Yes, I’m the same as you two. I’m not sure why it’s never been on my radar. I think Schiff’s interpretation seems the most well informed as usual and comes through perfectly in his playing.
I would not talk about "mental problems" by Schumann in his early 20's , but the form of some phrases and the sudden deepness , as some hallucinated motives , like extatic passion are already in the perspective of a mental"difference" and a forecast farewell to this bloody world !

Als Kind hatte ich diese Aufnahme "Klassik für Kids - Robert Schumann" Dort gab es, neben der Musik und den Kommentaren der Moderatoren, auch immer wieder Hörspieleinlagen und diese konnte ich mir merken. :-)

And , if you really want to know , I would recommend two versions which are not existing . The first by Dr.Bruno Walter ( listen HOW he plays the piano with Kathleen Ferrier in the Dichterliebe !) and the second by Rosa Tamarkina , a version able to destroy the most courageous listener . Hear her Scherzo of Chopin . . . . .
But , if you allow , for Scarbo, I prefer the (live) version of Argerich of 1978 which drives me really mad . . . I nearly cry every time upon the beauty and the magic of Argerich's pianism . . . .

You either never read the score or you havent read schumanns writings where he explains how to interpret his own indications in his scores, id suggest you read them and go back to the score you will realise schiff is always slave to the composer, non matter which composer, his interpretation sounds different because doesn't ignore indications which other pianists do

I mean it's unmistakeable, I'm playing this piece in a recital 10 days from now and my edition is henle verlag and hce it in front of my while o listen to this interpretation. He plays exactly by schumanns instructions, take the score out ad follow along you can't not see it at this point. All the accents, legaturas dynamics, the only argument that one could make is that he is not musical and he is just putting the score into sounds but that is actually a matter of opinion, but whether he follows the score is really not debatable

For me Ferrier is really coming out from another world " the open hearts and open voices" she is able to sing with a voice which is absolutely clean of the whole school and tradition of "singing throat phrasing" (what I hate ) like a Fischer-Dieskau or Callas , great musicians but with this horrible singing manierism . Ferrier sings with a naked voice . An angel . Her Brahms (alt-R) or Mahler are a soul elevation to be found nowhere else .

The exceptional Schiff in a subtle and refined reading of this far-too-seldom-played work by Schumann.
A beautiful rendition. After man-years I have come back to this piece-Schuman's imagination as incredible. So very poignant in many f the 'movements'
