Episode #5 Rap Poetry Cimarron Elementary

Digital Story is a video series created by Galena Park Independent School District to shine a light on the many events the school district provides for students, families and staff. Cimarron Elementary (CIM) had a special lesson planned for reading and writing students. Once a month, CIM reaches out to people willing to donate their time to teach a lesson on any subject of their choosing. Doctoral student from Rice University, Mark DeYoung, taught the students about different ways to approach certain writing styles. He used hip hop as his medium for the structure of poetry, teaching the students to beat box and used the beat to follow a rhythm pattern.
“You will need a lot of vocabulary and rhythms to make a successful piece.” stated Rodrigo Torres.
