Several years later when The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour was on tv They were holding their child, Chastity Bono and singing the song to her. It was so adorable.
Yes…and Cher was extremely uncomfortable with it…..but much later when Sonny unexpectedly died in a skiing accident, her eulogy was priceless…you could see that’ when all is said and done, she really loved and admired him!
Sonny and Cher were married here. He "discovered" her and encouraged her to sing in public because she was so shy. You can see her shyness here. They're very playful and flirty together here. We know that she overcame the shyness.
There would be no Cher if Sonny hadn't been there to guide her. She was terrified to sing alone. Sonny performed with her to help her with her fear. It was Magic!
Sonny and Cher also had a great hit with Baby Don't Go. They also appeared basically as themselves in the 1967 movie Good Times and went on to have a TV variety show.
Baby Don't GO was recorded and released before I Got You Babe. It totally flopped. But they re-released it after I Got you Babe, suddenly because of I Got You Babe, Baby Don;t Go is suddenly a hit.
Cher met and moved in with sonny when she was 16. He was much older. He loved her voice and took her to many producers to promote her. She was so shy though she refused to sing without sonny by her side even though he was not a singer. She was the voice, he wrote their songs and produced and sold them. They married, had a child, their own TV show, then divorced. Sonny had a string of successful restaurants, was mayor of Palm Springs and became a congressman. He died in a skiing accident in the 90s. We all know Cher was a sucessfull solo singer and actress winning an academy award for best actress for moonstruck. Try their hit "the beat goes on"
I grew up with Sonny & Cher's music & their TV show. Sonny wrote their hits in the 60's including "Baby Don't Go", "I Got You Babe", "The Beat Goes On" & "Little Man". He also wrote the song "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" which Cher recorded in 1966. Cher went on to have a big solo career.
Birth of a legend right there. And the man behind the legend. When this came out they were nobodies but that all changed after this record, even over here in the UK. The style, musically and visually, was absolutely of its time. 60s San Francisco. The perfect hippie couple. Ah, those were the days. Youth culture in full flight. And then the money men stuck their snouts in. Plastic imitation flowers and plastic imitation music everywhere, the very antithesis of hippie culture. But it was a good time to live through while it lasted, full of hope and optimism. I'm so glad I was young then. And it explains why I'm the bitter old fart I am now that I see where it's gone. Sorry, I mean "Peace and Love".
Sonny and Cher were big faves of mine back in the day. I bought many of their 45 roms, albums, and solo music by each of the (mostly Cher did solo work). Sonny wrote a lot of their songs. He learned a lot of his craft when he was working regularly for Phil Spector. He and Cher both sang background vocals on some of the records Phil produced for other artists before they formed their duo, which by the way, was first called Caesar and Cleo. I still have all of my Sonny and Cher records as well as the Cher records. You should react to their very sweet and romantic song, "Just You", if you can find it. It came out not long after "I Got You, Babe". I think Sonny also wrote that one.
Shawn and Mel, yours is the best react I've seen on this classic pop-rock song from the 1960's! Sonny put it together on his old piano in the garage and played it for Cher. When they got it all together in the studio, everybody present knew this upbeat yet sentimental beauty was a sure winner. More than five decades later it's never lost it's mass appeal.
As mentioned below, after they divorced they remained good friends. She spoke movingly at his funeral. What people forget is that later, among other things, was a Mayor and then a US Representative.
Sunny went on to become a us congressman for the Palm Springs area of California until he was on the ski slopes and try to move a tree and the tree didn't budge and he died I'm sure you'll be reacting to a lot of Cher songs she became a huge success
Loved your reactions! Sonny and Cher are legendary, and of course, Cher has been a legend in her own right for decades now. She's timeless! If you want to fall in love with this song at an even deeper level, enter the search string in UA-cam: "sonny cher got you babe letterman" (I don't think UA-cam allows us to include links in the comments). They performed this song on Letterman TWELVE YEARS after their divorce - with the same sense of pure joy and innocence and enthusiasm as when they were young starry-eyed newlyweds with their whole life in front of them. It was magical to watch and made me cry happy tears. I love your videos. Please keep them coming! ~K :)
Sonny wasn't really a great singer, but he wrote their great songs and was able to bring Cher out of her crushing shyness to become the iconic performer she is today. While they were together, they definitely had something special. Still, Cher on her own is still fire. :)
Classic, and their most iconic song. Sonny woke Cher up in the middle of night to show her this song right after he wrote it, and he told her he just knew it was going to be a hit. Yep, to say the least.
Sonny made Sunny and Cher......After divorce, Cher of course has had a fantastic career..Still working today...also won a Oscar. She is a talented Actor. Sonny became Mayor of Palm Springs, until hes untimely death due to skiing accident. Cher gave a wonderful speech at his funeral. I believe you could check out on UA-cam.... Watched Sunny and Cher show ever week, just out more videos from show, they had great guests...
