Hi Seth. Thanks for posting this. You're right, of course... The depth of Joe's work is difficult to even describe. I highly recommend that everyone who loves photography buy Joe's "The Real Deal" book. It's extraordinary... :)
Absolutely brilliant and riveting viewing. One of Joe's comments about lighting reminded me of a story about David Bailey. He was being interviewed and was asked what light he preferred. He said: "Available light." The reporter tried to be clever and asked if he meant natural light. "No!" replied Bailey, "I mean any f*cking light!" More please.
One of the first times I came across the name Joe McNally was in American Photo in 1993. Joe (with a moustach) was testing the Nikon N90 by taking photos of his daughter's dance teacher dressed in a veil. Great shot. :-)
Joe saying Heisler has forgotten more about lighting than he will ever know scares me on how much I need to learn. Joe is one of the masters of light in my opinion.
This may seem a silly question but, are there any camcorders or prosumer video cameras that would be better than shooting with a mirrorless hybrid? Most dedicated video cameras don't seem to have the recording limits, rolling shutter, and other limitations of mirrorless.
Sure but that’s a different system entirely with its own trade offs. Like lens selection, stills ability if you want that, smaller sensors, etc. they are more of an all in for a specific use type option
Thanks for pulling this from the archives and editing it! Keep the good work~ And always nice to hear Joe talk, he's a real down to earth Grandmaster! Poor Fernando 🙂
Best ever, thank you was a blast. Cheers from Portugal.
