You gotta give it to him.

Just crazy to think of all those hours of film footage "rescued" by Peter Jackson, and how INCREDIBLY lucky we are to have this GOLDMINE of visual history of this seminal band in their prime available to us!!

Hearing Spade laughing to some of the stories he's already told like the Elvis meeting but hearing Spade laughing so organically and also adding in a little bit of the celebrity because they understand what it's like to be a bit in Paul's shoes, this is a wonderful wonderful show, it makes Paul's stories somehow more genuine and they come alive more and you can see how comfortable he is with them, they need to do this a lot more often, Spade and Carvey need to do this with everyone, they are really really good!!

Paul responded to your recognition of the collaborative process in action in the Get Back scenes and it really brought out his sincerity. Opening up about letting himself off the hook for the fabled breakup of the Beatles was astounding. Finally, remembering Farley and the iconic sketch that everyone who has subsequently interviewed Sir Paul knows they sound like in their head! Awesome. I was young when my father died. I instantly was comforted by the Beatles music by chance of a radio show the night of his funeral. The Beatles, especially Uncle Paul, practically, with help from mom, raised me. I went into the band at school, learned sax, trumpet, and such, then after school I grabbed a guitar, and a Beatles chord chart book, and now I have a few guitars and a Hofner bass hanging on my wall and play EVERYDAY. I listen to the Beatles EVERYDAY, it has now been 42 years that find myself all walrussy and BECAUSE of the lads, IN MY LIFE, ALL MY LOVING and my RUBBER SOUL has been a lane of pennies, and fields of strawberries. Too bad the influenced never had the same amount of talent as those 4. TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS, however, I douby anyone will ever be that in tune with the human element as those simple guys along the Mersey.

music is almost mathematical and should be symmetrical ( at least in the 50s-90s) So there were usually 4 lines to a verse, 3 or 4 lines for chorus, and 2 lines for a middle bit. A solo, and overdubs, harmonies come later Advertisers gave limits to song lengths, so 2=3.5 minutes was just the standard for songwriting. That structure was a great scaffold for Lennon and McCartney to build their early chops on. Later, when they became the medium, they pressed the limits over the money lords to stretch songs to 4, 5, 7 minutes long or more. Plus they expanded that scaffold, adding interesting twists and turns that would amaze the world.

I'm so happy to hear Paul actually talking about one of the things that I love the most about The Beatles, that none of their songs sounded the same, and that is especially true of the white album, which ties with 'The Golden Age of Wireless' by Thomas Dolby for my favorite album of all time. That's how I approach making my own albums, but this kind of variety seems to scare off most listeners. It's extremely impressive that the Beatles somehow managed to overcome that bias with the white album.

@@EmpyreanLightASMR actually that's a very common career trajectory with recording artists, I'm afraid. I've seen it countless times in my adult life as both a listener and lover of great music, and a composer and musician myself. His work became increasingly commercial, much less personal and emotionally connected, and uninspired and unimaginative. He used to conjure worlds and make you cry with his incredible command of synthesizer performance technique. His synthesizer work on 'Waiting for a Girl Like You' by Foreigner is legendary, and truly the stuff of gods and magic. After this he moved to California, shed his Englishness in favor of whatever the hell glitz and glam he thought he might find in Los Angeles, and made ring tones and gave TED Talks. It's hard to believe it's the same person.

Thanks Dana and David for this great Paul interview. I was 11 when The Lads played on Ed Sullivan Feb 9, 1964. I was hooked and the next day at school everybody was talking about The Beatles even the Teachers. I did meet Paul, George and Ringo in London 1973. John was in the states. I did not see The Beatles in concert but I did see them as solo Beatles. I did share this podcast to my Beatles group. beatlespeatlesfans1964. Thank you.

Wait, wtf? That’s the skill Dana has in negative qualities. If you were to name the person to demonstrate it worst, it’s Dana, but at least David tries. Dana says he sucks at that, then steamrolls over the guest and hijacks every single interview. Ironically, often with his very tired impersonation of Paul.

54:20 that's why I love the Anthology series, three double disc albums with alternate tracks or takes or just pure inspiration walking in before it's polished out and all of them would have been just as big of a hit as the master

    • @zackamania6534

The Anthology series gave the Beatles another 50 years of extreme relevancy and massive sales.
I was 17 when that series, and while a casual BEATLES fan and big McCartney fan (Hope and Deliverance had come out in 1993) but ANTHOLOGY took it to another level.
I got the Blue album and then went into the whole catalog by spring ‘96!
