively cheap, but still. 30 acres of land is 30 acres of land.