I still have my Sonny and Cher barbie dolls. The Chere studio and a bunch of incredible outfits for Cher. Received them for Christmas along with a Farrah Fawcett doll. I used to watch the weekly TV show. Cher was always big on elaborate outfits to showcase her body.
I loved watching the Sonny and Cher tv show. They were so sweet together. It was a shame their marriage didn't last, but from what I understand, they stayed dear friends. Sonny was quite a bit older than Cher and I think when she grew up they kind of grew apart. Sonny later went into politics becoming the mayor of Palm Springs for several years. They got together in the 90's for a program and sang "I Got You Babe" together. They still had the smiles and sweetness for each other in their eyes as they sang. It was really beautiful after all those years.
I believe one of the things that made them so popular was that you could see the love between them!! I often wondered if her hit " If I Could turn back Time " was about her relationship with Sonny!!
Sonny wrote a sad, heart-wrenching song about divorce-“You Better Sit Down Kids” (ua-cam.com/video/i8fGs7MxBJA/v-deo.html), written from the father’s point of view-which Cher performed in '67. Of course that was several years before they actually divorced.
Now that you've heard this song, go watch "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray. :) This song plays a prominent part in the film. Another good song by them: "The Beat Goes On".
Funny you say that: today I was thinking I’ve been living through this pandemic like “Groundhog Day” staying away from other people; Hearing this song in my mind…. been a boring life.
They actually got a hit show called the Sonny and Cher show and had other singers and comedy sketches. Check it out. Sonny passed several years ago from a ski accident and Cher went on to a solid acting career
Sonny Bono is the only person to perform on a #1 hit and also serve in congress. He was elected to California's 44th district in 1994, and served there until his death in 1998.
Their first big hit SONNY wrote. They use to sing back up for Ronnie and the Ronettes on, Be My Baby. Sonny wasn't much of a singer but their TV show was hilarious. When they first started singing, they went by SONNY and Cleopatra.
two hit songs in 1965, "Baby Don't Go" and "I Got You Babe" made them famous. They were married for about a decade divorcing in 1975 but they still had times when they worked together even after they divorced. At the time of this video Cher was very shy and would not sing without Sonny. Obviously she got more and more confident as she gained experience. Cher went on to a highly successful career as a solo singer and actress, while Sonny Bono was eventually elected to Congress as a Republican U.S. Representative from California. In 1962 she was 16 years old when she met Sonny and they married two years later. Sonny was 11 years older than Cher. Bono died of injuries from hitting a tree while skiing at Heavenly Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe. He was 62 years old. They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
and he wasn't automatically disparaged for being GOP. times were more collegial, and members of both parties actually spoke to each other, as opposed to speaking past each other as they do now.
This is precisely where 50's rock and folk started to change. Along with "Sound of Silence", "California Dreaming" and "Hang on Sloopy", S&C's smash hit helped us all begin the transition to the Beatles and Stones, etc. Great reaction!
Hi Shawn and Mel from Down Under! I LOVE your channel! I think this should be your theme song for the two of you! You are such a beautiful couple Thank you for all the reactions that you do! Blessings and Peace to you and your family from Australia.
They were the powerhouse real life couple in 1965. A powerhouse couple from the same year (only in movies) was Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello. They did a bunch of beach themed movies where they were a couple but were just friends irl. They sang solo songs and duets in the movies but each had their own solo careers outside of the movies.
They had their own TV show back in the day, great songs together, had a daughter together, parted ways but believe they stayed friends. Sonny died in a skiing accident not long after being elected to Congress.
This famous song was a great example of the chart hits that exemplified the spirit of the sixties- Cher had a distinctive contralto voice that served her throughout a multi-decade career. Another married couple I believe you would enjoy. from an earlier genre, is Steve & Eydie -- Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme. They were married more than 50 years before Eydie passed in 2013. They were the main ingredient of the so-called Great American Songbook where singers would find their material. All this, despite the sad fact that George died in 1937 at the way-too-young age of 38. Steve & Eydie's 15-minute medley is the most entertaining introduction to Gershwin songs that you'll ever find. You should listen. You'll be so glad you did!!!

I used to have this on a 45 and I wore it out. I was crazy about their songs. I never saw Cher as completely crushed as she was at Sonny's funeral. They always had that love for each other even after their divorce.
When I was a kid growing up in LA, there used to be a local teenage TV show that was always on the beach. They’d have bands playing and teenagers dancing away in trunks and bikinis. The first time I ever saw Sonny and Cher was watching that TV show with them performing. I think it was from Malibu beach but I don’t know for sure.
Cher once said in an interview that Sonny woke her up in the middle of the night after writing this song and played it for her and she said "I hate it, I'm going back to bed", lol. Great reaction!! 🙂
Cher loved him till the end. They had been divorced for years. Cher tearfully gave his eulogy. He actually discovered her
Yes....I remember a blurb of her giving his eulogy.

Another Sonny and Cher song is The Beat Goes On. You need to check it out.
You really can see the love on Sonny's face, even in the last time they performed this, long after they were not together.
